There's suddenly a bit going on in SA. Preparation for a team in the future?

A video was posted on the Easts Tigers Facebook page announcing a new partnership with NRL SA.

Summary is:
- development pathway for SA players
- they're going to play a game in SA
- they want to expand Rugby League.

Good work Tigers! If I can find a non Facebook link I'll put it up.

On 3rd Nov I started a thread in NRL expansion titled:

Ridiculous that an area that once had successful rugby league team in the top flight of Australian Rugby League, are once again starting from zero.

Are any NRL clubs considering taking games to Adelaide? They should do. it's worked well in Perth.

It seems that teams that have, Sharks, Canterbury and a lesser extent, Storm haven't lasted the 3 or so years of the contract. Hopefully with a NRLSA set up things may be a little smoother

Problem is they get a avg crowd (usually around 8-9k) and give up on it after one year. It took WA about 5-6 years of exposure to go from 11k to sell outs. Someone needs to make a proper commitment, backed by the NRL, and get a real footprint in SA like Souths and Warriors have done in WA

The Rams averaged 15,330 fans in the 1997 Superleague season. The support was there. The longer we wait, the more the support will die out. Unfortunately, that dropped to around 7,500 for the 1998 season, on the back of 1, an incredibly poor season, the stupidity of the Superleague war, a change in stadia and the emergence of Port Adelaide in the AFL. Had we continued to support the Rams, the team would have a strong foothold in Adelaide by now. 20 years is a long time to build a club. Same story for the WA Reds. We did it in Melbourne, we would have been far more successful in Adelaide and Perth.

Can't argue with the previous post, things got pretty messed up with the peace deal and expansion suffered, fair dinkum a 24 team comp would have been a NRL Fan's heaven, the money was there at the time and if your team couldn't cut it well, goodbye and farewell..............

Spot on.

It certainly needs teams to be invested for the long haul.

Souths are no mugs in that regard - they know that to stand-out in the over-saturated Sydney market they need to reach out and get fans from across the country (and indeed overseas - there's a LOT of Souths fans here in NZ - I see people wearing their merch all the time).

Positive development for SA. Their grass roots has been pretty weak since the death of the rams so great to see a renewed focus on the game there. Lol re a nrl club in 5 years though!

In a state where Australian Rules football dominates public attention, the rugby clubs say the $5.5-million development at Penfield will support the grassroots development of their code.

Central Districts Rugby League club president Adam Levy said modern facilities would help attract more local families to the sport.

"Our committee over the last five years has been putting in the hard yards to support the community and now the community is supporting us back," he said.

The eight-hectare park in northern Adelaide will have three ovals suited to cricket, soccer and rugby. Work is expected to be completed during 2017.

About two decades on from the failure of Adelaide rugby league franchise The Rams, Mr Levy is hopeful SA will one day have another top-standard team.

"We're developing well. Hopefully we can get another NRL side back in within the next five years," he said.

NRL SA said more than 15,000 people were playing rugby league in South Australia, across junior and senior competitions, including touch, flag and tackle.

Next year, a regular season NRL match will be played at Adelaide Oval, with the Melbourne Storm taking on the Sydney Roosters.

The Central Districts Roosters are affiliated with the Sydney-based NRL franchise and plan to highlight the progress on their new facilities when the Sydney Roosters are in Adelaide next June.

"We're going to bring them out to the City of Playford area and show them what's happening out here," Mr Levy said.

"They've been a great fraternity to be part of … and they've been supporting [us] here very well, so let's hope they bring more games to Adelaide."

The executives of the club are discussing that option in more detail and said they would get back to us with the decision/plan.
Their logo is similar to the Adelaide 36ers. They should try to form some sort of alliance with the 36ers. Both clubs would benefit from it. Both sports would gain valuable publicity. The NBL commentators regularly talk about AFL, so it would be nice to have them mention our game for once.

Yeah there is some opportunity for collaboration there.

It's a shame that the Tigers mascot is taken by Wests unfortunately. I was always a supporter of Balmain moving to Adelaide to become the Adelaide Tigers.

Personally, I prefer big cat mascots, like Panthers, Tigers, Lions, etc. The team behind our SG Ball bid have discussed potential mascots for the club, like Adelaide Cheetahs, Leopards, Lions, Dingoes, Falcons, Pandas, Wombats, etc.

At the moment we're just woking with the name of our city, but we're using a stylised piping shrike.
