Thank christ for that. Good on the Auckland councillors and especially Dick Hubbard for showing some balls. "If you build it, they will come!"
Wonder if any future Kiwi league tests will be held there?

Mt. Smart is a way better venue for the league. Could never get the crowd for the new stadium.

I think that depends how the Warriors and kiwis go over the next year. If the Warriors have a good season and they start pulling 20+ to club games at the end of the season a big crowd for the Tri-Nations wouldn't be out of the question. Hower I agree that until we can expect 35K+ crowds Mt Smart should stay the venue.

If the Warriors get week two and three home finals i'd expect them to be held at the new stadium. Even if it wasn't a full house, enough bandwagon fans would jump on board to make it worthwhile getting a few more thousand at the new stadium.

But thats years off anyway.

But thats years off anyway. this year "bono"

i dont think much of mt smarts location. its a good enough stadium, just built in the wrong place.

the stadium should be in manukau to cater for the huge league lovin population there.

Ha. I meant that home finals/large stadium issue was years off!

Agree on Mt Smart's location, it's right in the middle of an industrial area which isn't that flash. It is however pretty handily located in being relatively close the the centre of he city and the motorway/transport links. That's North Harbour's only problem, it's right at the northern end of the city.

A redeveloped Eden Park will be the centrepiece of the 2011 Rugby World Cup.
Political Editor Barry Soper says Mr Mallard is disappointed his dream of a waterfront stadium in Auckland is in tatters. He said sadly the Auckland Regional Council and Auckland City Council's could not come to a unanimous decision.
The Government has now opted for the Eden Park option, although there is still some work to do. Agreement still needs to be reached on the redevelopment design, while there is also some funding issues to sort out.
Eden Park CEO John Alexander was rapt with news when told by our newsroom. He says he is delighted and excited - and will now look at the finer details of the decision.

The new Eden Park design actually looks pretty good, however the location is still crap. Hopefully some of the funding for the stdium ge=oes toward paying the whingeing neighbours to shut the f**k up.

Expensive real estate around there though.

LOook's like Carlaw Park's back in contention:

$400M Carlaw Park plan

A much better location than Eden Park, at a similar cost. Hopefully it would allow Eden Park to then be scaled back and used solely as a Cricket venue (I'm assuming Carlaw would be football only as it's reasonably tight space-wise)

Would be better than the Eden Park option. At least the traffic won't be a problem although parking could be.

No it's not, the Government hates the Eden Park option (which has a funding shoretfall anyway). They'll take any opportunity to avoid putting the funding into Eden Park, and rightly so.

I take back all of my comments on the Carlaw Park councillors.

I love you all. ANYTHING is better than Eden Park.
