I don’t understand what happened to the defence. Believe it or not but after 15 rounds in 2020 we were 13-2. The defence during that period was fantastic. It was almost a similar starting 13 as well apart from Jennings and Fergo instead of Penisini and Simonsson and Papali’i not being in squad with the back row consisting of Lane, Matterson and Brown. We were also favourites against Penrith during the first time we played them and we beat them. I feel like that period is a true reflection of what we should be aiming for instead of this top 6 aspiration bullshit. We’ve become so accustomed to mediocrity that we forget how good this team can be.

MJ was one of the best defensive centres I have ever seen.

Matterons defense on edge is far superior to Papali'i

N.Browns a good defender amd always set the line speed.

Well listening to BA's response about consistency last week it shows he doesn't have much of an answer he is happy to be in the 8.

Penisini is still learning. You have to remember this is first full season of first grade where backing up for the weekly grind can take a toll on young players at this part of the year.

He might be better off with a week or 2 in NSW cup just to refresh him and give him a mental break away from the weekly scrutiny of the nrl. Before the finals.

I've been told that Arthur gives his tick of approval if the opposition score as wide as possible, he prefers for the opposition to go up by 4s. He references it to a behind in the Afl To Arthur it's a win situation because we will eventually come out on top with 6s. He calls it the chessboard strategy. He even pays bonuses if they score within a meter of the corner post.. im mclovin it

From behind the posts watching tonight our D did look different. Our spacing was definitely better but that meant fewer in the tackle. Its different but against a team more prepared to get the ball away it could backfire. The issue remained however that our wingers rush in even when its man on man. Crazy stuff really. Nice to see a change tonight but it might take a while.
What happened to the defensive style against the panfers. It was awesome.

We do alot of one outs giving effort and power and energy but against 3 defenders say 300kg vs 100kg you will usually lose out.

I get it to start like that, compress the opposition defense then introduce offloads which then causes the compressed defense trouble. But we arent even offloading.

I digress.

We need to put together:

a) the defensive style we use against panfers
b) Introduce offloads 30 mins into the game.

It all goes down to the balance.

We give alot of energy with our power game in attack so it makes our defense less agressive. Not using a full compliment of the bench also contributes to this. It is ying and yang.

The panfers use the back 5 to maintain their aggressive defense. Their balance is much better obviously.
We use the same pack to power it out as well as to try and be agressive in defense yet without the full use of the bench. Our rucking out from the back 5 is way below par since Fergo left. Guth isn't bad. Waqa not bad too but not enough.

I'd rather BA have the bench who comes in and rips in then comes off and then comes on again and rips in again. Actually, NRown can be used this way

And yes, Simonnsen's coming in when there was no need to was stupid.
