You play to your strengths in the squad. Having Guth at fullback, who is probably the best ball playing fullback, allows our halves to take on the line a bit more, which is a good thing cause Moses and that "overrated little twerp. Destined to become the next Daniel Mortimer" have pretty good running games and are both fast themselves, probably the fastest in the competition.

I know Gutho isnt the fastest fullback, but is he really that slow?

Was there actually that many occasions this year where a lack of speed cost us? Only one I can think of is against the young sharks centre.

And from memory he participated in / finished quite a few long distance tries / line breaks - so he seems to have the speed to “back up”.
I think his superior anticipation makes up for lack of speed off the mark. Look at some of the support runs he makes - he's at top speed and ten metres in front of the outside back making the break, and positioned perfectly by the time the ball carrier gets to the fullback. He's a very smart player.

Maybe I was/am harsh on Guth. But I just don’t get how anyone could have that piece of shit as an agent. Surely each player looks into the background of the person representing them.

I'm sure they do. They look at what salary they get their principals. That's about it.

Watching the replay of our Final against the Broncos, in the second half, Gutho made a break, and made a beeline towards the corner.

However, he soon realised he didn't quite have enough speed to burn Boyd, and so he slowed down, drew in Boyd, and threw a pass to his support player (DylBro, I think), who scored untouched.

That showed me that, despite his lack of elite-level speed, he is a very smart player, and we have surrounded him with teammates who do have enough elite-level speed to compensate for his shortcoming.

Tell you what, though - Gutherson's enthusiasm, fitness, playmaking skills, and footy brain make him one hell of a player.

Hypothetically, who do you move from centre:

- Waqa Blake, who is big, fast, strong, and a great defender at centre?

- Michael Jennings, who is fast enough, a great defender, and has won Tests, a Premiership, and Origins at centre?

I used to think that Gutho was best suited to centre, but I think his 2019 season put those fears to bed.

Blake will miss a fair portion of the season with injury; and Jennings is in the twilight of his career.

I hate to tell you but if speed is the only thing you require from him, he won’t continue to develop that. He’s as fast as he’ll ever be.
You don’t see a guy who played all his lower level footy at fullback and now the vast majority of his NRL career at fullback as a specialist fullback? He “can” play centre, doesn’t mean he should.

Lol limited ball playing skills. He is quite possibly the best passer amongst current NRL fullbacks. If he had the speed you’re complaining he doesn’t have, he’d be the best fullback in game at the moment

We'll just have to agree to disagree, then. And, like I said, he may well improve further this year in the fullback role. A lot of very good centres and wingers played fullback in the lower grades and juniors. Fullback in the NRL is a different kettle of fish. Anyway, right now he is our best fullback option.

He does get a few line breaks, but I think he demands the ball a bit too much when the defence is on the back foot, when it should be Moses or Drown running at the retreating defensive line.

Or: he demands the ball just the right amount, but if he was faster he could capitalise on it more betterer.

f**k GUTH, i don’t care how good a player he is I don’t like his Smarmy MANAGER!!!!

My biggest problem with Guth at time’s he can be a bit of a hog but he’s easily one of the best fullbacks in the comp. Not elite but in the next tier down, but you add in his leadership skills and what he can bring a team and he’s good enough for us.

So, do you think Gutherson is ok as a part-time centre?

If so, then who becomes our part-time fullback?

I reckon he’d be about three quarters of the comp’s best fullback option

What the.?!?.? Centre needs a mix if speed and power that you’ve already said he doesn’t possess. Whereas fullback requires a breadth of skills such as fitness, positioning, communication, awareness and ball playing. All things Gutho has

Centre needs power, anticipation and good defence. Doesn't necessarily require a lot of speed; Gutho has enough for centre. Takairangi hasn't got a whole lot of speed, but has strength, and is a terrific attacking centre when he doesn't have his brain explosions. Gutherson, I think, could be like that - but with better defence and far more level-headed play than Takairangi. Let's just agree to disagree, okay?
