Rheed is excellent in the media.
Yep, you're right he is. He too then should be thinking of doing some work as a lower grade commentator to get experience and comfortable giving his opinions on TV.
I find that commentating on games is a very good way to get these players used to making their views and thoughts clear and coherent within a few sentences without all the normal um's and ah's that so many players say while trying to gather their thoughts. It slowly allows them to get the confidence to judge and assess other players critically and professionally without feeling self conscious or like they are just bagging a fellow player.
It also gives them a stronger voice within the game and they then can be seen as complete professionals within our club and the game for other players to aspire to. Imagine having the next Gallen, Ennis or Cronk, media personality spruiking and defending our club during games or analytical discussions? What a breath of fresh air that would be.
In fact here's a thought, Why doesn't our club film every NSW Cup game or other lower grade games where applicable with an in house commentary team and upload it onto our Clubs website each week? By that I mean, get a professional guy to be the main commentator, but then when possible get our NRL players(or even other lower grade players) to be the side kick commentators and the sideline guy. Two or three players can be chosen each week to fill these roles on a rotating basis and that way many can get the feel and experience of doing it without the pressure of real TV. That way they can see who likes doing it and is suited to it as a future career.
From there whoever has the aptitude and gift of the gab can then progress into the media like Radio or Television proper. At the very least it would give our players exposure to being on the air so to speak and how to conduct themselves much better either behind or in front of the camera.
This wouldn't cost all that much to set up at all. Mounting a camera on a large tripod and then hiring a no name main commentator(might even do it for free, to get experience himself) would be very cheap to do. So I can't see price being an issue. When our COE is complete we may have even more resources to really add to this concept. Who knows?
Anyway just a thought. Can't hurt the development of our players in regards to media and professionalism. Who knows we may even unearth the next Rex Mossop or Frank Hyde. You never know, once you start testing these blokes out, what might happen.
