We all know that Bennett’s teams perform quite well while he’s there, though it’s no guarantee of a premiership or even a grand final appearance. But are merkins aware that Bennett’s recent teams all performed better in the three years before he arrived than the three years after he left?

In the three years before and after Bennett, his teams made the finals the following number of times:

Dragons: 2/3 before, 0/3 after
Knights: 2/3 before, 0/3 after
Broncos: 2/3 before, 1/3 after
Bunnies: 1/3 before, 0/1 after and not looking good for year two

Does any merkin think these numbers are explained by coincidence?
Is that correct? Didn't Souths make the prelim the year after he left (2022)?

Yep played Penrith the night after we beat the Cows.

They were up 12-0 with to 5 to go before halftime and threw an intercept which changed the game then imploded.

Not sure if we beat Souths either if they made the GF they were our bogey side at the time who we looked clueless against.

Would’ve depended on if Loltrell shook Junior like a doll enough to wake him up

He leaves and the side falls apart due to a coach not as good

Oh shit. I thought he rolled straight into the Dolphins last year. So they are 1/2 and not looking good for year three, rather than 0/1 and not looking good for year two.

I think he would look at the quality of the roster, and ask interested clubs how much room they have in the cap in each of the years they want him to coach.
So by this I mean he can see the quality of players on the books for each of the years he is being asked to coach at a new club. But if they have ten empty slots (for example) in their roster for the second year he would be coach, it’s a very different story if they only have $2M to spend compared to if they have $6M free in the cap. It means he can recruit a very different ten players for that second year.

Bennett also poured water on a potential move to the Eels, with coach Brad Arthur in the midst of a battle to save his job.

“Not even nearly (have I considered it). I haven’t even walked past the ground,” he said.

“I have got a fair idea about what I have done in my life. You need to go and read another book and see what that one says because Wayne Bennett has never been near the Eels in his coaching career.

“I loved Jack Gibson and Ron Massey (former Eels coaches). They were big influences on my life and my coaching life but that doesn’t mean that is going to get me to the Eels.”

Don’t think he’s keen haha

Since when has Bennett told the truth at press conferences.

He is as cunning as a rat snake.

He has coached at commbank before so that's already a lie about never walking past our ground.

The fact he mentioned Massey and Gibson i reckon is a deliberate subtle hint he actually wants to come here.

He is not going to beg for the job the board are going to have to do some work and give him a deal that suits him though.

Bennett knows how to play the game.

I just wonder if our board are ballsy enough to make the move.

I have zero belief that Bennett is in the mix for a future Eels opportunity.

Why would he want to uproot and live down here at his (retirement) age, to take on the massive task that would be ahead of anyone coming in to try and get us to the next level? He can likely happily rest on his achievements, without sullying his reputation on us at the very end.
