Eels Salary Cap MK III

Gee I'm getting annoyed with the media / commentators suggesting it isn't fair that to get us back under the cap all we may need to do us have Watmough retire especially as he has played this year. f**k it aren't our fault he injured himself !!!

Well, it's not exactly clear. You don't automatically get cap exemptions because players get long-term injuries. Nobody is saying that it is the Eels fault that the guy got injured. They're saying that we knowingly spent more than we were allowed to on players (at least in prior seasons) and that the fact that a player cops a career-ending injury doesn't change the reality of our (alleged) behaviour. From that perspective, I agree with them.

On the other hand, it seems possible that the only reason we are over the cap in 2016 is the NRL's decision to include 2014/15 TPAs in the 2016 expenditure.....if that is true then it's almost of a case of two wrongs making a 'right'......though that isn't a great way to run a competition either.

Thanks for the update, Avenger.

It's pretty incredible how quickly things change in this sport - I recall several years ago, I was told by an impeccable source we were going to get an ex-Eel back.

It didn't happen because one small cog fell off and screwed everything up.

Everything can be one way one day, and another day the next. It's crazy.

But we appreciate the info, buddy.

Eels 101 into 67 on sportsbet, is there a conspiracy here hindy111? Maybe they have read avenger's mail. Possibly just eels fans with more money than sense. Although if somehow we get our penalty reduced sportsbet won't be happy

So the club knew all along he was retiring?

And with the 3 months, is that due to neglect or waiting period? 3/6 months are common waiting periods of its relating to income protection

Can someone just confirm my post whether the club knew in feb he was retiring?

I would say we are as much chance after 9 rounds of winning the competition this year, as we have been at any time after Round 9 since 2011. I doubt we've been $67 in any of those years after 9 rounds though.

you also have those same third party systems in place your board just doesn't know how to use them.
Fact you have one of the biggest junior bases there is.
Fact you have one of the biggest fan bases there is. I can not believe among that fan base there are not many very successful business people who could offer these deals to the club if approached
Parramatta is one of the biggest growing business districts in the country. Get rid of your current board and get people in who can use this advantage that is sitting there

Businesses don't want to be associated with a sporting team controlled by the members of a gambling/drinking club. The problem is our ownership structure. That's what continues to encourage our political problems.

Just voting for someone else misses the point entirely.

I would say we are more of a chance then most if not all of those years to be honest. We may have been on more than 0 points in those years (assuming we have lost all our points) but would not have had a team capable of winning enough games to qualify. Which is why our odds are better than they would have been as punters have realised at odds of 101 we are a slight chance which is not normally the case at those odds so they have had a few $ on us dropping our price. I think Joel Caine said every 2nd bet is for the eels atm

Yeah not only is it us fans fault it's gambling and alcohol's fault as well.

Jimmy smith said on mmm he spoke to someone from the insurance company and was told that watmough had filed in the paperwork back in February and its been sitting there for 3 months.

Because he won't want to retire until he gets paid. We don't want to pay him to retire while there's a chance insurance will cover it, so until that is settled we may as well keep him on the books (since we believed we were under the cap and we were paying him anyway). The NRL's determination to not include him under the cap is irrelevant with regard to the insurance payout. They are two separate issues.

However now that he is stopping us from becoming compliant we are fast tracking the retirement with the NRL, rather than continuing to wait for his insurance payout. Where before there was no reason to rush his retirement, now there is a very good reason. And so his retirement is made official.

Watmough will get paid regardless. If insurance pays then the club is off the hook. If it doesn't then we pay him as we would have anyway. Either way (insurance or not) it's up to the NRL whether it's included under the cap (and they have standing rules on this).

Nobody probably knew if he was going retire at the time it occurred in February. There was probably always hope, as injuries take a while to determine the seriousness off especially career ending ones.

PARRAMATTA’S ‘Gang of Five’ officials should be shown respect and given the chance to defend the allegations made against them, says Eels skipper Tim Mannah.

“These guys are human as well, they deserve a bit of respect and to be given the benefit of doubt until the findings are handed down,” Mannah said.

“It is easy for you or I to point the finger and say what we think is going wrong but unless we have all the details and know exactly what happened there is no real point in us commentating (further).

“When you are in their position it is a lot harder because they obviously know a lot more than we do.”
