Eels seeking permission to cheat salary cap...

If Parra signs Folau at $400K a season and has to operate $400K under the salary cap the year after next, that means they'd have to dump around $800K of talent just to be under the cap in the 2014 season.

Who would be on the chopping block?

Would be even more than 800k as those guys who get chopped would still have to be replaced by minimum contracted players.

Anyone considered this is all a beat-up so that when Folau does eventually sign it makes the Eels board look good? Just a thought. I don't buy half of the stuff that's come out.

Stacks of our top 25 are off contract for 2014.

Players we could jettison then that come to mind would be Willie Tonga (on at least $250K you'd expect), Ben Roberts (I guess he'd be on $200K), Ben Smith (probably $250K), and maybe even Fuifui for 250K (total $950,000)? All of these players are in positions that would be replaceable by members of our current broader squad if they kick on this year.

Is Izzy worth it, and should we (and hence nay clubs) be allowed to shift the cap like that to make a signing? I don't know.

Yeah that just looks like the DT trying to milk this story for all it's worth. I bet there'll be another article in a few days about him going back to the Storm.

probably. only quote came from Richardson saying he can't comment on their cap situation so DT takes it as 'it could be a yes and it could be a no'

tbh Souths would be silly to jump at him YET. He seems keen to be at Eels and we are trying to get him there, if it falls through completely then go for it but not many clubs will be able to lure him at this stage as his mind seems made up...but he did ;eave to go to AFL so that can be argued too.

He will end up at Eels and we will have to shed players to get him and i'm ok with that because he is a great player when at his peak and he is still young

I think Parra and Izzy are owed an explanation from Schubert as to why he has been valued at such a high price. Also would like to see some precedents of other times he has valued players,

Wasn't he on something like $500K a year at the Broncos?

The rule should be that when assholes like f**kau want to come crawling back to the NRL the club should have to pay at least 80% of the salary the player was on before they turned their back on the game.

not sure what he was on. Problem is with that is yeh sure they turned their back on the game but like Folau he isn't in the condition where he could be at his best so for a year or so while he is getting back to his best he is soaking up say 200k of the salary another bloke could be getting.

I don't like that he turned his back on the game us much as you but he is still young and left a multi million dollar contract to come back to the game and play for a team in the Western Sydney heartland where we need help with Parra and Penrith struggling of late and not to mention a for a much reduced salary than the one he left and the one he is 'valued' at. He would be a great counter marketing tool against AFL.

I hope Schubert holds the same stance if Cooper wants to come to NRL for Roosters....he is a top union player and while hasn't played NRL could command a big money contract. If he goes to Roosters for a small contract a lot of fans will be livid.

Also i read an article that new Melbourne Storm ceo is saying the salary cap will become laughable if we are allowed to cheat it...lol rich coming from a bloke who while wasn't there when it happened is ceo of a club that was part of the biggest rort in NRL history!

I'd like to see how a player like who is in Izzys position is valued

Does this also mean, that if a team were looking at paying a player MORE then what Schubert thinks they're worth, they would demand that the team offer a smaller contract?
