Sounds like it could be it - nothing official from the club yet.

Bulldogs to retire Jersey 18
The Mitsubishi Electric Bulldogs announced today the retirement of the number 18 jersey. This jersey will no longer be worn by any Bulldogs player in any grade of football.

Explaining the retirement Bulldogs captain Andrew Ryan said, “Every week we have 17 players named in the first grade side, but when we play at home it feels like we have an extra player with us – an 18th player. That player is our fans. The support and lift we get from our supporters is like having an extra man ready to help us out.”

This Sunday before the Bulldogs v Titans clash the Club will formally retire the number 18 jersey and give it to its supporters as recognition of their contribution to this Club and to the many Bulldogs and Berries teams over the years.

A giant 18 jersey will be displayed at all Bulldogs home games at Telstra Stadium as a permanent reminder to everyone of the contribution of Bulldogs fans.

Bulldogs CEO Malcolm Noad commented, “The 18 jersey retirement coincides with our Legends Week festivities and the announcement of the Bulldogs Ring of Champions.

“This will be a special day in the history of this club, I strongly urge all Bulldogs supporters to be at Telstra Stadium by 1pm so as to not miss out on seeing the 200-plus former Berries and Bulldogs players and the inaugural induction of Club greats into the Ring of Champions. And then cheer the team on when they take on the Gold Coast Titans.”

Weak as.

Queensland didn't retire the number six.
Brisbane didn't retire the number seven, and nor will Newcastle.
The Roosters didn't retire number thirteen, or the Tigers number nine.

Lame, cheap, phony, gimmicky tradition. Credit to Andrew Ryan for being able to read several sentences together, though.

Wearing the #14. Shane Rigon is named in it this weekend for Soufs.

No Bulldogs is ever permitted to wear #18 on field again. That's the point.

pftt is that all.

I remember years ago 18 used to be the winger in Reserve Grade. Ahh the good old reserve grade days, and the bench players were number 42, or 45.:D

That was when SL brought those ridiculous chose your own number style.

I think with Soccer, you can have any number you want. I remember a couple of years a club stopped using I think number 25, cause the player using that number died.

I wasn't saying they're still doing it, but when they were, all the jibberers had # 14 on their supporters jerseys.
I don't know who was running the club at the time, but I remeber that Don Lane used to have 14 on his jacket.
I was merely pointing out that this is not some new, fantastic innovation by the Dogs.;-)

I was a bad boy one week when I was with Newtown and had to sit on the bench with #47 on my back.

Shouldn't matter whether it's new or old. They're giving some different ideas a shot.
