If 3-Test Ashes series are no longer to played, then perhaps a system where to win the Ashes trophy the non-holder (currently England) has to defeat the current holder (Aust) in 3 consecutive Tests (including World Cup games), no matter how far apart the 3 matches are.

Interesting idea.

The only fallback is it might take two years to win the Ashes. Which is a bit to long to wait.

Make it apart of the Four Nations where the winner of Australia and England take the Ashes. The Ashes has to much history to just shelve the whole concept all together.

Hopefully Peacock's comments lead to some debate between Aust & England as to what the future of the RL Ashes is.

Are 3-Test series dead?

If we aren't to have any more 3 Test tours (and the Lions haven't been here since 1992), and there's no current plan for Aust to mount a 3-Test tour to England, then the RL Ashes are either dead and consigned to history, or some new system has to be brought into vogue.

I don't think test series are dead, I just think we have to wait till we get some administrators with a clue. So wait yes, they are probably dead after all.

sadly 3 test series are going to be a very, very rare...as it stand theres only one chance for england, australia & NZ to have a 3 test series, thats in 2012...then after that it'll be 2016,2020 while everyone else is trying to qualify for the RLWC...hence why it has to be england that tours and not GB....GB is dead..

2009 - NH4 nations - european cup - pacific cup
2010 - SH4 nations - european cup - pacific cup
2011 - NH4 nations - european cup - pacific cup
2012 - RLWCQ - ENGLAND ashes tour?
2013 - RLWC
2014 - SH4 nations - european cup - pacific cup
2015 - NH4 nations - european cup - pacific cup
2016 - RLWCQ - england tour NZ
2017 - RLWC down under
2018 - NH4 nations
2019 - SH4 nations
2020 - RLWCQ - australia tour england?

and so on.......

things are much different these days. back in the old days, tours were only once every four years and were a big deal, and ya played all the club sides, etc.

in addition, these days, i'd go as far to say that the average aussie rugby league fan has got basically no respect whatsoever for the pommy competition or the pommy game in general.

It does not have to be like that spud, I showed earlier how you can have good tours with the other international tournaments.

I think your exactly right, which is why I have been pushing to have more Super League vs NRL clubs. The more established Super League clubs like Saints, Leeds, Bradford, Hull FC, Wigan and Warrington are generally strong and have been for along time. Saints, Leeds, Wigan and Warrington could easily knock off any NRL club tomorrow if they played.

If our best clubs were constantly beaten by SL clubs, Australia might see England as competition rather then whipping boys.

This year British sport has demonstrated that there is a place for the traditional tour. In Rugby Union, the British and Irish Lions conducted a 6 week, 10 match tour of South Africa (including a 3 test series). After Woodward's 2005 tour to NZ) restored player, coach and supporters' pride in the concept. The England and Wales cricket team (effectively a Great Britain team under the auspices of the England and Wales Cricket Board) just won a tense series against Australia.

There is a place for a Lions series every four years, midway between RLWCs, Run the tour in October to November, after the Grand Finals. Just as RU rotates Lions tours of Australia, NZ and South Africa, RLIF could rotate the following tours:
Lions tour of Australia (e.g. 3 tests vs Kangaroos, 1 game vs Indigenous Dreamtime team, 6 games against NRL clubs).
Lions tour of NZ/Pacific (e.g. 3 tests vs Kiwis, 1 game against Maori, 1 vs Warriors, perhaps a few games against NZ provinces or PI nations)
Kangaroo tour of UK (e.g. 3 test series vs Lions in Northern England, London and Cardiff, 7 games against English clubs).

There would definitely be a demand for games. English clubs already stage offseason friendlies (e.g. Boxing Day and New Years Day) to big crowds. They'd compete fiercely for the honour to host a touring Kangaroo team. Likewise, no NRL club will turn down the opportunity to host a touring GB team, given the potential financial windfall.

Griff, in the past I've debated you against the concept of a tour, so I'll give you credit for steadfast support of the tour concept, but it would be important to keep it rare enough to remain special, rather than staging a tour every single year. I agree that the 3/4N concept is not inherently better than a tour format.

IMO the 3/4N should only be the launchpad for expanded into an IRB system of regional tournaments and of home and away test tours (like their 3/6N, June and November windows, except all held between September to November).

You mean a REAL link between an NRL and an ESL team that actually has some substance unlike all the other "links" we've heard about in the past?

Any evidence for any of this? In any event
1) If the Republic of Ireland RL want nothing to do with Lions, OK, but they had nothing to do with the Lions until 1999 anyway. It'd be a big change of attitude from any other sport, especially RU Lions, whose last two captains have been from Leinster (Brian O'Driscoll) and Munster (Paul O'Connell).

I would find it extremely surprising that members of the Northern Ireland League would want nothing to do with GB, the team that represents their country.

2) Ignoring the fact that England's last performance in an international tournament was awful, whereas Scotland and Ireland performed with some credit, GBRL has been dominated by English RL players for decades anyway. The relevant point that it doesn't matter where the players come from within the UK. as long as they are eligible for GB.

3) There is comparatively less tradition, commercial value, or wider national interest across England and the UK in England. The public has consistently placed greater value in the GB brand.

There is place for both England and GB in the RL calendar.

Observer and druzik I think we are all virtually on the same page. We need an integrated system of regional tournaments and and home and away tours.

Each tour would only be every 4 years, so they would be rare enough to remain special. This is one of the key benefits over an annual 4 nations model. I think GB should play Australia every 2 years in a reciprocal tour arrangement, just like in cricket and just like we used to do prior to the SL war.

2013 - World Cup (England/Wales/Scotland/Ireland competing separately)
2014 - Lions Tour (alternating between a series v NZ and a series v Australia)
2015 - Kiwi Tour (incorporating a test against France and a match against Wales)
2016 - Kangaroo Tour (incorporating a test against France and a match against Wales)

rinse. repeat.

During the Kiwi Tour year, this leaves Australia the chance to play matches against the Pacific Nations and/or PNG. Similarly for NZ during the Kangaroo Tour year. GB should play an away test in France as a warmup for the test series when they host a tour, and a home test v France in years that they conduct a tour.

Other people will have slight different preferences for models, but the key thing is that all this is an integrated system where test playing nations are in regular contact, but without playing the same tournament year after year.

On the GB v England issue, I've made my views known about that in the past. A key point is as The Observer points out, the public has consistently placed greater value in the GB brand. This will only get much much stronger with Great Britain competing in the 2012 Olympics. Also as I've pointed out, England competing in major tournaments provides a huge incentive for players eligible for the other home nations to play for England instead. Thus it actually weakens the other home nations rather than making them stronger.

I hope people wake up to this soon.

Surely that would depend on which half of Northern Ireland you asked?
