Expected crowds for the tournament

Just had a look at Thormand Park for the Australia/Ireland game.

Looks grim. Right on halfway on the "western stand" (or whatever they call the side facing the camera in Ireland) is sold out. Otherwise, high availability all along that side of the ground. Rest of the ground doesn't appear to have been opened up for tickets.

Here's what the ground looks like with League on it, if you want a feel. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sRMJLIw1WdU

Unlike the France v Ireland game, at least they are selling into the side of the ground that will be on TV.

As it currently stands, 3,125 of the 6,925 available seats (45%) of the available seats have been sold. In addition there has already been a number of sales in the GA Terrace section, with Eastern Terrace North changing shades of blue due to at least 30% of sales in that bay.

Sure it would be great if it was better sales, but the match is still well on track for the largest Ireland international RL crowd of all times.

A better showing by Ireland against Fiji may have drummed up some interest.

Surely if Bristol can draw 7,000 plus to their match of two minnows Limerick can pull a similar crowd? I wonder what the local marketing and PR has been like there? By all accounts the work done by the local council and the Sonics deserves praise.

Hopefully a charm offensive by both nations in the week leading up to the match is a must. When do the Wolfhounds and Kangaroos arriving in town?

Well when you compare it to 2000, where matches were played in English cities which RL barely gets a mention and poor promotion, the organisers in this tournament should take a bow.

And Bristol, which isnt well know for League, got a pretty decent crowd. Infact I heard the mayor of that city was so excited to see the World Cup match there.

Given the hype of the World Cup and the quality of the games, I can expect more people turning up the games.

Just looked the venue up. It's got a capacity of over 26,000!!

What were they thinking? This seems to be the only venue the organisers have got wrong but I can't see how 5,000 in a stadium that size will look good, even if they are all facing the camera.

Australia v Ireland would have been better suited to somewhere like craven cottage in London. Lots of Aussies and Irish there to market to

Musgrave Park in Cork would have been a good venue. Especially considering Cork is a bigger city than Limerick. Failing that the RDS Arena in Dublin seats 18,000. In saying that, Limerick did put in a bid for the game so fair ply to them.

Limerick must have bid more for this game than any other Irish city/town. I assume they have to guarantee the WC organisers a certain amount of money that the Limerick council expect to recoup in tourist spending.

Why the hell would you count Wales - Italy as having no crowd? People paid for a ticket for the day which was more expensive on account of their was 2 games, and loads stuck around to watch the game.

Other sports would count is 90,000. Trust league fans to not

Musgrave Park is a dump.

Cork is a bigger city but it is a more competitive sports market. Rugby Union might be the third or forth most popular sport there where as it is the most popular in Limerick.

Dublin yes would have been a better choice. Only issue is that the RDS is located right beside the Aviva Stadium which will have games on.

No no no. 45k entered and left once, the two fixtures count as one for attendance, union is one such sport that kids itself by double counting its Wembley double header in the past
