Sound of Music

“- Captain von Trapp: Berlin. They've offered me a commission. I've been requested to accept immediately and report to their naval base at Bremerhaven tomorrow.
- Maria: I knew this would happen. I didn't think it would be so soon.
- Captain von Trapp: To refuse them would be fatal for all of us. And joining them would be unthinkable.”

CHRISTOPHER PLUMMER - Captain von Trapp
JULIE ANDREWS - Maria

And that's the hardest part. Today, everything is different. There's no action. I have to wait around like everyone else. Can't even get decent food. Right after I got here, I ordered some spaghetti with marinara sauce and I got egg noodles and ketchup. I'm an average nobody. I get to live the rest of my life like a schnook.

Forget about it" is, like, if you agree with someone, you know, like "Raquel Welch is one great piece of ass. Forget about it!" But then, if you disagree, like "A Lincoln is better than a Cadillac? Forget about it!" You know? But then, it's also like if something's the greatest thing in the world, like, "Minghia! Those peppers! Forget about it!" But it's also like saying "Go to hell!" too. Like, you know, like "Hey Paulie, you got a one-inch pecker?" and Paulie says "Forget about it!" Sometimes it just means "Forget about it."

My favourite movie of all time is The Gods Must be Crazy. I watch it on average every year. And this quote sums it up for me - and a lot about life in general...

"Civilized man refused to adapt himself to his environment. Instead he adapted his environment to suit him"

It's part of a longer narration piece at the beginning of the film, comparing the simple, contented life of the Bushmen of the Kalahari with that of the complex world of "Civilised man".... This puts the movie (and a lot about life in general for mine) into context...

"Humans avoid the Kalahari like the plague because man must have water. So the beautiful landscapes are devoid of people. Except for the little people of the Kalahari. Pretty, dainty, small and graceful, the Bushmen. Where any other person would die of thirst in a few days they live quite contentedly in this desert"

"They must be the most contented people in the world. They have no crime, no punishment, no violence, no laws no police, judges, rulers or bosses. They believe that the gods put only good and useful things on the earth for them."

"In the deep Kalahari, there are Bushmen who have not heard of civilized man.........."

"Only 600 miles to the south, there's a vast city. And here you find "civilized man". "Civilized man" refused to adapt himself to his environment. Instead he adapted his environment to suit him. So he built cities, roads, vehicles, machinery. And he put up power lines to run his labour-saving devices. But he didn't know when to stop. The more he improved his surroundings to make life easier the more complicated he made it. Now his children are sentenced to 10 to 15 years of school, to learn how to survive in this complex and hazardous habitat. And civilized man, who refused to adapt to his surroundings now finds he has to adapt and re-adapt every hour of the day to his self-created environment.

"For instance, if it's Monday and 7:30 comes up, you have to disadapt from your domestic surroundings and re-adapt yourself to an entirely different environment. 8:00 means everybody has to look busy. 10:30 means you can stop looking busy for 15 minutes. And then, you have to look busy again. Your day is chopped into pieces. In each segment of time you adapt to new circumstances."

"In the Kalahari, it's always Tuesday, or Thursday if you like. Or Sunday. No clocks or calendars tell you to do this or that...."

>>>

The Bushman could not be more happy and contented - completely separate and oblivious to the outside world, until they happen upon a coke bottle. It goes from there...

Some Chevy Chase wordplay from Fletch (1985)

Dr. Joseph Dolan: "Right. Now, how long have you had these pains, Mr. Barber?"
Fletch: "No, that's "Babar"."
Dr. Joseph Dolan: "Two B's?"
Fletch:"One B. B-A-B-A-R."
Dr. Joseph Dolan: "That's two."
Fletch: "Yeah, but not right next to each other. I thought that's what you meant."
Dr. Joseph Dolan: "Arnold Babar. Isn't there a children's book about an elephant named Babar?"
Fletch: I don't know. "I don't have any."
Dr. Joseph Dolan: "No children?"
Fletch: "No elephant books."

Chick Hearn: [During Fletch's dream] "He is actually six-five, with the afro, six-nine."

Fletch: "Can I borrow your towel for a sec? My car just hit a water buffalo."

[Fletch is being interrogated by Chief Karlin and is giving him attitude]
Chief Karlin: "So, what's your name?"
Fletch: "Fletch."
Chief Karlin: "Full name?"
Fletch: "Fletch F. Fletch."
Chief Karlin: "I see, And what do you do for a living, Mr. Fletch?"
Fletch: "I'm a shepherd."
Chief Karlin: [to the arresting officers] "Officers, could you excuse us for a few moments?"
Fletch: "Yeah, why don't you guys go down to the gym and pump each other."
Chief Karlin: "Why are you doing this, Mr. Fletch?"
Fletch: "I like men. I like to be manhandled. I like you."

Fletch: (singing)"Strangers in the night, exchanging clothing, strangers in my pants..."

Records Nurse: "Oh, Doctor, are you all right?"
Fletch: "Where am I?"
Records Nurse: "You're in the records room."
Fletch: "The records room? Oh, then I'm fine."
Records Nurse: "Can I get you something?"
Fletch: "Yeah, do you have the Beatles' White Album? Never mind, just get me a glass of hot fat. And bring me the head of Alfredo Garcia while you're out there."

Alan Stanwyk: "You'll be wearing rubber gloves. Do you own rubber gloves?"
Fletch: "I rent 'em. I have a lease with an option to buy."

Fat Sam: "I got some reds."
Fletch: "You don't mean communists, do you, Sam?"

Fletch: "I'm afraid I'm gonna have to pull rank on you. I didn't want to have to do this. I'm with the Mattress Police. There are no tags on these mattresses."

[after paying his ex-wife's attorney, Fletch walks him to the door]
Fletch: "Keep ten for yourself. Go and get yourself a nice piece of ass."

[to a Doberman pinscher]
Fletch: "Look, defenseless babies!"

Gail Stanwyk: "What are you doing here?"
Fletch: "I ordered some lunch."
Gail Stanwyk: "You ordered it here?"
Fletch: "Well, I knew this is where my mouth would be."

Miriam: Why wouldn't I tell him that his pure, darling little girl was having a dirty little affair with a married man?
Charlotte: You're a vile, sorry little bitch.

Jewel Mayhew:
Well, right here on the public street, in the light of day, let me tell you, Miriam Deering, that murder starts in the heart, and its first weapon is a vicious tongue.

Shakes The Clown (1991)

Female Clown Barfly: "I got one of them peanut butter pussies: it's brown, smooth and easy to spread."

Owen Cheese: "You clowns are on dope!"
Binky the Clown: "Where you going old man? You didn't see nuthin' alright? You saw five happy, jolly clowns sittin' around eating a big plate of beef. White- powdery- beef."

HoHo the Clown: "Oh, yeah? Well, the only show YOU could ever star in would be a show called the... Not... Funny... DIARRHEA CLUB!"

The great Lorne Greene. Even though it lasted one season, he will always be remembered by me as Commander Adama in the original Battlestar Galactic.

As Jim Rockford said he will always be remembered as Ben Cartwright in Bonanza but yes Lorne Greene as Adama in Battle Star Galactica was probably his last great role. I always loved his voice, he had such a smooth beautiful voice for voice overs and documentaries.

Always loved this scene in Earthquake with Ava Gardner and Lorne Greene, Ava looked glamorous wearing that hat.

Ava Gardner and Lorne Greene - Earthquake.jpg
and this is the transcript

ROYCE: You realize what you're asking?

What's happening with you two?

REMY: He's been seeing Brian Marshall's widow.

ROYCE: He feels obligated to help her and her boy.

REMY: Albert Schweitzer wasn't that dedicated to mankind.

ROYCE: There's more to it, Remy.

It was Stuart who assigned Brian that propane cavern job.

He's blamed himself for what happened.

REMY: Dad, don't be so naive. They're having an affair.

ROYCE: When you met Stuart, he was a dirt-poor boy...

going to college on an athletic scholarship.

I think you still half-see him that way.

He's a top man now. He doesn't need me or anybody.
Every firm in town would take him.
