Fifita gamble pays off for Flanagan

Cronulla coach Shane Flanagan revealed he called Wests Tigers' bluff in a bid to ensure Andrew Fifita would become a Sharks player in 2012.
Having lost key front-rowers Luke Douglas and Kade Snowden to the Gold Coast Titans and Newcastle respectively, Flanagan was desperate to sign experienced replacements.
The Tigers, facing salary cap pressures after agreeing a massive deal for Melbourne's Adam Blair, offered Bryce Gibbs to the Sharks despite the 27-year-old, who won a premiership with the club in 2005, having three years left on his contract.
Although he was more than happy to sign Gibbs, Flanagan admitted he gambled by threatening to pull out of the deal unless the hard-running Fifita was part of the package.
The joint-venture were reluctant to part with one of their best young players, who's one of the most exciting forwards in the game and has been tipped for future representative honours.
But with the threat of the Blair deal not going through, the Tigers agreed to let the 22-year-old move to Shark Park and Flanagan believes his gain is very much the Tigers' loss.
"We did a deal with the Tigers, they needed to free-up some money in the salary cap quickly and they decided to let Bryce Gibbs go," Flanagan told AAP.
"I put it to them that they we could take Andrew. I then told them we wouldn't take one without the other and it was good luck to us that we got him.
"He's an X-factor type of player. He's not a typical front-rower. He can unload and has a good turn of foot and I'm looking forward to him being in our team."
Fifita and Gibbs will be joined by fellow front-rowers Jon Green, Ben Ross and Mark Taufua in the new boys' corner at Shark Park.
They arrive along with Parramatta's grand final halfback Jeff Robson, 2010 Dally M Medal winner Todd Carney and Newcastle hooker Isaac De Gois as Flanagan overhauled his squad in a bid to make the finals for the first time since 2008.
The former Kangaroos assistant coach said his team will be the strongest since he took over from Ricky Stuart midway through the 2010 season, but still looking for reinforcements in his backline.
"I am happy with what we have recruited, next step is to get an Origin or Kangaroos standard back, then we can really threaten," he said.

and the other thing that concerns me here is what if he has to use this same tactic again when trying to buy players ..will he get called on it..the old 'boy who cried wolf'

a great move here by flanno with the tigers coup, just wish he would keep it inhouse and not put it out there

Yeah, come on Flanno, how about zipping it for once!
You didnt need to put it out there how you're a tricky bastard!
Imagine how the likes of Pom and Besty, let alone Mills and the NZ centre, must feel, everytime you put it out there that you need a Rep Centre - good player management -NOT!

Well, on Talkin Sport thisarv, Tunks said he'll swim to NZ & Hughes said it would be a miracle of sport if the Sharks won a GF.

Wonder if Flanno would swim with him seeing as he agrees.

Tunks and Hughes can stick it up their **ses. Does anyone value their opinion, especially Tunks?

Maybe Flanagan is shoving a rocket up the threequarters. Sometimes staff, that's what players are, need to be put on notice. Most everyone on here says we need outside backs. Flanagan says he'd like an origin or kangaroo level centre.
If you haven't got one of course you'd like one. If the ones already there can't cope with that then boo ***kin' hoo.

Fifita has really impressed me with his talk on twitter. Seems he is getting stuck into the extras, eating well and training hard. I think the tigers is round one is the best thing for him as he seems extremely motivated to step up. A very far cry from the "beats sitting at home playing playstation" player we signed. Perhaps Gallen and Smith may have had a word to him about how good he could actually be.

Flanagan really needs to zip it when discussing recruitment strategy. He needs to watch the Godfather 'don't let anyone outside the family know what you are thinking'.

Fifita was a good get and everyone knows how he did it but please keep it to yourself.

Fair enough point about needing an origin standard outside back. It is obvious. Hopefully, we play a better brand of footy that might attract a decent centre, snd even better actually develop one. We have played boring for 10 years now with very little success.

If Ben Pommeroy could catch the footy Flano may not need to say the obvious.

I am really looking forward to Fifita in the black white and blue, and Gibbsy to.

Fifita is an exciting forward that likes to hurt.

I agree, why talk does bennett/any other coach do it.
Or is it just taken out of context

Fifita is a good pickup but Gibbs is better. So far as your backs, if they hole run Carney is good enough to feed them quality ball...you'll go OK. It is your fullback who will benefit most from Carney and Fifita, all he has to do is follow these two.

I hate to break it to you guys BUT OUR CENTRES ARE SHITHOUSE!!!!!! Pomeroy and Best should not be allowed near the top squad let alone play in it.
I'd be more worried if he came out and said "with this squad we will win the comp"! At least he is being honest and realistic - you never know it may stir the two ole boys up a bit????
