Any chance you guys could just concede this one and let us through to the GF qualifier?

It would really help our chances of beating the Roosters next week if you give us this week off to rest and recuperate.

Really... As long as the Roosters don't make the GF, you guys will be happy right?
You asked nicely and I will answer nicely. NO WAY.

If we can't win it ( Personally I think we are long odds to beat you guys ) then happy to see you win the premiership...Don't want Roosters or Storm to win it.

Late Mail: Dragons face tough decisions on injured stars

All four clubs have injury decisions to make leading into their must-win clashes in week two of the Telstra Premiership finals.

Cronulla have found their replacement for injured back-rower Wade Graham, while Penrith's Viliame Kikau is one of a host of players getting through games with pain.

South Sydney have injury clouds over two of their key men but St George Illawarra, who went through the season relatively injury-free, have been hit hardest in recent weeks with Gareth Widdop's year likely over and question marks over a number of players.

South Sydney Rabbitohs v St George Illawarra Dragons, Saturday 7.40pm at ANZ Stadium

Rabbitohs: Back-up playmaker Connor Tracey was named in the 21-man squad on Tuesday with Adam Reynolds battling a shoulder injury. Greg Inglis (ribs) is expected to play, while Angus Crichton had overcome illness that hampered his game last week. Prop Mark Nicholls will also push for selection against the Dragons as his return from a fractured fibula progresses well, with the club hopeful he will prove his fitness during skills sessions this week.

Dragons: Jack de Belin said he was progressing well from an ankle injury on Tuesday and was confident he will suit up against South Sydney on Saturday night. On Wednesday he was out of a mooboot at training. James Graham needs to pass concussion testing after his sickening collision with Korbin Sims last week. Euan Aitken is expected to receive the green light for a return with Paul McGregor left with a decision to make. Zac Lomax on Wednesday conceded he was unsure if he would retain his place in the starting centres despite being named in the No.3 jersey.

South Sydney Rabbitohs

Adam Reynolds (shoulder, finals week two)
Adam Doueihi (knee, season)
Richie Kennar (foot, indefinite)
Greg Inglis (ribs, finals week two)

St George Illawarra Dragons

Gareth Widdop requires follow-up scans with fears he needs shoulder surgery as soon as possible after re-dislocating the joint in Sunday's big win over Brisbane. The season-ending injury to Widdop will also put his international career with England on ice over the off-season.

Paul Vaughan (foot, season)
Jason Nightingale (elbow, finals week two)
Gareth Widdop (shoulder, season)
Jack de Belin (foot, finals week two)
James Graham (concussion, finals week two)

MATCH PREVIEW

Rabbitohs v Dragons: Mann the man for Red V; Souths name same 17

A mammoth crowd is expected at ANZ Stadium on Saturday night when South Sydney and St George Illawarra, who have two of the biggest supporter bases in the NRL, face off in the Telstra Premiership finals.

The Rabbitohs are battered and bruised after their narrow loss to Melbourne to kick off their play-off campaign while the Dragons' stunning win in Brisbane was soured by the loss of skipper Gareth Widdop with a dislocated shoulder.

For the Bunnies, their forward pack will be amped up to cancel out the Dragons with the Burgess brothers - Sam, George and Tom - in red-hot form this season.

St George Illawarra got the better of the Bunnies in their first meeting this year, a 16-12 victory at Kogarah in round five.

The Rabbitohs got their revenge in round 10 with a 24-10 triumph at ANZ Stadium.

Key match-up: Damien Cook v Cameron McInnes. The respective dummy-halves have a history and a rivalry - Cook came through the juniors in the Illawarra before making a go of his NRL career at the Rabbitohs while McInnes is a Souths product who has hit his straps the past two years after switching to the Dragons. Cook is an attacking dynamo while McInnes gets through a mountain of defensive work and is always a key performer for the Dragons in getting playmakers Ben Hunt and Gareth Widdop opportunities to get their backs into space.

For the Rabbitohs to win: They need to shrug off the disappointment of last Friday's loss to Melbourne at AAMI Park. Last year, Parramatta went close to knocking off the Storm and then bombed out of the finals the following week. If the Rabbitohs can't get themselves back up for this game, they could be stung by the Dragons just like Brisbane were in the first round of the playoffs.

For the Dragons to win: They can't listen to the outside noise - they were underdogs against Brisbane but played like raging hot favourites. They will be given little chance against Souths, particularly without Widdop, but Paul McGregor won't care about the odds - he will be focused on instilling belief in his players that they can continue to silence their critics.

Rabbitohs Stat Attack: South Sydney are the entertainers of 2018, scoring the most points (610) and tries (103) in the competition. They also engage the line (425) more than any other team. Five-eighth Cody Walker is his team's X-factor, but he needs to reduce his handling errors (20).

Dragons Stat Attack: The Red V lead the standings when it comes to tackle busts (933). Fullback Matt Dufty is electrifying on his day, and with 1270m only sits behind Roger Tuivasa-Sheck and Valentine Holmes when it comes to kick return metres. Hooker Cameron McInnes has conceded 29 penalties.

And another thing: The battle of the back-rowers will be a beauty. John Sutton and Angus Crichton are tough as nails, while NSW Blues pair Tariq Sims and Tyson Frizell blitzed the hyped Broncos pack last Sunday at Suncorp Stadium.

Craig Wing's tip: The Storm game was played at a higher level than all the other games and it was there to be won for Souths. I worry it took a bit out of them but they have an extra two days to recover. The Dragons forwards won't be able to roll through the middle as easily as they did against Brisbane and with the Dragons injuries, especially to Gareth Widdop, it makes things a whole lot more difficult. Rabbitohs by 12.

Still think a lot will revolve around cook too his speed out of dummy half needs to be nullified as well
Glad you brought this up mate re Cook....theres been little talk of him this week even on here and was about to comment myself....everyones focussed on the Burgess bros and their power game and Inglis etc but like you its vital we control Cook...his darts from dummy half can tire our forward pack very quickly...would like to see McInnes turn the tables on Souths and do likewise.....the other x factor for Souths is Gagai everyone looks to contain Inglis but this bloke bares watching

Definitely Cook puts the most fear into me. I see that up the middle can be our biggest potential weakness and he's had us and many a team pedalling backwards throughout the year.

The thing with Cook is that he has lots of his own players just waiting for him to run so they can back him up or get a role on after a quick play the ball.
If Cook makes a break we have to make sure we heard him to the sideline if possible because if he ends up in the middle of the paddock giving them options either side then it will be difficult to defend.
We have to do likewise and have plenty of darts out of dummy half with Dufty & Mann sniffing around it and that will put real pressure on their big blokes and will test their fitness levels to the max.

Any chance you guys could just concede this one and let us through to the GF qualifier?

It would really help our chances of beating the Roosters next week if you give us this week off to rest and recuperate.

Really... As long as the Roosters don't make the GF, you guys will be happy right?
Lol
Mate, we dont have that kind of pull, can I suggest you approach James Graham and Tariq Sims, I’m sure they’d be open to helping you out.

Dragons rookie Zac Lomax prepared for Greg Inglis in NRL finals clash
AFL
r0_85_3829_2178_w1200_h678_fmax.jpg

Prepared for anything: Dragons youngster Zac Lomax is ready for any role Paul McGregor throws his way on Saturday. Picture: Adam McLean.

When Zac Lomax fractured his wrist in a boxing training accident in May, he feared his chances of playing finals football in 2018 were over.

Now having worked his way back to fitness and toiled away in the NSW Cup until his opportunity came, the 18-year-old is preparing to line up opposite his idol after playing the best game of his fledgling career a week ago.

The change in circumstances comes as a surprise to Lomax, but it’s an opportunity he’s relishing.

“To be honest I didn’t [think I’d be in this position], but I hoped that it would come,” Lomax said. “I guess you’ve just got to go back to training, work hard and do what you get told to do at training and just be around the boys and just be as positive as you can at training.”

The opportunity to return to the first-grade side only came after Euan Aitken injured his hamstring in the round 24 loss to the Bulldogs.

Aitken is expected to return this week and, with coach Paul McGregor keeping has cards close to his chest, Lomax is faced with the challenging task of not knowing what his role will be on Saturday night, if he is used at all.

But one thing Lomax does know is that childhood idol Greg Inglis will be ready and waiting for him.

“It just all comes down to preparation, you just stick to the same routine and just know what you have got to do, who you are coming up against and your role for the team.

“I am still unsure whether I will play, that is entirely up to Mary. If Euan plays, he showed what he can do against GI earlier in the season but I can do the job if I do get the nod.”

Where many 18-year-olds would be overawed playing in an NRL final at a packed Suncorp Stadium, Lomax looked at home on the Dragons right edge.

That came as no surprise to his St Geoge Illawarra teammates.

While there has been plenty of hype surrounding the Illawarra junior, his fellow Dragons see the work he puts in at training and they have no doubts he has the talent to become a future star.

“Everyone’s seen it now,” fullback Matt Dufty said. “He’s got talent and skill, he’s going to have a long future in the game. He’s proved he can play NRL in the last couple of weeks he’s played.”

The uncertainty surrounding Aitken has a flow-on to the remainder of the backline, with Nene Macdonald unsure who his right-edge partner will be.

After shifting from the left wing to the right, Macdonald has partnered with both players in recent weeks. The two have very different styles of play but Macdonald is confident whoever McGregor picks will thrive.

“They’re two completely different styles of players,” Macdonald said.

“Euan loves to run the ball at full speed and hit the line hard. Zac’s got good footwork, he’s tough to stop near the line and can get outside you or inside you. They’re two different styles, but two good players.

“Whoever plays has got a big job this week. GI’s in good form and it’s finals time, it’ll be an exciting challenge for us.”
