i think reports were for a figure around the 120 - 150k mark. we're massively over-spending on walsh for sure - given that he is the black sheep of the halves at the club at the moment.

How much is he on anyway?

What does it matter if he is getting paid alot or crap if he isnt up to the standard then it doesnt deserve to play FG. I'd pick Duearu over Walshy every day

It isn't about whether or not he should be playing first grade because of his salary - it is entirely about wasting more than 6 figure sums on a reserve grader ( whoever it is ) when it can affect the salary cap.

Ahh the daily Everyone vs. Karma re: Dureau arguement. Love it.

You have to admit Karma, Scotty offers more to the team as a whole then Bailey - therefore he should get the starting spot.

Plan A for 2009 is to build a team around Scotty D.
Smith will have a plan B and a plan C and even a plan D - but just as plan A for 2008 was to build a team around Luke Walsh, Scotty will get a whole off season and the trials to show how he can run the side.

I hope that's true Roops. But why is Smitty giving Bailey all this FG experience when he is leaving to go to Manly. We signed Scotty for 3 years and should be giving him all the experience he can get to improve for 2009.

If Plan A is Scott Dureau to be our halfback for 2009, he should be our halfback for the rest of 2008.

Simple as that.

Otherwise if he isn't deemed good enough for the rest of 2008, what hope does it really give us for 2009? How many years/games does it take for a bloke to " develop ", and what does it say about the guys like Chris Sandow who step straight into first grade and dominate a game like they were born to do so. ( Not that I rate Sandow much either  - he won't be playing first grade in 5 years )

Agreed. Maybe bailey on the bench, but not at 5/8.

I think we will see the 2009 game plan the day Smith decides we are officially no chance to make the finals. Just for now he sees the Mullen led side as our best option to win games.

Mullo leads the second rower, centre and winger on his outside and thats about it. No offense to Jarrod but i think it gives him to much to think about being at halfback. The other side of the field have no organisation and the forwards often run the wrong lines.

Atleast when Dureau is on everyone has a clue. He gets both sides of the park working together and tells the forwards when to man up.

Does that situation worry anyone else here apart from just me?!

I mean if Smith is going to start picking the team for 2009, and I'm sure we all assume Smith has been picking the very best side available to try and win this season, then what does it realistically say about our teams chances for 2009?

What will change in the offseason that will make us contenders in 2009, that we cannot use this year to win in 2008?

Every other team will fold due to financial pressure leaving just us and the Gold Coast left in the comp. They will have their usual mid season injury disastor and we will play the Tweed Head Seagulls in the grand final.

Dureau kicks a field goal to win in the first ever golden point grand final. :p

Players make dramatic improvements in the off season under Smith. They went backwards under Hagan, but we have seen guys like Pato, Jimmy, Jesse and many others run out for game one of a season and look like different players since Smith has been here.
All our guys will be working on new skills and even positions in the off season. I won't be surprized if Vuna is an impact forward by next season.

I wonder what Luke Walsh thinks of that comment.

Not to mention the argument that Corey Patterson arguably was playing better footy in 2007 than 2008. And I'm 100000% certain Chris Houston was playing better footy for St George last year too.
