would they speak english? i don't mean that as a racist thing, but surely that would hurt communication within the team

the way you guys are carrying on, it seems like the ru world cup is full of players like burt and lyon. but let's keep it real, we ARE better off signing players from souths first division!

Dunno about the language barrier mate.

But I tell you one thing - the Japanese wingers are world-renowned; their number 8 plays in NZ (so he can't be a complete failure) and the French - well, they are essentially "leaguifying" union with their style of play.

Not every team has great backs. Union is a very different game to League. But some players are great and have great talent. My picks would be:

Ohata
Barker
Michelak
Waugh
CAVUBATI (big Fijian prop; 130 kilos of raw man; he can actually play 80 minutes, so if he switched to league he could play at least 30 minute bursts; plus he's huge; only problem is he is slow and not agile, so he would be a liability in defence).
Umaga (I wish)
Caucaunibuca
Lyons (he'd be great at lock I reckon)

If we had Lyons I would put him straight in the front row pure and simple. He is agile but the dude is huge.

I like your idea about the Japanese winger - the little bloke is bloody quick. If you get a chance have a look at the fullback for Tonga - he almost got them the win against Wales.

*cough* Greg Drake... *cough*

I watched Fiji vs France and Cavubati only got through 60mins, and he was huffing and puffing a fair bit, and only just getting to the breakdowns. He wouldn't cope in defence with League's fast(er) flowing game.

OK, so he only plays 60.

But he could come off the bench and play 15 to 20 and be a real attacking weapon.

And I agree - that Tongan fullback is a gun!
