THE WOW Brisbane Broncos will appeal a minor breach of the second-tier salary cap after it was handed notice of a $17,045 breach for the 2009 season yesterday.
Broncos’ chief executive Bruno Cullen said the club would fight the breach after some payments for under-20 National Youth Competition players, who work under their own cap, was also counted in the second-tier cap.
The NYC players had been used in the NRL after the Broncos went through a major injury crisis.
The NRL cap auditors have agreed the top-25 NRL salary cap was not breached.
“We are going to appeal the breach,” said Cullen.
“I’d like to explain that the Broncos have not breached the top-25 NRL salary cap.
“This breach notice has to do with a technicality involved with the second-tier cap where NYC players were used to fill in for injured NRL players.
