My lovely daughter Angela cooked a superb roast pork dinner for us. There was only 4 of us this year but 3 out of 4 are Dragon faithfuls, one, my son in law, is a Rabbit. Hope you all had a good Christmas too.
I did the pork on my Weber and it came up great. My eldest daughter and my son in law joined me in going for the crackling. The son in law is a Chook, but he sometimes comes with me and cheers for the Dragons - especially if we are playing the rabbits.

Good news from Flanno over the progress by Tyrell Sloan. Says the kid is ''doing the hard yards'' since returning to training. Adds he is so keen that he has been training by himself even over the festive season.
I'm backing flanno to toughen him up and turn him into a gun fullback in the Inglis mode long term. The Lomax talk to fullback is just a threat to fire Sloan up imo and it seems to be working from these reports...

I don't think that fitness or strength were the main problem for Sloan. Confidence under the high ball, one-on-one defense, field position in defense and an ability to keep talking to his backline to plug those holes are all the things he needs to address. In my opinion, these things need to be worked on in a team environment.

Correct, but I do think strength was lacking - but the whole team seemed to have that affliction at times.

You may have that spot on. The kid has never pulled any punches about his burning desire to make the position his own. But he has to face facts that both his scrawny physique and defensive attitude and technique need a major overhaul if he is to live his dream.

Confidence under the high ball,
He had nailed that aspect by the back end of the season as I took close note and feel safe to say he never shirked positioning himself under a bomb or spilled a ball in his last 8/10 games.

Certainly not fitness as he was named the best in the NRL. He did lack the strength needed in ball returns, was rag dolled for most of the time, reason he needs some more bulk on those bones. This will also give him more confidence among the ruff stuff such as kick returns when he faces two/three defenders.
one-on-one defense,
Due to lack of confidence and attitude. He had the pace to reach his man but nailing him was another matter, as too often he went hi when he shud've gone low. In his defense, re his defense (sorry about that) such was our abysmal inside covering he was often confronted by more than only a single guy hell bent on crossing the whitewash.

Sloan debuted in June 2021 just after turning 19yrs of age a week earlier

Papenhuyzen debuted in a gun team at 20yrs of age just about to turn 21yrs that same month

Sloan that means was two years younger on debut ie 23months difference in age. PapenHuyzen was the Australian Schoolboy gun then almost 3 seasons later debuted at Melbourne.

Sloan had played wing for NSW Schoolboys

I mean seriously where Paps catches more than 80% of his kicks vs Sloan is on a different planet let alone half of the field.

Imagine the coaching Papen would have received leading up to his debut 2 years older than Sloan and way more experienced at FB and two more seasons playing ressies !!!! Plus a few pre seasons with the top30 is just invaluable !

2024 will be the test for Tyrell.........the rest was an intro well before his time

It's always easier playing in a team that is top 4 than a team at the bottom playing fullback , Reverse the players and teams then let's see how that goes .......

It's all hypothetical in regards to Sloane. The question now is will he get better with descent coaching or is he damaged goods.
He has no confidence in putting his body on the line under the high ball and defending his try line.

And don't forget Papen started in the NRL off the bench, and when he came on played in the forwards. That would've quickly got him used to the physicality of NRL. But clearly flanno has recognised Sloan's deficiencies in the physical side of things and is taking steps to address them. Sloan has too much talent to discard now, so let's give him a chance under some proper coaching.

Sloan I feel played under a lot of pressure from day 1 under a bad coach. He was scared of being dropped, like he was after a Sharks game in howling conditions. He was maybe trying too hard and sometimes when you try hard not to make an error you make it worse. He was young at the time he started his NRL career.

Now he may be able to play his natural game. Thanks to Carr for giving him a good string of games last season as that would taught him a lot I feel. You learn more from mistakes than anything else so he will be much better this season.

I just watched a couple of Warriors games involving Ronald Volkman and he's a long way off being a regular 1st grader. His kicking game is really solid but his attack, organization and defence are works in progress. The Warriors played him pretty wide in defence, at times outside his centre. He did ok as a supporting 5/8 playing with Johnson in Round 5 but really had low involvement, just kicks and a bit of dummy half - it was his first game for the Warriors, I understand that but he must have been under instructions to take it easy, let Johnson run the show. The other game (no Johnson) in the 7 jersey supporting Te Maire Martin in the 6 he was pretty poor really, with the Dolphins targeting him in defence a bit and showing him up rather badly (Bennett exploits a weakness like no other). He offered nothing in attack or working plays but again his kicking was pretty good. Short and stocky and underdone in the fitness stakes but could be handy in reserves and maybe a game or two alongside Hunt to ease him into 1sts. I'd be worried if we ran him and Kyle on as our halves, that could be disastrous in a headless chook kinda way.

So a clear equivalent to Amone ?
