The thing is this, I like a drink, I have also smoked during my life, and swore, and had sex out of marriage. Now if you take his original quote, I am 4 times more likely to go to hell than homosexuals.
It was much easier to be up and outraged over that single part of the bible quote than take the whole thing in context.
I don’t agree with him for one minute. But he has a right to speak his beliefs. As do you. As do I. As do anyone. The media beat it up as hate speech because it was like gold.
I understand you have your opinion, no worries, but let’s look at the football and not judge him for his beliefs.
Sure, let's put it in context.
When it comes to violent backlash from hate speech, who do you think has the greater reason for concern?
Atheists, adulters, drinkers or gays?
The LGBT community has every reason to be concerned about hate speech. It wasn't that long ago that violence against them was common and police turned a blind eye. The crimes against them included being beaten to death and thrown off cliffs. We're talking about recent history.
I have no idea why people keep thinking that hate speech is free speech, particularly when there exists the real possibility that it can result in violence against innocent minorities.
That's no media beat up. There are people around today who lived through that hatred, and survived.
Any pushback against equality needs to called out for what it is.
