Former League Star Charged With Assault

A former international rugby league star will appear in a Waikato court on Tuesday charged with an assault that left one female witness stunned.
The Waikato Times has chosen not to identify the man who is understood to have been involved in an altercation with his daughter outside a Waikato police station just after 1pm yesterday.
A 27-year-old woman who witnessed the scuffle said she saw two women walking out of the police station when the man jumped out of a vehicle and began verbally abusing the girl.
In the ensuing altercation the woman said she saw the man grab the girl around the neck.
The girl then fell to the ground.
"[The man] got back in his [vehicle] and took off," the woman said.
Aided by her friend, the girl walked back into the police station to report the incident.
Late last night, Waikato police confirmed the man was arrested hours later on an assault charge.
He was released on bail to appear in court next week.
He was co-operating fully with the police investigation.
The witness said the man, whom she immediately recognised, was wearing a hat, dark clothing and "colourful sports shoes".
"Heaps of people saw him – there was a huge line of traffic that would have seen everything as well," she said.
The woman said she was surprised at the man's aggressive behaviour.
"Especially given how public the area is where it all went down – I couldn't believe it."

Gutter media . . .is all I can say.
Worry about the his previous profression.

not a troubled child . . . obviously leaving a police station for a reason.

if someone named the wrong person and that person got to hear about it that person could sue the person who named him and the site the person wrongly named him on.

I agree, T is 45...

Thing that irks me is the media always have to bring up the sport he person played. If he's a bricklayer(example) then why not say a 45 yr old bricklayer.

Cause then it wouldn't be a story of interest to the public. About the only remotely interesting aspect of this story is that the alleged perpetrator is a public sports figure.

Tawera Nikau to face court after row with daughter over care of children

Rugby league great Tawera Nikau is said to be devastated after being charged with assault in a long-running feud with his daughter.

The former Kiwis test star will appear in Huntly District Court on Tuesday after an alleged confrontation outside the Waikato town's police station on Friday.

Former teammate and business partner Richie Barnett said Friday's incident was the culmination of a bitter dispute between Nikau and Heaven.

Nikau and his wife Hayley had been helping with custody of Heaven's two children, aged 5 and 4, and had been concerned about their welfare. Nikau and Hayley married in 2006 and have a 6-year-old daughter.

The couple were pursuing legal avenues to gain formal custody of the children, said Barnett.

"She's got mental health issues. They are looking after the kids and she wants them back," Barnett said.

Barnett added Nikau was upset about the incident. "He's disappointed at what's happened."

Huntly resident Polly Nepe, who took in Heaven as a boarder for more than a year, said she was looking after the kids last weekend when Heaven arrived demanding to take them.

"Heaven said she wasn't going to give them back. That's how this whole thing happened. I feel a bit responsible because they were taken from my home." Nepe said Nikau had come to her house the following day trying to find the children, and had been upset.

"We tried to calm him down but he was pretty angry. He said that it's her that's causing the trouble."

Nepe said that Heaven had issues with alcohol and would go away for days on end, leaving the children with friends.

"As far as I am concerned, she is not a fit mother. The kids have more brains than she has."

Yesterday, the Herald on Sunday was buzzed through secure gates that led to Nikau's sprawling mansion in Ohinewai but then met with a cold reception at the front door.

A young man said Nikau was not at home, despite three black 4WDs, including a company car for Aotearoa Construction, filling the garages.

He refused to pass on a message to Nikau saying, "no, we don't want it," when handed contact details. Young children could be heard in the background.

A few kilometres down the road his brother, Victor Nikau, did not know about the incident but said, "has this got something to do with his daughter?"

Several family members drinking at the local pub were surprised and disappointed about the assault charge.

They said Nikau had a placid nature and always "spoiled" his children, especially since their mother died.

A cousin, who asked not to be named, said Heaven was a "drama queen" who would have triggered her dad's anger. However, she said it was no excuse for the alleged assault.

Waikato police said in a statement that a 45-year-old male was arrested outside the Huntly Police Station on Friday afternoon over a domestic assault. They gave no other details.

Witnesses told the Waikato Times Nikau, 45, grabbed a woman by the neck, causing her to fall to the ground.

Sir Peter "The Mad Butcher" Leitch got behind Nikau last night: "The man I know is a wonderful, wonderful person who I would go to war for.

"I love him dearly, he's never turned down any charity work.

"Irrespective, he will always be the Mad Butcher's friend."

Well, if it wasn't captured as "rugby league great", or "former kiwis test star", or "a former international rugby league star" the only other title the media would feel obligated to use would be "45 year old Male Maori". In the Truth maybe "One legged man strangles daughter."

Headlines sells papers and bullshit women's magazines!
