Four Broncos cleared of sex assault allegations

Does anyone else think there's a good chance there won't be any charges laid and the media will look like c**ks?

Innocent until proven guilty. If guilty of something serious (I don't even know what they may or may not be charged of anymore) then sack them.

I think there's quite a good chance that charges won't happen. I suspect there's a fair chance the woman will decide for some reason (eg someone paid her off, or she decided she wasn't willing to have her name dragged through the mud, or it just wasn't worth all the hassle she will have to go through) and the case will collapse for lack of evidence. It would be very hard to prove a case like this where the argument is over consent and by all reports those involved were very drunk. Unless there are witnesses, or by some chance the video is recoverable and shows her revoking consent and the guys ignoring her.

Doesn't mean bad things didn't happen though. And the club may act on a lower standard of proof in its code of conduct investigation - they may be satisfied that the players have acted detrimentally to the club's interests, which is probably grounds for dismissal.

Lets face it - being absolutely smashed in public in the middle of a finals series, partaking in group sex activities with a stranger in a public place, and then seeking to film it (presumably for later team masturbatory enjoyment) are not exactly family friendly/sponsor friendly activities. Nor do they reflect a great deal of intelligence in the "what is an acceptable way for me to behave in public, especially after all the other sh*t there's been with NRL players" stakes.

I think the NRL should pressure the Broncos to get their internal investigation done asap, and based on that, take appropriate action, which might include suspending the players if they think what has happened is bad enough.

Just on the police minister....according to Fox News she is also the Sports Minister? If so...she's kind of torn in this situation.

Broncos say toilet sex was consensual

Jamie Pandaram and Brad Walter | September 17, 2008

BRONCOS players have denied sexually assaulting a woman in a nightclub toilet on Saturday night, claiming the act was consensual.

But the three players, who have been named to face Melbourne in Saturday night's sudden-death semi-final at Suncorp Stadium, will play the remainder of the NRL season with the allegation hanging over their heads after Queensland Police Minister Judy Spence yesterday revealed the investigation could take weeks.

It is believed that Karmichael Hunt, Darius Boyd and Sam Thaiday have been helping police with their investigations.

Speculation last night that investigators had seized the players' mobile phones in the hope of discovering footage of the incident could not be confirmed by police, but sources close to the players are adamant no filming took place.

Brisbane chief executive Bruno Cullen yesterday met detectives investigating the allegations made by a 24-year-old woman, who told police she was sexually assaulted in the male toilets of the Alhambra Lounge in inner-city Fortitude Valley on Saturday night.

The Broncos are conducting their own internal investigation into the incident, which occurred after a group of up to eight players went on a lengthy drinking session upon their arrival back in Brisbane on Saturday following the previous night's defeat of Sydney Roosters.

Queensland Premier Anna Bligh said government sponsorship would come under review if the club failed to act over player misbehaviour, and it is understood the transport department was already planning to re-evaluate its backing of the Broncos at the end of the season.

But Spence, who also doubles as the Queensland Sports Minister, urged Broncos fans not to abandon their team ahead of the 2006 grand final rematch.

"The police have got a lot of work to do before they conclude their investigation," she said. "I was talking to the acting commissioner [Kathy Rynders] this morning, and she is telling me it is likely that it will take another couple of weeks before they conclude their investigation. Until that happens I am not going to be pre-judging the actions of these players.

"I would encourage people not to pre-judge these players or the events surrounding this incident on the weekend, come along to the Broncos match this weekend."

But many readers of Fairfax's brisbanetimes.com.au website have already vented anger over the behaviour of some players, including incidents previous to Saturday night of drunken and inappropriate behaviour.

Under the club's internal code of conduct, none of the players has breached regulations by going on a drinking binge because they had been given the weekend off. They may, however, find themselves in hot water if allegations of spitting at members of the public, groping women or queue jumping at taxi stands are proved. One Broncos player has developed quite a reputation as a party animal and the club is concerned he is influencing young teammates. Without the core group of senior players Brisbane once relied on to keep the team on the straight and narrow, a drinking culture has emerged, with players regularly embarking on all-day sessions.

A behavioural expert, Griffith University's Michael Jeh, told ABC radio the club should "take a stand" and suspend the trio for binge drinking, regardless of the investigation's outcome.

But the Broncos have no plans to stand down the three after they told club officials and police that they had not sexually assaulted the woman. The only official comment from the club was in the form of a statement issued by Cullen.

"The Brisbane Broncos' internal investigation team has continued its work today on the allegations against three of its players," he said. "As advised yesterday, the team is co-operating with Queensland police in this regard.

"This morning I met with two senior police officers in charge of the police investigation and we covered the process followed to date by both parties.

"We also confirmed our resolve to work together to ensure all the facts are presented by all witnesses. The Broncos have taken further steps this afternoon to make sure this happens in an orderly and practical manner, as soon as possible."

Principal sponsor WOW Sight and Sound would not comment.

prolly already been said, but these guys are absolute fugwits.

fancy going out and getting sozzled the day after a game. sure us weekend warriors do it all the time but these morons are paid to be in the best shape and to give themselves the best preparation at winning games of football. preparation for the following week's match in terms of recovery and rehydration should have begun straight after the final hooter went off on Friday night. im not saying that these guys cant have a drink, but there's no doubt they were heavily intoxicated. not just this, but they're getting fugged up during the most important month of their working year. how about a bit of restraint for a few weeks.

are these guys men, or are they merely immature morons who need to be spoon-fed all their life.

Well said. Hard to see any comments by apologists for the standards of footy public behaviour making dents in any of these points.

The Mut is a bit late. We can only really tolerate the one forum idiot per subject and Razor got first crack. Sorry!

But because I'm in a good mood I'll humour you for a bit. Seymour was sacked after an internal investigation was held and he was found to be in breach of the clubs code of conduct (not for the first time, mind you).

Mut is sure there is something in the Broncos COC that implies that filming your mates tag teaming a bird in the public urinal forbidden... Wouldnt you?

If mut was the chairman of the sharks he would be getting bird on the feild ASAP... Whats good for the goose is good for the gander...

Wooooo! Mut seeks parity...

Woooooo!

If the Broncos get up and win against the Storm this weekend I can only imgaine they will be back on the turps that nite and every female in Brisbane will be considered fair game whether they consent to certain conduct or not...you are class act Broncos and your fans and you are doing enormous damage to the product of legaue in the eyes of women than even Canterbury did a few years back with their fiasco!

They have set a precedent and given the iq of footballers and some of their supporters they will abuse what they think is their privilege!

Sharko, don't paint all the Brisbane fans with that brush my friend. There are plenty of Bronco's fans that want those players dumped too.

One of Brisbane's hip nightclubs has banned footballers, a day after sexual assault allegations were made against three high profile Broncos players.

The Uber nightclub at West End will no longer allow footballers in, but management says the decision's not related to sexual assault allegations against three Brisbane players.

Broncos and Queensland State of Origin stars Karmichael Hunt, Darius Boyd and Sam Thaiday have been named as the three players questioned by police over the alleged assault.

Uber has been in the headlines this year with two NRL players, Cronulla's Greg Bird and North Queensland's Sione Faumuina arrested after drink-related incidents.

Uber bar manager Isaac Zietek has told the Courier Mail the behaviour of some high-profile footballers has become progressively more disrespectful over the years and allowing them in is not worth the risk any more.

Yeah I heard that on the radio this morning, good on them tbh.
Apparently the boys were kicked out of a nightclub previously to entering this one,if they were intoxicated they should have been refused, however because they were footballers.....

Shut up Sharko. You just want the Broncos players to be kicked out so you have an easier game next week if we win.

I think that if all they have done is the toilet thing, and there was no sexual assault, and no police charge, then they should just be disciplined but not sacked. I really don't think its that serious (going on the evidence reported).

And I think there is a difference whether its in the finals or in the middle of the year, if it was the middle of the year a few games suspension would be warranted. But now I don't think it would be. The fans have been supporting all year and we still want to see our team win, and these three are pretty crucial to that, so just a large fine or something like that would be sufficient.

nothing. the broncos and police didn't even name the players and won't now that the complaint has been dropped. the players have suffered enough by having their names dragged through mud thanks to the media.

They're utter dickheads, and I'd have been happy to have them dropped even without a police charge, regardless of the importance of the game.

sharko:
It's nice of you not to paint all Broncos fans with the same brush, so as a courtesy, we promise not to consider all Sharks fans illiterate morons because of the impression you've made in this thread.

Complaint Dropped

Source: 4bc

Although it is quite plausible she was talked into dropping it after talking to police and lawyers and being told it would be difficult to prove a crime happened, or she just decided it wasn't worth getting her name dragged through the mud and all the hassles of a court case.
