Picking a coach is opinion and preference. Due diligence isn't applicable, we didn't miss that he's an ex crim or something.
Due diligence is about getting confirmation from sources other than the candidate about their credentials for the job at hand - these will either confirm or contradict the perceptions and opinions you have about the candidate and therefore give you a better understanding of their suitability.

Gus simply does not do this - he runs off his own gut feeling. Sometimes that is great but it can cause some real clangers that could be averted with just a bit of checking. There are a couple of recent cases in point with regard to appointments of high ranking officials.

I don't know about Griffin's capabilities or suitability but I do know that it is sensible to check your thoughts on a candidate against those that have had previously worked with them or employed them.

Just watched the press conference... Griffin has no f**king idea. Looks as though he couldn't care less if we win or lose. I can't stand this merkin at all.

He doesn't give a f**k. He must know he is bullet proof this year or something, he wasn't even desperate for a win pre-game when asked about it. Then the team comes out in a must win and gives up twenty odd f**king points in the first half.

Maybe the issue is the lack of viable options for coaching.

Outside Toovey who else is available???

Does Brenan get his shot??

an no-one better suggest Jason Taylor.....

It doesn't have to be someone with FG experience, could be a highly regarded assistant or super league coach out there.

Want a crazy suggestion?

Cooper Cronk.

I know what you're thinking, he's too young & we got burnt by Corey Payne. But Cooper Cronk is the most impressive footy player I've ever heard speak, he could be anything in the game.

How about this, Cronk comes in as an assistant to Gould for 2 years & then takes over?

Maybe I'm being a little crazy, but I'd take Cronk over many other coaches who have FG experience.

It is crazy. Besides Gould's health has been playing up and I doubt he would walk back into the grind of coaching.
Whatever club Cronk ends up at as a coach or assistant will reap the benefits of his brilliance.

Doesn't have to play out exactly as I said, but cooper Cronk would be a huge asset even as an assistant (as you said)

JD or Brennan for mine. Toovey could work. We just need to get rig of Griffin and this ridiculous game plan.

I hear ya, Cronk is no idiot. Had Thursty or Lockyer not been immortal-esque Cronk would have locked in a QLD and AU jersey in 10 years ago, always rated him.
Top bloke as well, very good stories about him and his work with sick children.
Fart Smella also.

I really can't remember the last time I was so shat off with the Panthers. This season has been so disappointing and embarassing some weeks. I really can't see any salvation unless there are key changes, starting with hooking Hook. But the reality is that it's not going to happen anytime soon, and it will likely be more of the same. I don't think Gus' ego would permit him to admit that he may have got this one wrong, and perhaps Cleary should still be coach.

We are a rabble , players on big money and not putting in as well as a captain that does not want the responsibility.Coach not getting selections right etc etc
Need I say more ?

Tbh it's kind of a relief we are so shit. I can disconnect and not sweat on games. The more we lose, the more likely it is the problem gets fixed. It felt different with Elliott, like he was doing just enough to not get sacked for ages. I can accept us being awful if Hook gets punted sooner.

Being shit is like an old friend to a long time fan.

But do you honestly see Gus admitting he was wrong aboit Griffin anytime soon? He sacked Cleary who was never this bad to bring him here. He will give him every opportunity IMO as he wont want to admit he was wrong.

I honestly think Gus would prefer to make excuses for him and watch us win a spoon than admit he was a huge mistake.

This season so far mirrors Clearys first year with us as far as results go. Only he had Walsh and Burns as halves. Blokes like Tighe, Daniela, Uaisele, Newton, Ciraldo, Galea, Armit etc. All getting NRL games.that was a rebuilding year and it was as successful as this season so far. We went on to win 6 more games that year.

If it gets bad enough I think he will. It'd honestly be easy to deflect the blame from himself. "Even Ben Hunt praised him but turns out he he didn't have it in him long term." Or the same treatment he gave Clearly: " He looked tired and stressed out aye".

I think we can all see that Griffin is not the man for the job......but who do you replace him with?
I cant see uncle Phil sacking him this season so what i would love too see is the club cut its losses after this season...pay out Griffin for 2018 and appoint the one guy who has done just about everything in coaching except have a nrl team fulltime....KEVIN WALTERS.

The guy won 6 comps, played under the best coaches, the players love him and he has more than done his time to get a shot... The guy is a WINNER,

Obviously with state of origin he cant coach this year but we should get him ASAP for next year and beyond.
