Four year deal for Boyd at knights

. How dare they look after themselves

Kin of goes against Tinkler's mantra of "out team, our town" doesn't it? I mean Issac isn't a local junior but he has been a great club man and has shown great loyalty when every hooker in the competition has been linked to the club over the last few months and a deal was all but done in early March.

A lesser person would have signed with someone else by now. And if he did and we were cut short by missing out on Boyd and Myles we would deserve what we got for f***ing the guy about.

Darius Boyd has provided St George Illawarra fans with hope he could remain in the red and white beyond 2011 with the star fullback revealing he has already agreed to a contract extension with the NRL premiers.

Boyd negotiated an upgraded three-year deal with the Dragons at the start of the year, but his future is by no means certain with the contract containing a clause allowing him to leave the club should coach Wayne Bennett exit.

With Bennett having agreed to join Newcastle on a four-year deal from 2012, it was assumed the Dragons had given up any hope of retaining the Queensland and Australian representative.

Boyd followed Bennett from the Broncos to the Dragons, and it was believed he would either follow his longtime mentor to the Knights or return to Queensland with either Brisbane or Gold Coast.

But Boyd claimed extending his stay in Wollongong remained a realistic option.

"I did that (re-signed) at the start of the year, they offered me a contract going forward as well for the next few years," Boyd told AAP.

Asked if the extension with the Dragons represented something of a fallback option if other deals fell through, Boyd said:

"Definitely not ... it's definitely an option still to stay.

"They've been a great club to me for two-and-a-half to three years now. A lot of the boys have been great, I love the area, I've really enjoyed my time. Either way, if I decide to leave it's going to be a hard decision."

Boyd's revelation represents a double bonus for Dragons fans, for even if he doesn't stay at the club his departure would leave plenty of room under the salary cap.

The Dragons were rumoured to be in the hunt for Manly whizkid Will Hopoate as a replacement for Boyd at fullback, but Hopoate stunned everyone by electing to undertake a two-year Mormon mission.

It is believed Boyd would have returned to the Broncos had Bennett agreed to go back to the club he built, but it is understood his desire to relocate to Newcastle is not as strong.

Boyd admitted parting company with Bennett would be difficult, but if the situation did arise, he hoped the two could maintain their bond.

"I'd hope so," Boyd said.

"... if that was the situation I'd try to keep in contact and have a chat to him every now and then.

"He's really someone I can look to for some guidance in football and in terms of life as well.

"I owe him a lot in both aspects."

Asked when he would make a decision on his whereabouts beyond 2011, Boyd said:

"It's something I want to get (finalised) pretty soon and hopefully I can organise all that in the coming weeks."

I'm pretty sick of his deliberations tbh.
I've always felt Boyd didn't want to come to Newcastle and since Bennett signed I've just told myself we wouldn't get Darius to ease any disappointment.

It has definitely been a case of 'no news is bad news' imo.

Oh well, might be time to move on soon and start planning for a spine with Gids at fullback and Henry/Roberts at 6.

Oh well it's his loss. We only want players at the club who are passionate about the Knights jersey.

I'm certain Bennett will unearth a few gems amongst our junior ranks that will play their hearts out for their coach and club.

I only want players at the Knights who want to be there. Boyd is showing all of the signs that he really doesn't want to come to Newcastle.

The Knights should give him an ultimatum ... sign by this coming Friday or the deal is off the table. There is too much at stake for the Knights when you consider that we are shedding players to fit Boyd under the cap.

I thought the reason we were telling players like De Gois, Paterson and Taufua to move on was so we could fit Boyd under the cap. Now what happens if we don't have any of them next year? Could we possibly have f**ked up?

this sounds like media beat up to me, the last qoutes of boyd was that he was leaving his decision till after the origin series. now the media brings up something that was months ago n doesn't change anything, if he agreed to terms on the contract extension this week then we should be worrying. sounds like nothings changed at all, just sayin.

Two things, we arent shedding heaps of players to sign no one, we've cleared the decks for a reason.

Secondly, I really don't think that Tinkler would make such a claim in public without good reason, he just seems way too cautious for that.

Honestly, he signed the contract thinking Bennett would be there, its a bullshit contract as it has the Bennett clause in it.

I'm not too concerned. It seems as if he resigned out of wanting to suckle at Wayne's teet some more rather than wanting to stay with the Dragons.

Why would Boyd have a clause to follow Bennett if he never intended to use it?

Wayne Bennett is coaching Newcastle. He could ask Sean Rudder to come back, play him at fullback and turn him into a star. Doesn't matter who we let go, who we get and who we don't get. Wayne Bennett is coaching this team for four years. This is the best signing we will ever get. Ever.

Totally agree. This is just the start. Bennett will make some big signings in the next few seasons and more importantly make our top juniors very solid players and potentially rep players.
