Frank Farina tells NRL, AFL told to grow up over Cup bid

FORMER Socceroos coach Frank Farina has told the NRL and AFL to grow up and accept Australia's World Cup bid is bigger than them.
Farina says rival codes attempting to derail Australia's bid to host the tournament in 2018 or 2022 should realise their place in the sporting world. "The fear of the unknown is the biggest thing for these other sports - they would never have seen an event like this in their lives," Farina said.
"It's different when you talk about rugby union or rugby league World Cups. They pale into insignificance when you talk about this event.
"I keep hearing the true World Cup being referred to as the second biggest sporting event in the world behind the Olympics.
"That's wrong - it's the biggest sporting event in the world."
Farina was confident that support from the federal and state governments for Australia's World Cup bid would overrule any attempts to sabotage the event by the likes of AFL boss Andrew Demetriou or his NRL counterpart David Gallop.
Gallop will today meet with Football Federation Australia CEO Ben Buckley, who has been forced into damage control this week after bid objections raised by rival codes.
"The arguments from the NRL and the AFL shouldn't be an issue because the FFA have the governments on their side," Farina said.
With the successful bidders for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups to be announced in December next year, Farina said there was more than enough time for NRL, AFL and rugby union officials to make alternative plans.

Blow it out your arse Frank you wanker.

Soccer is a minnow sport here in Australia and expecting the 2 biggest professional codes to just bend over because the FFA says so smacks of undeserved arrogance.

True that Joker. I got no problems with them bidding for it and it would be great to get it, but they have no right to run roughshod.

If they think Chairman Rudd will support them unequivocally when there is a voter backlash from AFL & NRL heartland (ie - AUSTRALIA), then Frank is sadly mistaken. Besides, any legislation the Govt tries to dictate to us wioth would be flawed, just like everything else they are doing.

The World Cup is novelty value for a lot of people. League & AFL are the ticking heart of Australian Sport. That won't change, regardless of all the bells and whistles.

Comments like that are hardly going to endear the majority to supporting the bid. Maybe he was drunk.

Well, it seems that it was that kind of thinking and acting that pissed off the other codes into inaction... Allthough the AFL is the one who is making problems - haven't heard anything official and negative from the NRL...

Let's face it, we find Farina's arrogance offending but the bottom line is, he's right.

Our game and the AFL might not know it but complaining like they have - no matter how justifiable, hasn't damaged the bid. It's strengthened it.

The FIFA have been on an aggressive campaign to kill off rival codes, no different to what the AFL have been trying to do here, which is why we have seen some WC tournaments outside their traditional areas like the USA, Japan and Korea and now South Africa.

Demetriou's rants have given FIFA more cause to look more closely at our bid.

RL should get onboard and work with the FFA. Hopefully we'll get some good stadia out of it if and when the show is over.

Was this the same guy that was sacked as coach of Brisbane Roar for drink driving? Perhaps he is the one that should grow up.

I am a suppoerter of hosting the Soccer World Cup - but what Farina about is nonsense... what 'resistence'? The bottom line is that the NRL season will be severley affected and whether he likes it or not other codes need to be consulted and compensated. End of.

Yes. Frank is right. I think he is talking more about the AFL than anyone. Problem is, when we speak we tend to lump things into 2 groups - to make conversation potentially easier...the "us" and "them" group.

Of course, some of you guys are too stupid to realise this just now, but one day you will.

And look, you will get dairy farmers and potentially a western sydney stadium, or even an upgraded buble stadium in melbourne. Olympic stadium upgrade and canberra.

I personally love soccer, and I am so glad they want to bring the big show to the country. And everyone can help them out to get them the stadia they need - please - because on so many levels we are all going to benefit from this.

Its not soccer's fault most of our clubs are up sh*t creek - but even many of footballs australian clubs could not cope with a few month break in the middle of their season.

I expect compensation, and believe no rational bid will be without it....obviously in the order of tens of millions. And obviously right now is the time to kick up a stink about it, which frank and others have not taken into account. We need to get them to see our side of the story now or they never will. Hence our reactions.

And hey, lets bring on the world cup...every man women and child, whether they like sport or football or not IS going to benefit. For years to come. Football can have its cake and we can eat it too. Obviously they get a big slice....

Gallop should canter over and stick his head fair up to his neck into the trough. Schedules and compo can be negotiated but we want up-graded grounds et al.

The football world cup provides a lifetime of benefits to us and all we have to endure is a couple of months disruption.....

Franks right. Lets get on with it.
