Sydney is the most lucrative market, but it's not head and shoulders bigger than Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth. It's definitely not in the same league as Tokyo or London. The Broncos wouldn't be the largest and most lucrative rugby league club in the world by such a ridiculously large margin if Sydney was anywhere as rich and prestigious as Pippen94 is making out. It’s not my problem you don’t know how to make comparisons or understand context.
Is Sydney the most lucrative region in the country in the same way as Buenos Aires and Tokyo are in those countries? Yes/no?
If Sydney is the most lucrative region in the country, it would be only slightly ahead of say Melbourne, whilst there are also lucrative markets in Brisbane and Perth. This wouldn’t warrant under normal circumstances having more than half of the teams in a competition wherein you don’t have such a corporate monopoly as Tokyo or Buenos Aires.
Also in those examples, you don’t have the amount of competition between sports. For example soccer would get the majority of the corporate spend, much more than say League in Sydney or Brisbane. Again this doesn’t help your argument. League has to compete with a multitude of other sports which means they are competing for that corporate dollar
Lastly, putting in another Sydney team when half the teams are surviving mainly because of the grant they receive would be beyond idiotic. Putting in another NSW team would be the same.
I don't doubt that Sydney should have more clubs than any other city. I question the lunacy of having nine teams in Sydney when all metrics prove it cannot support them. Six or seven is something that might be sustainable.
I question the lunacy of PVL wanting another three grounds to be upgraded when most Sydney clubs don't have a large enough fanbase to make use of them because they represent small regions. I hate to say it, but PVL is making us look like ungrateful brats and it's turning the public against our game.
If PVL cares about the game he'll lobby Albanese to build a new stadium for Canberra and add a grandstand to the eastern terrace of Wollongong Stadium. Then he'll negotiate with McGowan to upgrade Perth Oval in exchange for the Pirates getting the 18th licence.
