The Game Future NRL Stadiums part II

Sydney is the most lucrative market, but it's not head and shoulders bigger than Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth. It's definitely not in the same league as Tokyo or London. The Broncos wouldn't be the largest and most lucrative rugby league club in the world by such a ridiculously large margin if Sydney was anywhere as rich and prestigious as Pippen94 is making out.

I don't doubt that Sydney should have more clubs than any other city. I question the lunacy of having nine teams in Sydney when all metrics prove it cannot support them. Six or seven is something that might be sustainable.

I question the lunacy of PVL wanting another three grounds to be upgraded when most Sydney clubs don't have a large enough fanbase to make use of them because they represent small regions. I hate to say it, but PVL is making us look like ungrateful brats and it's turning the public against our game.

If PVL cares about the game he'll lobby Albanese to build a new stadium for Canberra and add a grandstand to the eastern terrace of Wollongong Stadium. Then he'll negotiate with McGowan to upgrade Perth Oval in exchange for the Pirates getting the 18th licence.
Actually Melbourne is clearly the most lucrative sports market in Australia. The combined revenue of its 15 pro teams is more than 50% higher than the combined revenue of Sydney’s 15 teams.
Sydney’s population is 1% higher, but sponsorship dollars as well as revenue generated from larger crowds is much higher here. It is not even close.

I'm no Souths fan but the Roosters are acting like the absolute scum of the league at the moment over Allianz.

https://www.smh.com.au/sport/nrl/tu...ccess-to-allianz-stadium-20220827-p5bd6f.html

Seriously what is wrong with the NSW government they've just spend $800m on the new stadium and they're blocking someone who wants to use it...
I didn't read the SMG article, but the one written by Daily Mail says there's no opposition to South Sydney returning to the SFS as long as they're willing to absorb the costs.

"During an emergency meeting on Wednesday, South Sydney chief executive Blake Solly, club chief commercial officer Shannon Donato, and NSW Sports Minister Alister Henskens discussed where the club would play home games starting in 2023.

Henskens is open to the move, as long as the government does not have to foot the bill. If Souths can absorb the costs, they are likely to call the new SFS at Moore Park home. "

More corporates in Sydney though.

I was viewing it from a global marketing perspective. Sydney is Australia's most popular and well known city. If you're a major international company you'll want to have a base in Sydney.

But you're right. Melbourne shits all over everyone else when it comes to holding mega sporting events and supporting its clubs. Sydney doesn't have enough rugby league fans to support nine professional clubs in the world's largest domestic "rugby" competition.

The key take away from all this is the NSW Govt. Demolished and rebuilt the two best rectangular stadiums in the state, and then decided to not do the ones that actually needed to be demolished and rebuilt.

there should be a royal commission into why.
It really is quite amazing lol. Can’t complain about commbank, it’s a cracking stadium and should be the nrls main stadium in Sydney, but yeh allianz was a wasted opportunity, I suppose we can thank Vlandys for Accor not getting done. I’m glad the three suburban tart ups have fallen over, monumental waste of money it would have been.

Parra stadium was already a fantastic stadium, as was Allianz.

Accor is a shit stadium that should be the national stadium.

Corporate spend on sport is much higher in Melbourne. Compare the facilities and packages at MCG or Marvel to those at ACCOR or SCG (not sure about new SFS). The corporate spend on the AFL grand final alone would top the whole NRL season (excluding SOO). Look at the spend on sponsorship - Storm and Melbourne AFL clubs all have multiple national sponsors in the $millions. Some Sydney NRL clubs have local law firms or small business at their top tier sponsors.

No they weren't. They were f**king rubbish.
Do you really think it was acceptable to queue for 10 minutes for a piss or 20 minutes to get some food?
That's what the shite suburban grounds dish up, yet the old Parra and Allianz weren't any better.

Easy fixes.

In what way? Some of those suburban grounds should only be used on certain occassions. Shark Park or Brookvale Oval - they can use them against non Sydney teams

I’m talking about his complaints about old Parra stadium and old Allianz.

Easy fixes.

Yeh they were easy fixes.
We re-built them both into modern rectangular stadiums.

With far more toilet facilities, far more and better food options to reduce queuing, better in and egress to the venue, far far better weather protection, and far better corporate facilities in both.
Anyway, enjoy whatever hovel of a ground you enjoy attending.

They are the ones that buy the advertisements and sponsorships
Then why are Sydney nrl clubs sponsorship revenues way below afls and some of the nrl clubs in other cities? Why is our fta deal significantly lower than afl if the advertising market is Sydney? Hmmm somethings not adding up in your argument.

Sydney's clubs don't command a great deal of money from sponsorship deals. Building new stadia won't change that because there's just not enough die-hard fans in Sydney to split between nine teams.
Disagree, company execs like to wine and dine themselves and customers in opulence, new stadiums with state of the art corporate facilities are a much easier sell than the hovels they are replacing, stadiums should help the Sydney clubs who use the new opportunities lift their game in corporate sales areas.
