This part sums up the folly of Sydney RL fans saying their nine small NRL clubs are equal to to Melbourne's eight AwFuL clubs.
Livingstone compared RSL Tasmania’s decision to quit pokies with the situation in the AFL, where several football clubs have removed machines years ago while others rely on them for millions of dollars in revenue.
“There are precedent for this with football clubs in Victoria, including the Hawthorn, Collingwood, Geelong and Melbourne – they’ve all got out of pokies, as they don’t see it as compatible with their priorities and goals as family-oriented organisations,” he said.
A viable football club doesn't need to rely on anti-social practices such as gambling.
Three of Melbourne's eight AwFuL clubs generate enough revenue from football operations to remove gaming machines from their licenced venues.
Broncos and Cowboys earn enough from football operations to not need revenue from gaming machines, but probably feel the need to use them after the NSWRL clubs used this revenue stream to kill the BRL.
On p8 of Cowboys Leagues 2021 annual report it says the club has reduced the amount of gaming machines in its venue:
The 2021 year marked the Cowboys Leagues Club’s 20th full year of trading operations at the Flinders Street site. The club’s main source of income is gaming revenue which is driven by 237 poker machines. The club is currently approved to operate 298 poker machines and has acquired entitlements for 261. To adhere to Health Regulations and for the comfort of its patrons, the Club has reduced the number of machines on floor to 165.
