That is also overlooking the one events Sydney has got because of Accor.

Big European soccer teams, concerts, GF and so on

I was thinking more along the lines of events that go for a couple of weeks to a month or so.

But yeah, we always have the annual Origin and GF. Big European soccer teams may return next year. While with concerts, Taylor Swift has apparently sold out in four consecutive nights at Accor.

Perth is definitely missing out on big events due to their lack of decent infrastructure.
No we arent. There are very few events that demand a stadium be rectangular, Optus has hosted stacks of events since being built and more have just been announced. Even if we built a new rectangular stadium it would only be 30k so big events would still be at optus. Missing a womens soccer WC 1/4 final isnt a big loss lol

Shame the manly development of a similar ilk got squashed by council. Seems councils are not very pro development that help their local club.

I don't think any council is happy to have any one entity to have that much power over them in their jurisdiction unless they can get something out of it or have some controlling say in its ongoing existence.

Councils are funny that way...they like kick backs and power just like Governments do.

Brisbane and Sydney have the best range of facilities for the widest range of events. They are able to ensure the best visitor experience.

Melbourne can to a lesser extent, but AAMI Park is still humble in comparison.

And if you are a visitor for an event like the record-setting FIFA Women's World Cup, why would you choose Perth or Adelaide? You're relegated to suburban-level facilities.

And all because the fumblers and cricket have aligned to kill off decent sized rectangle stadiums in afl dominated states.

Melbourne has both the MCG and Marvel - giving it both the highest capacity stadium in the country and the only full roofed big stadium. Unless you’re talking specifically for rectangular field sports they’ve easily got the best selection of stadiums in the country. And even then Marvel can be configured as a rectangle (you just have to force The AFL to allow it).

MCG and Docklands are great but they are huge ovals, which makes them sub par viewing for every sport in the world bar Cricket. Even in rectangular mode Docklands doesn't compare to Suncorp/SFS/Accor. Cricket ovals are completely useless for most events. It's a great shame Melbourne, Perth and Adelaide let us down in that regard.

Until they grow up and join the rest of the world we will never be able to host a real World Cup.

soccer world cups are the only events that demand a stadium be rectangular. Perth isnt missing out on anything else.
And as they come along as often as a Sharks premiership I dont think spending a lot of money just to host a 1/4 final of womens soccer is a good use of $400mill of tax payers money!

Perth doesnt need a 50k rectangular stadium and will never get one. Optus is perfectly fine as a state of the art stadium for any event that needs more than a 20k capacity. As can be seen by all the sold out events it has had.

Whoever said it would only be used for that?

They are the only ones who demand it. Every other sport, concert etc is more than happy to use our existing state of the art 60k stadium. So should we build a 40k plus stadium just in case one day Australia hosts the soccer world cup? I dont think so! We'll just have to learn to live with missing out on a womens soccer 1/4 final lol.

Thats not to say a 30k stadium at Burswood wouldn't be a nice thing to have, hard to justify though when the current HBF Park tenants struggle to attract 5 figure crowds in a 20,500 capacity stadium and theres no NRL club which is the only sport capable of demanding more than HBF park currently offers.

As much as rugby union is struggling, Wallabies tests against top class opponents (NZ, South Africa, England, Ireland, France) are still pretty much bankable near sellouts in the biggest available stadiums in Sydney, Brisbane and Perth , and would pull 50k+ in Melbourne too.

As sht as their domestic scene is (and their Int performances) people like to get behind their nation. Union still gets bg crowds for big international match ups. Events sell tickets. The Lions tour will sell out everywhere as its an event. Like womens soccer WC.

Perth offers a lacklustre viewing experience for spectators.

As shiny and new as Optus stadium is it’s just lipstick on a very fat pig. No wonder FIFA passed.

Amused by the views of one of it’s resident incels though.

Have you been?
It really doesn’t, been to 3 RL events there and enjoyed them all.
is it as good as a rectangular stadium? No,
is it better overall than Accor? Yes,
is it worth spending $1billion to build a 50k rectangular stadium in perth when it’s not needed? Absolutely not.

So much insecurity.
He’s afl infected. Hes starting to advocate the afl line they sporting codes like ours should accept that all stadiums should be afl/cricket first and rugby/league/ soccer second. Showing his true colours hey? Also note the innate sexism in his post as well about women’s soccer.

Of course they passed on it. But what else would a 40k rectangular stadium be needed for? Even if there was one, Brisbane and Sydney would still get the finals due to having bigger stadiums.
