They just missed out on the biggest sporting event in Australia in 2023.

Deadset no hopers in this thread.
You think the Victorian govt is going to spend billions on a rectangular stadium to host a one event like the soccer World Cup

Hahahhaa sure buddy

A city like Melbourne who self-proclaims to be the sporting capital of Australia should have at least a minimum 50 000 capacity rectangular stadium.

While Brisbane and Sydney folk were supporting our glorious Tillies in stadiums, the eshays in Melbourne were pushing over barriers.

Sad hilarious really.

So any ideas on who would play there ?

Victory for a start. The above table is just for regular season games, not finals matches.

This finals matches are...

Then there is the Storm.
Then there is Rugby Union who have the largest ever crowd at Docklands for the Lions tour in 2005.
Then we haven't even touched on internationals like the current WWC, Socceroos games, visiting international football teams, Bledisloes, even RL internationals, and then rock concerts.

Melbourne's 30 000 capacity AAMI Park was always built too small, and that was because the AFL wouldn't allow a larger stadium. It was part of the contract the AFL had with the govt with Marvel Stadium.
FFS, it was Melbourne Victory who convinced the VIC govt to increase the capacity of the build. It was originally slated as a 20 000 seat stadium. RL and Football were actually lucky that it was increased to 30 000.

Victory average 10k
Storm just under 18k

wallabies or arlc with origin like using the mcg for the extra capacity. So 50k vs 110k it’s never happening

Great post. The small capacity at Aami is directly a consequence of the paranoia the fumblers have for any other code getting a foothold in Melbourne. It defies logic that a city the side of Melbourne does not have a 50000 capacity rectangle stadium. Same goes for Adelaide and Perth each of which have seriously poor rectangle stadia. They should have minimum 30000 state of the art rectangle stadia. Any body detect a pattern here? The Matildas and the World Cup have put this front and centre. We badly need the three codes to start working together to overcome this anomaly. The fumblers clearly are the common enemy.

Is Optus as bad to watch a game as stadium Australia is?
I’ve watched about 15 or 20 games of RL at SA - it is so bad that it’s actually a total negative. I would rather a sports fan kicking the tyres on the game never go there. If Optus is like that then forget about expansion over there.
We won’t be playing nrl games there, except maybe finals lol
as ovals go id say optus has some seats that are def better than Stadium Australia. The stands have a serious rake on them and between the 20m and back try line second and third level are the best imo.

HBF park is a really compact stadium and you’re right on top of the pitch in the east and end stands. Creates a great atmosphere

If a Western Stand is built that boosts capacity to 25k with good corporate facilities. It will be. It'll be a good size, so even lean years feel well attended. It'd be crazy to expect them to build a 40k+ stadium conditionally to get an NRL team when we have cronulla playing out of a 12k stadium.

Future expansions can be negotiated and built incrementally. If Perth is getting 25k every game, it'll be easy to push for northern and southern stands to be rebuilt.
They’ve just admitted a new club that is playing some games in a 10k uncovered stadium lol. Nrl has very low expectations.

It would be great if they could get the whole stadium sorted in time for a Perth team’s first game with new western & northern stands, a roof over the southern stand and potentially the corners filled in as well. A new Western stand as you say would be a pass mark and enough for a start but it’d be good to see the NRL push for the whole lot from day one.
The south stand was designed to take a roof and add in a further 3.5k seats in the corners when the west stand gets built.

it’ll be interesting to see what they do with north end given the soccer fans love of the shed. Maybe a stand with those fold up seating for sitting or standing terrace option.

So a one off game ina. Once in a 50 year event. What other sports events are they not getting due to size of aami? They have telstra and mcg for the very rare massive crowd events. You can’t justify spending $850mill of tax payers money for a once every few years sporting need.

it is a shame they haven’t been able to design an oval that can convert properly into a 40k rectangular stadium. Must be some engineer boffin who can find the solution!

And Storm fans who still get a great at atmosphere when only 15k in it.

you might like swathes of empty seats at at stadium but not many do.
