Speaking of Eden Park, this has probably been posted but not sure. Plans for Eden Park redevelopment, 60k with a roof and “club mode”.

This, mind you, is for a theoretical event we haven’t even bid on yet.

Not to mention FIFA rotates the events between confederations. And the next time Asia is due we’ll be up against places like Japan and South Korea because it’ll be three decades since they last hosted. And the Saudis are sportswashing like crazy.

Anyone think we can outbid the Saudis when it comes to how keen they are to splash money around to host sports events? They basically just bought the sport of Golf.
True. The Saudi's are absolutely f**ked - even going after women's tennis, like they give a shit.

It’s also worth noting that Marvel has retractable seats, turning into a 48,000 seat stadium with much better viewing for rectangular sports. The Victorian government just bows to the AFL who doesn’t like what it does to the turf on the wings.

Wouldn’t it be far easier to lobby the government to make them allow the use of the retractable seats for ‘event’ games as opposed to the pie in the sky stuff of building a 40,000 seat stadium that no Victorian tax payer in their right mind would see as a sound investment?

Not to mention if Australia & NZ bid they’d have to get and Asian partner or 2 on board. From our closest neighbours it’s probably more likely Indonesia, Malaysia, Phillipines and Singapore’s first choice would be to try and work something out amongst themselves.

With only 100 odd countries 64 is a ridiculous #of teams for a WC

It will be impossible to have 150 training facilities

You basically shutdown a country

Not even somewhere like the UK or Brazil can host a SWC anymore

That does seem an extreme number. Do you know where the 64 teams is coming from? It’s 48 in 2026 and beyond as far as I’m aware.

Canada and Mexico with the US taking the lion’s share of hosting duties in 2026 might be the model that we may have to adopt if we’re any chance of hosting. Australia, NZ and either Indonesia or Malaysia would be my guess.

It's only really about 10k that get the viewing experience enhanced though (from going there when it was it that mode).

The top deck at most football stadiums isn't great viewing, it's the elevation that gives you the better view. At least this moves the sideline seats in:

It's not perfect, but an improvement.

But here's another point - both the Wallabies, FFA and the NRL for origin were given the option of using these seats at games played at Docklands in the last decade. All turned down the opportunity. Why? Because it reduces the capacity of the ground from 53,000 to 48,000.

Yes, that's right, the NRL, FFA and ARU allowed the fans in the ground to have a significantly worse view so they could sell 5,000 more tickets.

So, riddle me this - if the NRL thought they could get 53,000 to a game would they play it at this magical whiz-bang new 40,000 seat stadium so the fans could get a great experience, or would they take the cash, say f**k you to the fans, and play it on an oval.

Optus has the ability to add in an extra 5000 seats but for both sell out origins they havent used it. Makes no sense.

Not to mention aren't the Vic Govt and or privates essentially "paying them" to play at these ovals?

It's the same as Marvel. The AFL doesn't want them used because it damages the turf on the wings.

Since cricket will still be able to be played there it is still just lipstick on a pig. Also it is in a sh*t location. They should be selling off the land and building the harbour stadium as has been proposed on numerous occasions. This is just a compromise that delivers a Sydney Olympic style stadium with more bells and whistles, but still just a lemon of a viewing experience for half of the spectators.

When you see what they can do with stadiums these days with slide in pitches and the amazing Tottenham one where the NFl astro pitch comes up from underneath it would be great to get some amazing architect to design a 70-80k oval that can properly convert into a 50k rectagular stadium at the push of a button. Would save Govts so much money in long run.
