The Game Future NRL Stadiums part II

They end a stadium that holds 25-30k. They are at virtual capacity now.
It is not the NRL team that deserves the stadium. It is the region that deserves it after decades of neglect. Parramatta and the Roosters have each had 2 stadiums built whilst Penrith has had one minor upgrade. Really equitable.
That’s the problem with the current mentality. Instead of seeing commbank as a stadium built for all western Sydney and alliance for all of central and eastern sydney you see them as for two specific clubs. Until that mentality changes Sydney will be stuck in its impasse of every club wanting a shiny new stadium.

The opinion of an AFL fan living 4000km away is irrellevant. Sydney is a different geographical beast to your beloved melbourne.

Allianz opened only a year ago and cost $828mill for a bells and whistles 42,500 stadium.

Penrith didnt need to be as good as commbank. Not sure how much paceway was going to cost to purchase be geez thats some inflation on the cost of Allianz!

Construction is out of control in this country. They are building this amazing 60k stadium and surrounding sports area in Hong Kong for $600mill Aus

State owned land, dirt cheap labour, everything you need to build a stadium being manufactured up the road in Guangdong.

It helped that Cows didn’t have a CommBank type stadium half an hour away plus the anti stadium sentiment hadn’t started yet.
Qld treat rugby league better

population densities mean half an hour away is a world away compared to Penrith

Gold Coast has two upgraded or new stadiums with one tenant

South’s to allianz

dogs to get a private stadium in Liverpool

leaves manly, gong, Campbelltown and Canberra to sort out

it’s not so bad

penrith will be more than half brand new and Newcastle will probably get funding now from the grand final staying in Sydney

If the Liverpool plan is serious surely the Tigers get on board as well. Need to play there full time from the start to get on top of this “another club’s home ground” stuff that happened with Commbank.

If the Dogs get Liverpool, then the Tigers will struggle to get any foothold at Campbelltown. Dogs could swallop up the south west.

Maybe Accor is the Tigers home ground long term. Leichhardt Oval and Magpies old home grounds, Pratten Park, Lidcombe Oval are not far away from Accor. Ashfield leagues and Concord COE are nearby too. Define themselves as an inner west club. Magpies only moved to Campbelltown in the late 80's.

As for Penrith, they should try to get a new western stand at the very minimum. Even that is underwhelming and perhaps the money could be better spent elsewhere like hospitals.

I thought regional centres have different perspective to distance, ‘country mile’ and all that? Anyway, my second point still stands. The pandemic and cost-of-living crisis contributing to the anti stadium sentiment didn’t exist when either of those stadiums were built. Like Moore Park and Parramatta, they got in early. Until either an economic recovery, a successful World Cup bid or politicians grow some, we’re not getting anything for a while, sadly.

I mean yeah.

No one's telling Brentford or Fulham to centralise to Wembley or equally dumb shit.
Brentford, Fulham, and most other major football teams in the UK, own their own stadiums.

Nobody would care if the Sydney sides owned and maintained their own stadiums.

The story by fans here of it taking 2 hours to get from Penrith to Manly is an eye opener. Not so easy or fair to say you can only play in 2 stadiums in this city.
Shared centralised stadia is pretty much standard practice for publicly owned stadiums these days. It’s more cost effective and commercially sound, and it’s cheaper and easier to build and maintain dedicated infrastructure around a single stadium than half a dozen or more.

2 hours of travel time between Penrith and Manly wouldn’t be a thing at all if they were using stadiums in a central part of the city that’s easy for everyone to get to. It’s one of the reasons it’s been such a successful planning strategy.

So you want every team in Sydney to play in 2 stadiums. Impossible.
The surfaces would not be able to cope with the number of games, and it would be logistically impossible to do the draw.

Where are shared centralised stadia pretty much standard outside of Australia?

Most anywhere where the taxpayer owns the facilities. Most cities in the US and Canada where the facilities have been built in the last 30ish years for example.
