A squabble over just 5000 seats is delaying the announcement of a brand new, state-of-the-art, world-class Allianz Stadium – although it is expected to finally be unveiled "in coming weeks".

It will be the biggest sporting infrastructure announcement in Sydney's history. Finally.

As my previous post, do up the suburban grounds. i read that Smith was at Madison sq gardens and love the 10. 20 thousand crowd atmosphere, especially as getting to the majors is a hassle, go local go atmosphere improve the hill with membrane roof/ terrace standing bring back the old feel when your on top of the action.

Assuming the journo's are on the ball and a new stadium at moore park is happening. I just cannot believe the government and NRL are making a strategic mistake as big as this. The facts are pretty clear, attendances are much greater on average at homebush and that is where the major events for rugby league, soccer and union have found their home in the last decade. It just seems a massive mistake to not rebuild (or re-configure) at homebush for a purpose built rectangular field with ARL, FFA and ARU input.

Whether or not they actually get it, its good to hear that the NRL knows what it wants and is fighting for it...

Did you miss the Rabbits turn out at the 'East Stadium' for a top 4 clash?

It's not official and no one will ever come out and say it's true but they relocated when the moved Home games to Homebush. The majority of their supporters are located around Olympic park now, not the SFS.

Having just been to Wembley made me realise just how poor ANZ is. We were in front bottom section and it started raining at HT and I didn't realise until walked out the ground it was raining. Shows you don't need a full roof if they get the stand covering and drip lines correct.

This is the most sensible proposal i have seen...

30k at parra
55k existing allianz with roof
80k rectangular ANZ with roof

East Stadium - Roosters, Rabbits, Saints, couple of big sharks games
Middle Stadium - Tigers, Dogs, couple of big manly games
West Stadium - Parra, Penrith

Split origin between ANZ and Allianz every year..

Problems all solved

We should accept that nrl crowds are never likely to top 25-30k avg and be planning stadiums accordingly. No one should be playing at ANZ.

The state government is considering buying out the owners of ANZ Stadium at Sydney Olympic Park, the Sports Minister confirmed on Wednesday.
Stuart Ayres told a budget estimates hearing that the state had received a heads of agreement between the venue's operators and the Sydney Cricket and Sports Ground Trust that would allow the lease to "come back to government".
"Whether it includes acquisition of the individual asset or acquisition of the business is subject to evaluation by government," Mr Ayres said.
The comments come ahead of an imminent announcement about how the state government plans to overhaul the running of Sydney's stadiums.

Mr Ayres also confirmed it had received an advisory report by former Liberal leader John Brogden and this was to be assessed by cabinet.
The Baird government promised to spend at least $600 million on stadium upgrades in Sydney, though it is yet to say how it will split the money between ANZ Stadium at Sydney Olympic Park, Allianz Stadium at Moore Park and Pirtek Stadium at Parramatta.

Fairfax Media has reported there are plans to upgrade or rebuild Allianz Statium to a capacity of about 60,000. The Roosters, Rabbitohs and Dragons would all be encouraged to play home games there.
As previously reported by Fairfax Media, the lease holders of ANZ Stadium, ANZ Bank and the Diversified Infrastructure Trust, unsuccessfully tried to sell the lease back to the government for $100 million two years ago. However, the value of that lease would fall as it gets closer to its 2031 expiry.

Premier Mike Baird said this week the government was "getting very close" to an announcement on stadium funding and was "very pleased with the progress".
"We want to be the best city in the world and, as part of that, you need sports facilities, you need cultural facilities," Mr Baird said. "Our facilities will provide that opportunity."
Under the terms of the original 1996 deal to build an Olympic stadium at Sydney Olympic Park at a cost of $100 million to government, ANZ's private operators would be owed millions in compensation if its rivals underwent significant upgrades.
This would be triggered by investment such as increasing the corporate area of Allianz Stadium by 30 per cent, or boosting the seating capacity of Pirtek Stadium at Parramatta to 35,000.
Alternatively, the state government could instead buy out the remaining 16 years of its lease.
"There is a heads of agreement between the Sydney Cricket and the Sports Ground Trust and the owners of that [ANZ Stadium] lease to allow for that lease to come back to government. That is being assessed by government at this stage," Mr Ayres said.
The minister cited an offer from the leaseholder and a desire to consolidate the management and operations of Sydney's stadiums under a single governance model as reasons why the government would consider buying the venue.
"Also we might want to consolidate the operation of the ANZ stadia into one of the other governing bodies—that is, Venues NSW or the Sydney [Cricket and] Sports Ground Trust—to provide greater efficiencies," Mr Ayres said.
"It's critically important that Sydney, and particularly NSW, stays competitive in the premium sports content market and we have the most efficient use of taxpayer funds."

i went to a Dr Who concert at Vector Arena (in Auckland) and half way through the Daleks came out and said they had taken over the city. Didn't realise until walked out afterwards that the daleks hadn't really taken over the city.

Agree. Could do worse than something like AAMI Park in Melbourne. Great design and perfect capacity wise for most week-to-week games.

In terms of the SFS, I've often thought the ideal - if developmentally challenging - solution for Sydney would be if the SFS were built in the lands just behind Central station. Would make the public transport access to the ground significantly more appealing for a lot of people, and it's something Sydney desperately needs - a world class stadium close to its worker and transportation sources.

Failing that, extending a rail line to go under Moore Park would be pretty handy too (but again, expensive and challenging).

Preach brother, preach. It's far from impossible to reclaim airspace south of central! Expensive, yes but given that it would become the hub of a whole urban renewal precinct, developer contributions could flow to the state government.

Probably in a perfect world

But why would the gov spend money on anz for 3 RL games a year ??

They need a major Tennant or 2

Just put in some smart black drop down curtains to hide 40k seats during dogs tigers games.

ANZ is the most profitable stadium for Sydney clubs to play at, why shouldn't teams be playing there?

Are you really that shallow minded about seeing empty seats?

It'll be interesting to see what the new light rail line will do for crowds at the SFS. It'll go from the CBD through Moore Park and onto Randwick.

So it's now looking like a 50k capacity for the Moore Park Stadium and 30k for Parramatta. With the rest going to an ANZ upgrade.

I hope not. Under that plan, construction on an ANZ upgrade won't even start until the end of 2022.
