NRL boss Todd Greenberg to pull Grand Final from NSW if government backflips on stadium promise

EXCLUSIVE, Anna Caldwell, The Daily Telegraph
in an hour

NRL boss Todd Greenberg has threatened to pull the NRL grand final out of NSW unless the state government stays the course on its $2 billion promise to build two new stadiums.

As the government comes under sustained political pressure on the commitment to rebuild ANZ and Allianz stadiums, Mr Greenberg said any variation would send marquee matches to Queensland and Victoria.

He said his commitment to NSW was “contingent on the stadiums program being delivered”.

“That means a new stadium at Homebush Bay and a new stadium at Moore Park.”

Labor is pushing for the money to be redirected to health and education. Leader Luke Foley has long opposed a rebuild at Moore Park and is not committing to plans to rebuild ANZ saying all options were “on the table”.

Mr Greenberg said other states — particularly Queensland and Victoria — had been lobbying to host big matches.

“Without the stadium agreement, we would have to do the best thing by the game and take matches interstate,” he said. “That would ensure our game was showcased in the best possible venues — and that our players and fans are able to experience world class facilities.

“We would need to do the best thing for the game and that means generating more revenue from the other states which are willing to pay to host (them).”

The NRL grand final is worth about $50 million to the NSW economy. The Daily Telegraph revealed last month Queensland had made a $10 million offer to the NRL to take the match, which was being considered. But NSW trumped Queensland, securing 25 years of grand finals by signing the stadiums deal.

But it was a multi purpose stadium first. It was not built for us. It was not built for rectangular sports.
They literally had to put slabs of grass OVER the running track for even US to play there. You can even see that in the pic you posted.
When NOT THE GOVERNMENT, but SAG went to reconfigure the stadium. They configured it for all possible codes because they deemed it best for business.
They removed the running track. In removing the running track, they figured out that you could play Cricket and AFL there, which happened to be at the time, The two biggest sports in Australia.
Its always been a multi purpose stadium.

Actually, if you go back thgrough the records, the original plan was that, post-olympics, ANZ was to be a rectangular stadium. That changed when the AFL threw a few million dollar at the NSW Government to persuade them to keep it as a multi-purpose that could be configured into an oval or a rectangle.

AFL didnt throw money at the NSW government, they threw it at SAG. Stadium Australia Group. That group also tried to get the NSW government to extent the lease by offering to pay most of the new redevelopment costs. Which didnt work.
It still doesnt change the fact it was built for the olympics as a multi purpose, and before it could become a rectangular, it stayed a multi purpose stadium. Im not arguing that it shouldnt have been changed to a rectangular stadium. WE ALL KNOW IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN. But that COMPANY (not government) made that decision cause of the money thrown by AFL & Cricket.
The NSW goverment literally had to buy back the stadiums lease to rebuild the thing again because SAG didnt want to invest any more money into the thing and make it rectangular.
We all know ANZ needs to become rectangular.
The problem is that this government, NOT A COMPANY, has f**ked over ANZ stadium once again by another entity. Not AFL this time, but the SCG trust.
Which because its a public funds has become a tactical blunder and the plans in doubt.

the first AFL game was played there in 2002

before that it could only be used by sports which used a rectangular field

hardly what i would call multi purpose

it has to be an oval shaped for Olympic sports you gronk

that doesn't make it a multi purpose stadium

when was the last time you ever heard anyone call the MCG or SCG multi purpose stadiums?

It might be a good thing if NSW f##ks it up and doesn't do ANZ, then their contract with the NRL would be null and void and if the NRL has any sense about them they'd use it as a opportunity to show everybody not to screw around with them and sell the GF to the highest bidder for the next 25 years.

The NRL has desperately needed to show a lot of people for a long time that they wont just bend over and take it from them, but they haven't had the balls to do it, this might just end up being the time when they have no choice but to stand up and make NSWgov pay for screwing them around and send a warning to everybody else that attempts to do the same from now on.

So even if we don't get ANZ rebuilt we'd still get a win of sorts cause the NRL would be forced to flex their muscles and make the NSWgov pay for f##king them around, and that'd be a very good thing for the sport in this country especially if it lead to them telling a few other people to either tow the line or get f##ked as well.

I take your point but that’s a consolation at best.

Much better result to get the stadium we need, in the biggest rugby league city on earth.

It literally does. It was built for multiple sports. It was a multi purpose stadium.
Your picture literally has grass over the run tracks. It wasnt even built for rectangular sports.
It had to be oval for the olympics, so when AFL & Cricket came in and threw money at SAG, Why not keep it oval shaped so we can get more money. It f**ked League, Union & Soccer royally.
But it was always a multi purpose stadium. The fact that you decided to try and fail to pick apart the fact it was always a multi purpose stadium while SAG had the lease. Its an odd hill to die on.

I take your point but that’s a consolation at best.

To be honest NO NRL stadiums in Sydney need upgrading at all the only venue in the NRL I can think of which could be upgraded is North QLD! No point when most Sydney clubs are playing in front of less than half full stadiums!

To be honest, you’re wrong.

This isn’t just about the NRL either, ANZ has a multitude of events.

And Allianz Stadium is the only venue in NSW & QLD that has 3 permanent tenants.

And Townsville is getting a new stadium FFS, shows how little understanding you bring to this.

Why demolish the Olympic Stadium when its full its an awesome place to watch a game, sure it’s not as good as a rectangular stadium and you are a bit further away from the action, if you are going to spend money why not spend it on surbuban grounds like Kograh, Shark Park, Brookie, Leichhardt

Its not an awesome place. I have been to multiple american stadiums of similar size and they all shit on that joke of a place. The ends are 20m from the dead ball line FFS. 30m from the goals if a soccer game is being played.

Good idea, knock all the shitholes down and put bunnings there instead.

I stand corrected. My memory of all those years ago has obviously gotten a bit rusty :)
