Maybe not such a bad thing...

The NRL will probably get a taste for moving the GF (and i think it will be great for the comp). The NSW Gov will be desperate to get it back, but will probably be in for a much less generous deal.

I dont really care about SFS (the proposal is over-kill to please the trust. a 30k joint would be fine). But the ARLC should stand firm on "No GFs until ANZ is redone"

100% agree

If the rebuild goes ahead, how piss poor will the GF be at the SCG. Watching aerial views of the ground for the test match it’s going to be a shit experience and they’ll be paying a premium to make up for the smaller attendance.
Greenberg and the commission have really sold out RL fans.

I'm in my mid-40s and have seen plenty of rugby league at the SCG. Hell I was there on the hill for the last Grand Final played there on a stinking hot day when Manly put the cleanmers through Canberra. It is a terrrible ground to watch league at. You are seeminly miles away from the ground, and worse just about no seating at the ground will put you at either a 90 degree or 180- degree to the playing field. You wind up on weird angles (e.g. 35 degrees to 70 degrees) to the field, which makes it look bizzarre to say the least.

I'm gonna have to put up with it for my team when the SFS is torn down, as I can predict my club will play most of its games there durin g the rebuiold, but it is a crap ground for league/union/soccer to be viewed at.

What about as a compromise for ANZ, rip the ends up and bring them 30m in towards the field of play with 2 big double storied stands that have diagonal outer areas to meet up with the existing E and W stands? Also put a row of corporate boxes/suites inbetween the lower and upper deck. These stands don’t need to be anywhere near the height of the current E and W stands but it would give the whole stadium an ‘Allianz on steriods’ look and still be a decent overalll result for the game. Surely the general public will get on board with that as a compromise, anyone who has been there and sat in those areas knows its completley f**king horrendous a view and wouldn’t cost anymore than $200-$250mil to achieve this compromise.

I was lucky enough to get tickets for the Millenium room off a mate for the 2015 GF and the pre-match function was great and the seats that accompanied the tickets were also great (halfway up the E side right on halfway). I also sat 3/4 up the Eastern for the 2017 GF and whilst the view wasnt the greatest, it was somewhat acceptable. I sat in the northern and southern ends for the 2002 and 2012 GF’s and I may as well stayed at home and watch the f**king thing on TV. Woeful experience and I honestly think that if you rebuilt those ends it would still be a huge win for the game.

Allianz I don’t know of any cheap solution to the issues it has.

Toddles has to start playing hardball here with ANZ though. Either full development or the partial development with the ends or else agreement for the GF’s in NSW is over.

I just can’t get over how everywhere else in Oz is somewhat proud of their cities stadiums and see the benefits it brings but sydneyites/regional NSWers blow up deluxe at clearly inadequate facilities that are falling behind the rest of the country. Im no Sydney hater either as I have spent 10years of my life down there and love the place to bits but I just shake my head sometimes at some of the comments I read in the papers about the stadium situation.

How many times in the past 5 years has Allianz been even nearly full?

Parra 30k cost $300m. SFS 45k cost $750m

These costs will blow out but a like for like isn't needed an upgraded ANZ won't lose any tennants. Build it smaller and save costs that way

Just what is needed Fairfax letting rugby league commentary being run by a yawnion loving reporter, whose only positive comment on rugby league was that they supported Same Sex Marriage which is in line with his personal relationship

When they give oxygen to Peter Fitzknobhead and Andrew Webster, shows how far that media source has fallen.

With all of the politics going on around this issue, is it possible that the RU and AFL types would be happy and are working to have the NRLGF removed from Sydney as a permanent fixture? I wouldn't put it past them. It would be great for the other codes and let's be honest would mean that our game would have disconnected itself from Sydney a little which is not a good thing IMO.

A mate of mine gave me two tickets for the 1987 Grand Final because he had to go over seas when the Grand final was on, once Canberra cleaned us up in the final I sold the tickets to a Manly supporter at work. The SCG is shocking to watch rugby league, even though I was a lot younger I couldn't work out why for the 1977 season the Roosters decided to play at the SCG instead of the Sports Ground, thank goodness it only lasted for that season. The only spot that I found was reasonable to view the game at the SCG was the Noble Stand, even though you were behind the in goal you could see the whole sweep of the ground without the shocking angles you experience else where in the ground.

Those 100m of advertising do not suit oval grounds. They block the sideline views

Melbourne stadiums set for major upgrades in Andrews Government cash splash

Tom Minear, National Political Reporter, Herald Sun
an hour ago

EXCLUSIVE: MELBOURNE’S stadiums are set for major upgrades likely to be worth hundreds of millions of dollars, in an election-year cash splash by the Andrews Government.

The Herald Sun can reveal the government is in the final stages of sealing a plan to future-proof the city’s stadiums, with a source confirming “exciting announcements” will be made this year.

The AFL is believed to be confident of a $300 million overhaul of Etihad Stadium — including a waterside stadium gateway, events centre and parkland.

But the government is taking a cautious approach to handing over public money to the league, which does not pay any tax, and is keen to avoid the backlash seen in NSW over the government’s $2 billion move to knock down and rebuild two stadiums.

And it is keen to ensure any new stadium spending has broader economic and community benefits.

The AFL, which bought Etihad Stadium for $200 million last year, is offering to make it available for more concerts, events and conferences.

Acting Sports Minister Philip Dalidakis told the Herald Sun: “We know that we need to be continually improving our stadiums if we are to remain as Australia’s sporting capital and keep competing with the great sporting cities of the world.”

The growing popularity of AFLW is a key factor in the plan, with the government considering proposals to expand suburban grounds such as Richmond’s Punt Rd Oval and Carlton’s Ikon Park to cater for bigger crowds.

The stadium strategy was supposed to be released in the middle of last year, but the final decision was held off and it is now likely to form part of May’s election-year Budget.

The AFL had hoped for an announcement before Christmas, but is understood to be confident its Eithad pitch will be successful.

A radical $1 billion transformation of the MCG has also been on the cards for more than 18 months, but it is unclear whether that will form part of this year’s government investment.

The MCG wants to build new concourses over Brunton Ave, providing easy access for fans to Richmond station and Melbourne Park, which would also reduce bottlenecks identified as a security risk.

The Melbourne Cricket Club and the government agreed last month to develop a precinct masterplan for future construction works, to report in 2019, which could mean decisions on the city’s biggest stadium are delayed.

Treasurer Tim Pallas has been involved in a government taskforce — with Premier Daniel Andrews, Major Projects Minister Jacinta Allan, Planning Minister Richard Wynne and Sports Minister John Eren — which has been developing the stadiums policy since November 2016, meeting more than 45 stakeholders.

The Victorian government has invested heavily in Melbourne Park, as well as in stadiums in Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo, but city stadiums have had little financial support in the last decade while other states have spent big.

Victorians don't care their government will spend $300 million on a Stadium that they don't even own

It's unbelievable, it's literally a $300m taxpayer funded handout to a private organisation to wholly profit from. If the AFL can't afford to maintain the stadium they shouldn't have bought it.

How is it growing in popularity when there has only been one season of 6 or so games?
