Brisbane boutique stadium push gathers steam
Brisbane Roar coach John Aloisi has welcomed a push for a new boutique stadium in the city, which could form part of Australia's bid to host the 2023 Women's World Cup.
And Queensland's Commonwealth Games minister Kate Jones says there is a clear economic case for investment in sporting infrastructure.
Roar managing director David Pourre has seized on FFA's bid as an opportunity to lobby for an alternative rectangular venue to compliment Suncorp Stadium, where they currently play home games.
A-League chiefs are encouraging the Roar to find another ground with the 52,500-seat Suncorp oversized for many of their fixtures but there is nowhere else in Brisbane up to standard for professional sport.
Aloisi said a more intimate venue would be a boon for the code and city.
"We've seen down in Melbourne what AAMI Park has done for Victory and City and it's great to have those boutique stadiums ... you get a good crowd in and the atmosphere can be second to none," he said.
The two obvious options are an upgrade of Ballymore Stadium or a rebuild of Perry Park.
It's understood FFA had already been in discussion with the Queensland Rugby Union over redevelopment options at Ballymore, where the Roar currently train and A-League expansion hopefuls Brisbane City intend to play their games.
The QRU has been seeking a solution to Ballymore, which seats 18,000 but is in a state of disrepair, for more than a decade.
"I'm sure if they've got the money they can fix anything," Aloisi said.
A new venue may actually prove to be a necessity if Brisbane is to be involved in hosting a Women's World Cup.
The Brisbane Broncos, Queensland Reds and State of Origin are all usually booked at Suncorp in June, when the tournament would be held and there is nowhere else suitable to stage those matches.
There are also doubts over Suncorp's capacity to host NRL or A-League expansion sides with the stadium's event calendar nearly full.
Any new stadium would require state or federal funding.
"I think that's a question that the sports minister has a view on but we know that investing in sporting infrastructure does drive investment and economic activity," Ms Jones told AAP.
