The Game Future NRL Stadiums part II

And I'd bet my right nut that if people could catch a train to Central, or any other ground, and have a couple of minutes walk to the stadium, they would do it. Just like Melbourne.
This city f**ked up it's infrastructure a century ago, and has never done anything to correct it.
The light rail in both the city and Parramatta will go a little way to correcting this, as will the Metro West from the City to Westmead via Olympic Park and Parramatta.

But, to correct this cities transport problems, we'll need to see a combined CityRail/Metro system like this.

Most of these future lines are in the transport strategy, but the complete system is 30 or more years away. We have to start somewhere I suppose, to right the wrongs of the pathetic infrastructure investment in the past.
The proposed Metro lines are the deal breakers that could bring the city into line with other major world cities.

Yeah at least we’re starting to see some decent infrastructure built, irs been a long time in NSW since we’ve had this level of activity. Some of it hasn’t been smooth sailing but overall it’s a big step forward.

Hard to blame the folk of 100 years ago but you are right - the Infrastructure planning in Sydney hasn't been world-class - apart from the big f**k-off bridge we built. We are playing catch-up.

(Now I'll show my hand and declare I work in the Rail Industry - not for Govt though or the major rail companies)

Melbourne have a brilliant network layout and accessibility to their sporting grounds are so easy. But they have a raft of different issues I wont bore you with.

Anyway my real point is - unless we have the accessibility vastly improved to the SFS and ANZ Stadiums then money upgrading them is wasted as people will stay at home to watch. But also, if the stadium experience isn't up to scratch - then people will prefer to stay at home also.

Having been to Melbourne recently their rolling stock seemed much older and tired than Sydney.

Do you think there’s a chance we’ll see the metro west extended to the east? Possibly to the stadiums?

With ANZ part of venues NSW they can just stop all financial support to play at ANZ

Allianz just has to offer new dressing rooms and a gym and they will get a Tennant .

South's makes perfect sense

Plus a couple of big St George and tigers games

Makes sense for the Tigers & Dogs to got to the WSS. Maybe play a few big matches at ANZ.

I don’t see Souths going back to Allianz though, they seem very content with ANZ. They have members all over sydney. Tigers are talking about the WSS too.

Its not on the plan mate... but that's heavy rail. Not to say they wont have more light rail services and lines. I think that will be the case (you don't need to build huge infrastructure such as stations etc as you do with heavy rail).

I was at a Rail Industry Function two weeks ago, Transport Minister there plus others etc etc anyway..

I didnt get a pic of the layout they project but basically... in 50yrs..

Consider 3 x epicentre stations. Eastern Creek (yes..) - Parramatta - Central. There's basically a loop of rail networks around these with Parramatta basically in the centre. Ie a box of sorts with North West Corner is "North West of Windsor", Picton South West Corner. All in a big wagon wheel of spokes. Connecting each. Pre-planning to those far corners for future urban development.

But nothing on the northern peninsula, nor new heavy rail into the eastern suburbs.

Re Melbourne rail - yeah the fleets are old, combined with Signalling Technology over 90yrs old in some areas and Level Crossings. Fleet reliability and accidents have inherently been an issue (an incident once a week on crossings) but there is a big program of change.

Last year for example the entire metro network went down one afternoon because of a technical failure. Was absolute bedlam.

Couldn’t they put a special event station in between Parra square and Westmead stations and a footbridge from it to stadium?

The geography of the area wouldn't make that feasible or cost effective.

The Prince Alfred station is literally a 5 minute walk max to the ground - if you waddle.

I used to live in Parramatta and while I haven't been back in ages, that area you mention would be problematic to get the line / bridge in. Others here may have a more informed view.

Is it swampy or something? Shame,a station here would mean a few minutes stroll to the stadium

Bold plan to build new Sydney stadium suspended above Central station
4500.jpg

A new stadium for Sydney in the city centre and served by every major rail line, plus the chance to return Moore Park to parkland. It sounds like a utopian dream from an urban planner.

But architecture firm Bates Smart has produced just such a concept, which they have pitched to the NSW government: a 45,000-seat stadium over the platforms and adjacent rail yards at Central station instead of a new stadium at the site of the current Allianz stadium in Moore Park.

But despite the proposal’s merits it has been met with a tepid response from the New South Wales government.

A government spokesperson said any unsolicited proposal needed “to be evaluated under the appropriate guidelines”.

Bates Smart director Philip Vivian says the idea is entirely possible – a stadium is a relatively light structure, equivalent to a six-storey building. The firm has asked engineering company Arup about its concept and believes it is entirely feasible.

“It would involve building a podium over the stations – it’s a matter of creating land – then the cost of the stadium on top would be the same, he said.

The new stadium would be served directly by all of Sydney’s rail lines, buses and the light rail, while being close to dining precincts in Haymarket and Surry Hills.

“It would create a piece of the city that heals a big scar in its fabric,” Vivian said of the concept of building over the vast expanse of rail lines in Sydney’s Central station area.

I dare say the ‘tepid’ response would be for what would have to be a trillion dollar price tag.

That’s interesting, I thought there was a stop right outside the stadium?

Nope. The nearest stop from Parramatta Railway Station to catch the light rail will be on Macquarie Street. the light rail runs along Macquarie Street and then turns into Church Street. It runs right up Church Street until it gets to Factory Street at North Parramatta, where it turns into Factory Street heading westward.

Interesting.

This location has been mooted in this thread going back quite a few years.

But if you were going to do that I’d say it’d be best to make that the major stadium. 70k seat capacity.

Still it’s an improvement for elederly people needing to get to the ground, 15 min flat walk is fine for most everyone else.

Yep and the quicker they pull down Allianz now and start the rebuild the better.
So how would it grab you if Labor wins next year and decides to turn the site into parkland? Or highrise apartments? They would be well within their rights.

Should be taken to an election. And if it's unsafe it shouldn't be used next week.
