The Game Future NRL Stadiums part II

Actually many people have talked about $730m being over the top for the SFS. Lots of people agree it just needed another $350m stadium like WSS.

And some of your stuff isn’t slight prodding, it’s outright silly.

To bring the facilities up to standard at the SFS would have cost hundreds of millions. Major structural work would’ve been involved.

I didn't realise replacing seats and raising the height of handrails was major structural work.

You don't consider the proposed design to at least be a major improvement over the existing roof?

I'm of the opinion that it should be built like the WSS for the record.

It's better than before. But doesn't justify the cost.

Fair enough

I see I have another fan lol

I’d be surprised if stadiums built these days aren’t built with a 40-50year life span. Apart from capacity I can’t see too much evolution of stadiums in next few decades unless climate change kicks in even more and we end up needing fully enclosed stadiums in the future.

It’d be a great shame for fans if clubs choose to still play at anz when you’ve got the quality of wss for club games sitting there.

30 years hardly seems like a massive time-frame when considering the life of a stadium - but when you consider how much the World has changed since the 80's it's understandable

In the 80's far less consideration was given to disabled facilities, women's toilets, safety access, fire safety etc. In that respect 30 years is an age

I would like to think that a 40 to 50 year lifespan is far more achievable today as you say, but who knows what the future will bring

Most major leagues around the World have undergone a major rebuilding program in the last 20 years
Yes, their stadiums were older but by the time they started re-building them in the 90's they were all 30 years past the date they should have been pulled down.

Fingers crossed we get it right this time

I didn't realise replacing seats and raising the height of handrails was major structural work.

It wasn't handrails and seats

The SFS needed new access routes behind the stadium, under the seats
It needed a new sprinker system throughout
It needed new tunnels and passage ways under the stadium
I needed new toilet blocks and food stands etc

To revamp it, they needed to hoist the stadium in the air, replace all the parts behind the stands and then put the stands back down. That is not possible. A new stadium was required

That said, I am flummoxed as to why it costs $730 million for a stadium

The best new stadium I have been to in recent years cost less than a seventh of that
It's in the UK and in fact cost the owners nothing to build. Retail outlets covered the funding. The retail outlets also negotiated the construction costs rather than a Government. That way they didn't get shafted

Stadium MK was funded by Hilton Hotels, IKEA, Marks and Spencer, ASDA, KFC, McDonalds etc

The whole thing was built for $100 million and it has 30,000 seats, a hotel, multiple retail outlets, a cinema, restaurants etc all on site. The site is used 7 days a week and has constant revenue streams for the tenants who get their premises rent free for years as they funded the construction of the stadium

No Governments involved. No cost blowouts. No corporations set up to screw the sports club owners afterwards. The club OWNS the ground, they don't rent them.

I'm sure they put forward the most expensive costing option forward to get the desired outcome.

If this was owned by Westfield, they'd find a cheaper way.

Im guessing the cost and size is due to the trust members numbers? if 15,000 seats are taken by members then its no good building a 30k stadium. The Govt clearly doesn't have the political clout to disband the membership, I'm imagining these members are made up of the high and mighty of Sydney?? so reality is if you want 30k seats to sell to the public you need a 45k seat stadium. Its dumb but that seems to be a NSW govt thing. End of day Sydney will get two very nice rectangular stadiums so cant really complain. ANZ will still be sht for club games but its up to the fans to let their clubs know they do not want to watch their games being played there.

wo i did some deep dive digging on the sharks development original plans.
not much detail on the stadium at all, however all the plans had the burns stand being re done to have a full length open deck area in the middle of it that as part of the leagues club.

which is neat

if i figure out how to post the pic from a pdf ill post it.

Mate, it's modern Australia. Everyone takes the piss - consultants, contractors, overtime, variations - and for the cost, Aussie construction isn't efficient.

Do what the Poms do and drag a load of Irish blokes in. If they start taking the piss replace them with Polish blokes, if they take the piss in come the Rumanians.
