Except a presence for rugby league north of the harbour , some 800k people.

I live in the upper north shore. Most kids at my son's school have a team that they follow. Order of favourites are:
1. Bulldogs
2. Souths
3. Wests
4. Roosters
5. Manly

Don't really see what Manly are offering in terms of presence around here...

The only hope for Manly getting a co-tenant is ironically the CC Mariners , there has been some talk of them moving games to Sydney.

It might be hard for Manly fans to travel to the city , but that doesn't mean their ground would need to be on the beaches. Perhaps somewhere more central between the North Shore & the Beaches would make sense?

Obviously it's an extreme long shot either way , but expanding their territory into the north shore could help their survival long term.

It's exactly what we need, a call needs to be made on the Bears so the North Shore can be developed again. A great middle ground would be somewhere like Chatswood or St Ives, but it would never happen, nothing gets spent on infrastructure on the Northern Beaches. Abbott's election promise for his first ever campaign was that he'd get the Spit bridge widened and the road network improved. Fast forward over 20 years later and nothing has been done.

Fair point but I did say a presence.

Obviously there will still be fans but I can tell you from going to school at North Sydney having a team in the area helps a lot.

you can't have a team everywhere , but this is a huge area to leave vacant.

Let's say you started in Sydney from scratch , erase all the current teams from your memory , would you leave the North vacant?

I'd have

Sydney north
3 x Sydney west
Inner Sydney
Sydney south

That's such a cop out. How many EPL, CL and whatever they're calling the minor UEFA competition this week games start at 8pm or thereabouts Monday-Thursday in driving rain through winter in England. Still stacks of families go especially to the UEFA games as the tickets are normally cheaper. All this talk about kids turning in to pumpkins if they're not in bed by 6pm is an excuse for people who don't really want to go themselves.

Would those fans travel 30km though? Or atleast an hour in time wise? or save it til a game is the right time

Won't make hardly any difference if we persist with kick off times and days that make attending games extremely challenging for families.

This is the most sense you have made ever. That's the main issue here. I don't see enough casual fans coming in making up for the one's that are lost.

I would have 3 teams
1. City based team playing at SFS
2. Central team playing at Homebush
3. Western team playing at Parramatta

The government could ensure that they all play in modern stadiums

Interesting , but parra & Homebush are a stones throw away from each other.

Also based of sheer population 3 teams is selling the game short. Sydney fast approaching 5 million people.

Anyway as I say I think we'd be crazy to totally abandon the north of Sydney.

Looks like the telecrap have decided to push the suburban ground / ANZ agenda.
This is such a typical news limited survey...dripping with rothfield's bias and slimeyness.
That said...when news push an agenda (Dave smith) they usually win

On this occasion i beleive they are correct. Rugby league does not benefit from a new stadium at moore park. It would however benefit from investment in the spiritual homes of the clubs and making ANZ a rectangular ground that it always should have been

David Gallop warns NRL clubs that it’s too late to ‘second guess’ the $300m rebuild of Pirtek Stadium

TOM SMITHIESThe Daily Telegraph

FOOTBALL Federation Australia has fired a warning shot at NRL clubs who are questioning the government’s promise to fund a complete rebuild of Pirtek Stadium, as debate continues over which of Sydney’s stadiums should receive $1.6 billion in funding.

Reports in recent days suggested that a group of NRL clubs opposed to the rebuilding of Allianz Stadium had sought a $200 million pot to upgrade a series of suburban grounds, paid for by scrapping the $300 million rebuild of Pirtek.

The NRL itself is at loggerheads with a number of Sydney clubs, with the governing body backing plans to rebuild Allianz Stadium and play more rugby league games there.

In an unlikely alliance, both the refusenik league clubs and FFA have called for a full refurbishment of ANZ Stadium, rather than spend the bulk of the money on Allianz.

FFA is lobbying for ANZ Stadium to reconfigured into a rectangular shape, with Allianz just to be refurbished rather than rebuilt completely.

But whichever strategy is ultimately adopted by the government, Gallop rejected the idea of “second-guessing” its commitment to Pirtek which is due to be demolished in October.

A detailed design consultation is underway, with any lobbying to reappraise the stadium’s future seen as unlikely to succeed

“FFA is delighted that the Baird Government has confirmed funding of $300 million for a new Parramatta Stadium and that planning is underway,” Gallop said.

“We note the debate around the stadia strategy in the past few days, but FFA is banking on the Western Sydney Wanderers having a new home by 2019.

“The Wanderers have been the only club to consistently fill Pirtek Stadium to capacity and that incredible popularity and growth has produced the business case for government to build a 30,000-plus venue. It’s a fundamentally sound decision and there’s no basis for second-guessing.

“There’s nothing we’ve heard in the past few days that changes the government’s core commitment to have a network of three world-class rectangular stadia for Sydney, with a new stadium at Parramatta as the first project constructed.”

The Wanderers are still lobbying the government over the exact design of the stadium, seeking features such as a safe-standing section behind the goal for its Red and Black bloc supporters group.

“We have full faith in the commitments made to Western Sydney by the NSW Government on the redevelopment of Pirtek Stadium with the appropriate level of funding to provide a world class venue in the heart of Western Sydney,” said Wanderers CEO John Tsatsimas.

“We look forward to finalising the planning phase of the Pirtek Stadium redevelopment as the first step in the NSW Government’s stadium infrastructure strategy.

Still say:
New parra 35k stadium $300mill - Bulldogs, Wests, eels
New Moore park 35k stadium $300mill - roosters, Souths, dragons
New manly 20k $200mill
Cronulla significant upgrade 20k $150mill
Penrith new stadium 20k $200mill
ANZ reconfigure $450mill

Would set the game up in Sydney for next 40 years and give every club best chance of survival.

why do they always say the wanderers fill up pirtek stadium to capacity? Haven't the Eels crowds been higher the last few years?
