AFL and cricket could be beneficiaries of NRL infighting over stadia investment

So black mail Sydney by pulling the funding if we do not agree with Ayres idea.

Then use try and convince us that the AFL and Cricket will get the funding instead if we do not agree.

EAD Ayres you grub.

So the good old AFL may somehow benefit from all of this shit.

They've got their grubby hands in everything.

The Australian Rugby Union and the Waratahs have both come out in support of the NRL in backing a new Moore Park super stadium, though both want Allianz Stadium to remain operational while it is built.

ARU chief executive Bill Pulver and Waratahs chairman Roger Davis, have written to NSW Sport Minister Stuart Ayres to stress the need for the proposed 50,000 to 60,000-seat stadium.

?To confirm, we are supportive of the proposed stadia network solution and the objective to ensure that Sydney has the capacity to handle a range of events across ANZ, Allianz and Parramatta stadiums,? Pulver and David write in a letter to Ayres, a copy of which was obtained by The Australian.

The Waratahs supporter base is in the inner city/north shore area, so of course they would.

The time of todays articles relating to the spend on the SCG is no surprise. Ayers is a joke and should be in fron of ICAC along with his mates on the SCG board, this is all about the trust getting the valuable real estate the sfs currently sits on for commercial and residential development so they can line their pockets.

Typical NRL looking a gift horse in the mouth.

Why would the nrl and its clubs back something that is clearly of little benefit to it and you could say would only exacerbate stadium issues long term. What the clubs has proposed is gold and i hope the premier comes over the top of ayers to go in that direction. Baird aleeady indicated in late 2015 that the NRL's input was critical as it provides the bulk of the content and can guarantee premium events like origin and geand finals. Does ayers really think that his pet project is big enough to take events off ANZ,he is dreaming lol

I am a roosters supporter to the core but if this mess resolves in the SCG's favour or it doesnt and he pisses more money away on the SCG i won't set foot in moore park ever again.

SCG refurbishment will proceed if NRL clubs don’t agree to new stadium at Moore Park
April 8, 2016 12:00am
EXCLUSIVE Andrew ClennellThe Daily Telegraph

THE Sydney Cricket Ground will be redeveloped instead of a new stadium being built at Moore Park if the NRL does not agree to Sports Minister Stuart Ayres’ stadium plans.

State government sources have confirmed that an SCG refurbishment is the plan should NRL clubs not agree to a new 55,000-seat stadium at Moore Park — a slap in the face to rugby league and a win for cricket and AFL.

That would mean $300 *million for Parramatta Stadium and $300 million for the SCG from the government, while the rest of the $1.6 billion promised late last year for stadiums would go into the Rebuilding* NSW infrastructure fund.

The extraordinary threat comes after the AFL — which has an interest in an SCG *redevelopment — had recent meetings with Premier Mike Baird as Sydney rugby league clubs continue to oppose Mr Ayres’ new SFS plans.

“If the NRL and the clubs cannot sort themselves out, the government is considering doing the SCG upgrade above rectangular venues,” a senior government source said.

“People inside the government are envious of the *success of Adelaide Oval.”

The Daily Telegraph yesterday revealed Mr Ayres had warned the $1.6 billion stadium deal was in danger of collapse, with the government position that there are no options but to start looking at alternatives if the clubs continue to try to “dictate the spend”.

Rather than take the clubs’ option of turning ANZ Stadium at Homebush into a *rectangular stadium and refurbishing the SFS, Mr Ayres is prepared to junk the lot if he does not get his way with the new stadium — but will keep building the new Parramatta stadium and redevelop the SCG’s O’Reilly stand and complete the Brewongle Stand.

The NRL is expected to come back to the government in the next week with a position on the stadium issue after eight of the nine NRL clubs voted to oppose the new stadium. Mr Baird is expected to take control of the issue when he returns from Israel.

I reckon there is something dodgy going on

I think where the sfs is zoned mixed use or something , if the trust can claim a new area of the park for the new stadium

They can knock down the sfs and turn it into high rise appartments and mixed use commercial space

That being right on the main Rd into Paddington would be worth $100s of millions which the scg trust could probably pocket

#donttrustthetrust

No mate, it is not for apartments. They want to be able to build a multi-storey car park on the land where the SFS now stands.

The Statute Law Miscellaneous Provisions Act (no. 2) of 2015 authorises the SCG Trust to build a 6 storey building on the current site of the Gold Members car park. This building will then be leased to the ARU for 75 years to be their Development Centre. This was covered during debate when this bill was debated before the NSW Parliament - http://www.parliament.nsw.gov.au/prod/parlment/hansart.nsf/V3Key/LA20151118052?open&refNavID=HA8_1

It is just a land grab by the SCG Trust so they can annex the land under the control of the Centennial Park and Moore Park Trust. They control the land where Kippax Lake is, and the land where they propose to stick their "new" stadium.

MMM mentioned this morning that apparently the NRL have just switched camps and are now backing the clubs in supporting upgrades to Homebush and Allianz. Hope this is true, hats off to Greenberg if it is.

Jeez, it's a risk. I would honestly not be surprised if AFL comes away from this laughing. They have every other time.

This is what the NRL and the clubs have agreed to:

1. Continued progress on the work to replace Parramatta Stadium of up to 35,000.
2. The reconfiguration and major investment in ANZ Stadium with a $600M-$700M investment to transform the seating arrangements, reducing its capacity to 72,000, creating a seating bowl to surpass Suncorp Stadium and new and improved customer facilities and services. This is a permanent rectangle.
3. That the ANZ investment follow the Parramatta Stadium works as the second priority for the NSW government
4. A refurbishment of Allianz stadium of $450M to overhaul the spectator experience, including revamped corporate facilities, providing a capacity of up to 42,000 and a new multi-story car park to be used for matches and for week-day city commuters accessing light rail. This will ensure that the NRL Central and Rugby League Museum is retained on its current site
5. A pool of $200M of capital funds to support suburban field enhancements and High Performance Centre Development in consultation with the clubs.

I cannot see Option 5 happening, but then again, the way that grub Ayres talks, then the lot will be thrown into the SCG Trust for the benefit of the AFL.

Well depends on the outcome, if it ends up with better afl facilities and just a parra stadium out of it al, we didn't play the game very well.

I reckon a lot of this has come about due to the fiasco here where the WA govt started building before getting an iron clad agreement for afl clubs to play in the stadium. The clubs are now holding them over a barrel to sign the agreement because they know if they don't the govt is going to look very stupid with a billion $ empty stadium.

Nsw govt probably saw what is happening here and wanted the 65 game agreement before committing which is fair enough. Seems to me neither of the two options are that great for all the Sydney clubs really.

big hit!

the NRL would have wanted the Olympic Park option all along. It leases land and buildings off the Trust though, doesn't it? Can't appear to be going against the wishes of the landlord.

The clubs' proposal is what the NRL have wanted all along. And with the impression that it's come from the clubs, the NRL are now taking the stand that it is what it's constituents want and will support it.

The clubs plan is fantastic. The key carrot being $200 mil for the suburbs.
That could mean $40-60mil each for Cronulla, Brookvale, Campbeltown, Penrith, and Kogarah.

Can anyone seriously answer why Cronulla or Manly or Penrith should self-harm, give up real home games for the greater good without huge incentives to do so? Higher capacity and facilities twice a year which go mostly unfilled simply aren't worth it.

The proposal for the SCG isn't a huge benefit for the AFL anyway , it lifts the capacity by about 10%.

And it's going to be done anyway , Ayres is just threatening to move it up the order.

Worries me that $600-700m will be enough for ANZ , weren't there some earlier reports stating they need $800m?

Re point 5. It has potential to be a great thing for the clubs but only if they don't spread it too thin. Focus on one single improvement that can make a difference.
