As to the light rail, if you think it will be the panacea to the area's transport problems when their are big crowds, read today's media reports about why the inner west light rail can't run more services than it currently does to meet demand. I very much suspect similar issues will plague the eastern suburbs light rail too.

Fwiw the new light rail trains are twice the length, so they should be better than inner west line.

But tens of thousands at once will still be a problem.

Due to the location though, Moore Park is inherently less of an everyone in, everyone out all at once kind of site. There's things to do before and after and on the way. You have the people walking to and from the local bars, the city, down to central, etc. Give some people a reason to stick around and you can take some of the strain off the public transport and roads.

Yeah fair point.

As I say I'd prefer the major stadium in the inner city, as long as we get a quality rectangular ground out west. In the 40-50k range.

Sometimes the problem is democracy is that it aims to make the maximum amount of people mediumly happy instead of treading on a few toes to get the best result.

I don't think the final result of this stadium scenario will be anyone's idea of the best result for the city, but the one that manages to compromise its way through layers of politics to an acceptably mediocre middle ground.
A good compromise leaves everyone unhappy.

NSW premier has already backflipped on last weeks statement that they would spend what was needed and has told Greenberg they won't spend more then $900m on ANZ, meaning that the upper tier won't move. Seriously, this is embarrassing and it's changed repeatedly over the last 3 years, who would invest in NSW with any degree of certainty on government policy. She's afraid to sack the trust's lapdog Ayres. Watch NSW screw this up. Pathetic.

Gladys is the backflip Queen

I would be happy with ANZ becoming a proper rectangle design.,.

Not really that fussed about any changes to Allianz...

FFS.

I give up. This whole thing has been such a farce. I genuinely hoped we'd finally see at least one world class stadium in Sydney, it's now clear we're going to be screwed over again.

I just wish they'd make a clear statement either way. Just take a stance FFS.
They did, after years of political bs, last year they had a photo op with the leaders of the NRL, FFA, & ARU at ANZ and declared it would be a world class rectangular venue. Since that time Ayres has done his best to destabalise it, on the behest of his owners at the SCG Trust. Ayres should have been punted two years ago for f**king the whole thing up and now he's at it again.

Yeah but they never gave a firm cost commitment. That meant it was easy to change.

Thing is, if the article is correct, and she's not prepared to go over a total spend of $1.65b, then the SCG trust aren't getting what they want either. We'll have two compromised stadiums.

crazy you can't build a world class stadium for $900m though.

Would be a better outcome if they turned SFS into a superb world leading 60-65k stadium. Pulled down ANZ and built a decent 35k retractable roof stadium there for clubs. SFS to be Sydney's major sporting venue and sort out the transport and infrastructure around it. I agree getting out to ANZ is shthouse and its dead when you're there. Capital stadiums should be in the heart of the city.

Stadiums in middle of cities work well in medium to large cities .. works well in America with baseball in Baltimore , Cleveland , Detroit etc works well in Brisbane .. Perth Adelaide

But Sydney is a global city spread out over 100s of km .. East to west North to south

New York sports team play in the bronx and Brooklyn not in Manhattan

I don't think Wrigley Field is in downtown Chicago even San Fran 49ers have moved 45miles south of San Fran

For a stadium to represent all of Sydney home bush is the best geographical location..

It needs some pubs and restaurants etc agreed

Interesting. the Buffalo Bills are actually the only NFL team that play in New York, the NY Giants and NY Jets play in New Jersey.

If the Olympic stadium is not going to be fully rectangular then why even bother (which is what they want really) Athletics stadiums will always be poison for rugby codes/soccer.

That's true but Friday games are the ones that will be worrisome.

Modelling indicates that peak hour services will run at anywhere from 90-110% of capacity from day 1.
