I don’t know why the SCG Trust don’t harp on the fact the SFS was originally built with purely donated money and didn’t cost the taxpayer a f**king cent until some of the smaller upgrades were carried out. It was the primary RL ground for 11 seasons for f**ks sake. This fact seems to get lost on some.

Maybe someone needs to hit up there local Labor members about the alternate stadium option over Central which can also then ensure that the stadium is controlled by NSW Events rather than Moore Park trust. Given the costs are going to be similar to build. A stadium in that location would be perfect.

Plus then labor could sell that more green space is opening up. And a better use of amenties. Especially when Rugby L/U games and AFL games are on at the same time.

Mate, Labor don't want to fund either the SFS rebuild or Homebush, yet you think they can be persuaded to spend even more on a brand new stadium over Central?

As to the SCG Trust, all it will take is to change the Act to disband them, and place the land the trust manages under Events NSW. I dare say if the polls go the way they are, they'd have a good chance to be able to secure the numbers in both Houses of Parliament to secure passage of that. Problem is, too many in politics see the SCG Trust as a sinecure of power, so they may just sack the bulk of the current trustees and appoint new ones.

I hate to say it, but we lost the public debate over these stadiums. There’s no coming back from that.

The NRL would do better to refocus on a single large stadium in 10 years time & push for a 30k seat rebuild of Allianz. Why waste over $1billion on a compromised stadium at Olympic Park & an over the top stadium at Moore Park?

If?

You think there is a chance they won't? Is there anybody left in the state that the Berejiklian government hasn't alienated?

They still have a trump card. The years of labor mismanagement & corruption not long ago.

If the federal election goes first I think the current NSW govt can win, if not it will be very hard.

don’t the roosters, Warahtards and Shitney FC get significant compo for the period of the Allianz build? if the stadium gets partially knocked down and Labor win the election, they’ll be paying a fair bit from memory for each team so they’re gonna have to do something about or else these clubs will clean up in compo.

I'd still be very surprised if Labor wins. There is no logical reason for anyone to vote for them. They have zero policies except 'we'll cancel this and we'll cancel that' The majority of the NSW public is not that stupid.

I suspect the election will be close, but no matter how on the nose the Libs have been, Labor have a track record of being even worse.

Why focus on building a large stadium at all? We’ve got one. It could be better but we only play three or four games a year that need it.

Focus on building a stadium for the 22-26 Rabbitohs, Bulldogs and Tigers games at Olympic Park that don’t need a huge capacity and are actually damaged as an experience by being played in an over-sized three quarters empty cavern.

And focus on getting a centralised indoor stadium in Canberra for the 12 Raiders games that have to fight the cold and/or atmosphere sapping design of an open, old, isolated, converted athletics track.

And focus on sorting out the franchise and stadium mess in the North Shore/Northern Beaches/Central Coast corridor so that the game can stage 12 games at a venue that is widely accessible by mass transit, has facilities that actually encourage patronage and optimises the game’s presentation.

And focus on getting the next stage of the Perth rectangular stadium done so the venue is ready to showcase 12 games and maximise the profitability/viability/sustainability of a Perth franchise from day one when expansion/relocation finally comes.

Assuming Moore Park happens in some form, these are the game’s pressing stadium issues, not what we do for a large capacity venue to host three or four games each year. We can cope with compromises there because the big events sell themselves. It’s all the problems with staging ordinary week to week club games that are really hurting our ability to grow crowds and, by extension, grow our clubs.

Politics, especially in the age of the sound bite and social media, is the art of “what have you done for me lately?” The record of a current scandal plagued government will (T)rump the aging history of yesteryear every day of the week - irrespective of the logic of putting back in the lot who screwed us immediately prior to the current lot that screwed us.

Not to mention the rent/lease that Govt. charge to hire these things, often $100k+ per event

It's made out in the media that the construction of the stadium is a one off sunk cost.

Legal blow hits Labor's bid to stop stadium demolition

Matt O'Sullivan28 December 2018 — 12:00am

Labor's attempt to encourage councils to pursue legal action to halt the demolition of Allianz Stadium at Moore Park appears set to falter after the City of Sydney ruled it out due to the risk of significant costs and damages arising from a lawsuit.

The Opposition, which is campaigning strongly against the Berejiklian government's stadium plans, has released legal advice it sent to four councils from a senior planning lawyer who concluded that the consent for the demolition and rebuild of Allianz Stadium was invalid.

While the Labor and Greens-dominated Waverley and Randwick councils will consider next month if they have an appetite to take it further, the City of Sydney said its lawyers believed that proceedings against the state could leave it liable for substantial costs and damages.

"We cannot expose our ratepayers to that level of risk on a planning matter in which we have no authority," Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore said.

The legal advice to Labor from Tim Roberston, SC, was that the Planning Minister's consent to the stadium redevelopment on December 6 was in breach of the State Environmental Planning Policy for the Remediation of Land.

He also advised that requirements for the design, fitout and construction of the new stadium had not been complied with before consent was granted, while the public exhibition of the development fell short of a 30-day period for submissions.

Waverley's Labor mayor, John Wakefield, said the council would meet on January 7 to decide whether to launch legal action in the Land and Environment Court but he conceded it would be a "big leap" to do so and was likely to require the support of other councils.

"We will not do this lightly," he said.

While the council had yet to form a position, Cr Wakefield said a second opinion from its barrister had found two of the three main elements of the advice to Labor were significant.

Randwick Council also said it would consider the legal advice from Labor at its next meeting but Woollahra Council indicated it had no intention to take the matter further after declaring that it did not have a position on the stadium because it was not within its boundaries. The stadium is in the City of Sydney's local government area.

Earlier on Thursday, Labor leader Michael Daley said the legal advice showed there had been "egregious breaches" and major flaws in the planning consent for the stadium demolition and build.

But he said it was up to the councils to decide whether to launch legal action.
"The ball is in their court. [It is] a flawed consent, particularly in relation to important things like the treatment of hazardous materials," he said.

But a spokesman for Planning Minister Anthony Roberts accused Mr Daley of a "sad stunt", and said the criticism of design excellence standards had "no basis in fact" while noting that the mandatory period for consultation was 28 days and not 30.

"Design excellence formed a key part of the assessment. It was considered, and will continue to be refined by the design competition," he said.

He also rejected Labor's advice that the consent was in breach of planning policy as "fundamentally, categorically wrong". The consent was only for the demolition, not for construction of the new stadium, he said.

The Department of Planning said it had expressly considered possible contamination of the site, and consent was provided only for demolition of the existing stadium to the current ground level.

"The department’s assessment found that the risk of contamination on the site is low but that a more detailed site examination must be carried out before the new stadium can be approved," a spokesman said.

Labor has said it will not rebuild either the stadium at Moore Park or proceed with an $800 million upgrade to ANZ Stadium at Sydney Olympic Park if it wins government at the March state election, instead investing the money in schools and hospitals.

This makes Daley look incompetent.... I guess he couldn't even drive a car legally..

The only thing keeping the SFS rebuild moving forward is content for the SCG Memberships

If content was available at either WSS ANZ or SFS then a lot of the ANZ v SFS debat would go away

Eg a Venues NSW membership offer

For some reason this site won’t let me upload pics anymore, keeps on coming up with an error message. My mate sent a pic and he has five seats from the SFS sitting in his lounge room.
