The Game Future NRL Stadiums part II

Not many can sell more than 40K though, that is my point.

Not many can sell 40k either, but the ones that come to play stadium shows tend to go to ANZ.

The ones that can’t play stadium shows, either because their music doesn’t suit or can’t sell enough tickets go to whatever they’re calling the 20k venue at Olympic Park these days.

So the shows Allianz must attract need to fit into the 20-40k area.

Quality of the venue, proximity to the city.

I doubt a promoter cares much about proximity to the city, they’re only going to choose the venue if it’s the right size.

The venue is an improvement but it’s still a stadium, won’t have great acoustics.

The thing they should’ve done if they wanted more concerts there is put a roof on it.

That is what they needed to do, a smaller but state of the art fully roofed stadium so it was very different in scale and function to anz. 35k with a retractable roof would have been anpositive for the city and justified as offering something different.

Hopefully if labor get in they will disband the scg trust and put both stadiums under a smc.

Also as a concert venue close to the city so that the economic benefits of the concert spill out into bars and nightclubs.

The SCG is the right size but it’s difficult having concerts there in summer (which is peak concert season) due to the wicket block in the middle of the ground.
As a concert venue you probably dont want it too much bigger. You get to fit a few thousand more people into the pitch area anyway and if the stands are too high you can’t see the stage anyway. ANZ already does the huge concerts so again it would be better to have something more intimate.

Then the question is why hasn't Allianz hosted more concerts?

Probably the $’s don’t add up. Concert big stadium gigs don’t make much unless you are selling 65k plus tickets. Arenas at 20-25k will often offer a better profit margin than a stadium gig of 30-35k and are better venues for the artists. We used to see a lot of concerts at nib until the arena was built. Now it’s either 65k at optus or 15k at Perth arena. Nib with its 25-30k doesn’t get much anymore.

Same over here. They use either the 20k indoor at Homebush over a few nights or ANZ.

Without knowing what they are to hire. Metallica cheapest tickets are $188. Even if only 50k tickets are available to the public that is almost $10m there.

Chilli Peppers had 2 at Qudos arena. When you take out freebies and Trust Members tickets. That would of made more than 1 at Allianz.

I don't see that will change unless a concert promoter agreed to use it if built

A number of issues, a much more appropriate concert venue in the city of the Entertainment Centre, that no longer exists. The facilities of the stadium are not a selling point. Even saying that, I have attended a number of shows at the venue over the years.

The city is lacking a concert venue in the city.

In saying all of this, I am actually in favour of a rebuild in the 35-40k range for the site,

This is correct, Arenas are much better, the city no longer has a large Arena to host shows.

It’s a shit night out after the gig and the majority of the population don’t live there.
The lockout laws ruined the nightlife.
I think it is for the bands themselves. There does need to be a venue for concerts in the city, but in saying that 35-40k is probably enough for a stadium venue. It's that 10-40k size audience that is not covered for in the city. To be honest it was a mistake to not replace the Entertainment Centre.

The trust members don't get free concert tickets as part of their membership

When Todd was grandstanding and saying the SFS and ANZ need upgrading or the GF goes on the road, was there a timeframe to start the works?

Surely if Labor get in, there can be no GF at the SCG

Why would it need to be at the SCG? Labor has stated they won’t do the ANZ redevelopment. The deal is void if so.
