Wynnum Manly Seagulls Rugby League reveal plans for new state-of-the-art stadium home​

One of Queensland rugby league’s most historic clubs have revealed massive plans for a potential move away from its spiritual home to build a new state-of-the-art boutique stadium.

In a joint letter with Wynnum Manly Junior Rugby League set to go out to members today, the Wynnum Manly Seagulls announced they have established a subcommittee to explore infrastructure opportunities in the bayside suburb.

The main concept being considered is a new regional scale stadium with a capacity between 10,000 and 12,000 people, and high-performance facility to be built at Kitchener Park – the current home of the Wynnum Manly Juniors.

The stadium would be similar to the likes of Redcliffe Stadium, which cost $24 million, and Sunshine Coast Stadium.

If successful, the plans would mean the Seagulls would move away from their iconic home at Kougari Oval – where legends such as Lionel Morgan, Wally Lewis, Gene Miles and many more superstars of the game donned the green, red and white – to return to Kitchener Park, which was their original home until 1967.

The plans also come after the Wynnum Manly Seagulls and Wynnum Manly Juniors have experienced record growth in recent years with the seniors now boasting six elite statewide competition teams and the juniors hosting more than 750 registered members from under-6s to senior competitions.

In the letter, Wynnum Manly Seagulls chairman Tom Solah and Wynnum Manly Juniors president Adam Lipke said they were working together to explore progressive opportunities to strengthen the delivery of rugby league into the future for the bayside community.

“The growth in participant numbers has caused an immense stretch on existing infrastructure for both the respective clubs,” the letter said.

The letter also said the process for a new, state-of-the-art venue was only in the initial conceptual stage.

“To proceed, we believe a new state-of-the-art venue of this scale would require not only broader community consultation, but also multi-level government funding support,” the letter said.

“To ensure our members and fans are kept informed on the stadium concept progress, the Wynnum Manly Seagulls subcommittee would like to advise that they have now commenced preliminary conversations with the required three levels of government.

”Our members and fans will be kept informed of any material progress.

“Should it proceed beyond this initial feasibility assessment, broader member and community consultation would be the natural next step.”

Minor works were recently completed on Kougari Oval, the current home of the Seagulls, as part of a $10 million redevelopment of the Wynnum Manly Leagues Club.

If only. A true 2nd division with relagation/promotion would be unreal for league. Never will happen though.

QLD Cup grounds are nearly better than some Sydney NRL grounds - lol

I can't help but think there is a reason these clubs / local councils are making these investments... otherwise why waste the money?

Just like the Romans, everyone likes to build monuments. It shows how growing and important you are lol. A stadium at Wynnum though could be a good home for a womens Broncos or Titans club I suppose? Still doesn't need 12k capacity though.

Just like the Romans, everyone likes to build monuments. It shows how growing and important you are lol. A stadium at Wynnum though could be a good home for a womens Broncos or Titans club I suppose? Still doesn't need 12k capacity though.

i go to a lot of seagulls games. It can only be a good thing for the area. Seagulls are a pretty good crowd drawing team. And I am sure given the new location being right next to the train station compared to the current ground which can be a bit of pain for parking will see more coming to a game. I see them getting there 3k crowds with the occasional derby matches against the likes of Redcliffe cracking 5k. 10k might be a bit of overkill but you need to think big. Will be good for the juniors as there leagues club will get a big boost on game days.

Jeez, some of you guys are just so small minded and or negative Nelly's.

Who cares if they can fill the grounds to capacity or not? If they can get Gov assistance and fund it, then build it. Nice boutique grounds everywhere should be our goal. All seater ones that look like proper Stadiums is the preferred outcome.

Improving RL grounds all over the country can only be a good thing and help our sport.

Also if some of these grounds are used by other clubs/teams it will only assist in building RL support and help in fighting the incursion of AFL who are constantly moving into our areas and sticking their ugly posts everywhere.

We should be lobbying Govs everywhere for funding at all parks and grounds to improve them and turn them or keep them as RL grounds. Also when the NRL wants or needs to play games in other areas other then its normal grounds it would be awesome to have quality professional grounds to go to too wouldn't it? Not more sh*ty grass hill crappy ones that reek amateurism as is the case now. We should be trying to get 5k-12k all seaters everywhere. The one in the picture below is has a capacity of 7,638.

We are in a war people. Get with the program.

Something like this would be great for all ambitious second tier clubs if they can manage it.

I was just stupidly hoping that there was more at play, like them preparing for a professional second division.

Nothing stupid about hoping for more professionalism at the lower level mate. In fact if we could get more lower level stadiums like the one I showed in my previous post built, I believe attendances would increase across the board as more people, especially the immediate locals would see it as a great and cheap quality way to spend 2-3 hours with mates or family and support their local team on a more regular basis. I know if I lived within 5-10 mins of such a stadium, I wouldn't be able to resist becoming a regular attendee. The quality of it and the exceptional viewing experience would be to seductive and they would have me as a member and supporter of their team and I don't follow second tier sports at all. But this would be different and in my backyard. It would feel like my personal team so to speak.

But if they play in parks with grassy hills and look like any old amateurish footy team playing on the weekend, then sorry, I couldn't be bothered. I like quality, professionalism and a sense of grandioseness in my sports. Otherwise I just don't care enough to make it a regular thing, if at all.

We should try to make stadiums like the one I posted as the blueprint model for all lower team clubs to aspire to. It can only be a good thing for our sport and other rectangular sports, if they chose to use it too. That would be a truly winning strategy for them and our sport in general.

I like your mindset and message but I think arguably we would be better off with each of those 4 grandstands being spread out over 4 grounds (with 3 grass hills) than 1 ground.

Penrith should take over the club and rebrand it the Penrith Panthers. All those kids who play soccer in Western Sydney would then be under their radar. The ones who are good athletes can be encouraged to take up rugby league when they're teenagers.

Tbf that would destroy their fanbase.

As someone who followed the old NSL, Carlton and Parramatta's crowds were abysmal as no one wanted anything to do with them because of their parent clubs.

The Newcastle Rugby League in Newy is a funny study that is exactly the same as Sydney NRL but on a smaller scale.
The Newcastle teams play out of garbage grounds in the middle of nowhere (because they are close to their poker machines) meanwhile probably the best 2nd or 3rd tier stadium in Australia (Newcastle Number 2) in the best location in the town right near public transport has no Newcastle RL team playing in it so the area (Newcastle city) remains kind of a rugby area.
