The Game Future NRL Stadiums part II

It's not hard to see why.

$750m on a 23,000 seat stadium that'll be used for six AFL games a year. No roof and no retractable seating = no league, union or soccer. It's low capacity means its unlikely to attract the 'international' concerts they keep talking about. Newcastle and the Gold Coast can't attract those acts with bigger stadiums and larger populations - anyone who thinks Taylor Swift or The Weeknd is going to include Hobart on a tour needs to call me immediately as I have a bridge to sell them. Houses are f**ked. Hospitals are f**ked. Tassie's housing and health systems are significantly more stretched than the mainland states. Something like 35 rentals have been converted to Air BnBs in Hobart in the last month out of an already shallow pool, and major mental health and pre-birth care centres have closed with no real announcement on replacing them.

All of this, whilst Hobart already has a 20,000 seat stadium suitable for AFL. It's absolutely f**king bonkers that it's going ahead, the whole thing is farcical on the next level.

It makes no sense thats for sure, and unlike Perth and Adelaide it won't even be used for Cricket apparently??

The reason it's being built without a roof is twofold:

1 - Roofs are expensive and they were lying through their f**king teeth when they said they could build one at that price.

2 - Test cricket can't be played at roofed grounds. They'll play the BBL matches in Hobart there, so, well done - three more game days a year.

$750m for six games of Aussie rules and three domestic T20 matches per year.

The premier should be hauled in front of Tassie's version of ICAC for this. It's obscene.

As funny as that might be mate, that's not an NRL stadium issue. Leave that to other forums please.

I agree. Fumbleball stadiums don't belong in this thread. However in a roundabout way, it is related to GIO stadium. If Hobart can get funding for a new stadium, even if their footy team will only play 6 or 7 games.

Then why can't Canberra get funding for a new stadium? Especially with the nations capital having bigger population compared to Hobart and two full time football teams.

It doesn't make sense.

Why wont it be used for the occasional rectangular sport game? Even as an oval it will still be far superior than the other options there. I hope it makes it more viable for NRL or Storm play some games there. It might kickstart the disaster that has become RL in Tassie.

1. The ACT Govt dont want feds to build a stadium there, Tassie Govt did
2. A new stadium meant Tassie finally getting a top tier sports team to follow, Canberra already has 2 and a bit
3. Until ACT actually ask for funds then its a bit unfair to say the Feds are doing Canberra wrong by not funding something!
4. Tassie is a marginal seat area
5. This is the first time we know of that the NRL has actually shown any interest in lobbying on Raiders behalf, and tbh as far as lobbying goes it was a bit weak. Wheres the cost return analysis they could have provided re the benefits of a new stadium they've seen in other cities? The 'threat' of no major NRL events was pretty hollow given there arent any Canberra would be in the running for with a new stadium.

Has everyone forgotten Penrith?
It seems the 'promised' has been forgotten as well.
If the Feds put the same $240m forward for Penrith , along with the $300m from the State government they could build a new 25k stadium on the paceway site!

It might be- but that’s hardly part of a compelling business case.
Fact is Belrieve exists. If it didn’t there might be a reasonable case.

The events in Tassie are on point I reckon. It’s part of the broader issue facing new or renovating stadiums across Australia. Priorities have changed and it’s going to be a real grind updating stadiums Australia wide. The NRL has taken far too long to attack this issue and it may now be too late.,

In relation to the NSW Government, unless you have a signed contract a promise from a politician is about as useful as an umbrella in cyclone - its worthless. Just because the Coalition promised money for it when in Government does not bind a Government of a different political complexion to it.

In fact you could strongly argue that, as the locals of the electorate of Penrith voted the most vocal supporter of the new stadium (i.e. Stuart Ayres) out of office, they have expressed their opinions on the matter which the new Government have heeded.

It won’t be used for rectangle sports. Believe me. It’s an afl stadium. The peanut from Perth has no idea as usual.
Even if it was “used for the occasional game” like the MCG or Marvel are is irrelevant IMO.

on that note is there a stadium with retractable seating anywhere that actually works? IMO all they do is add expense and make watching rectangular pitch sports a bit less shit for the people in those tiers - theyre still lousy. Any “multi-use” stadium that caters for AFL/Cricket/Athletics inevitably ends up screwing over the sports that play on the smaller pitches. And that’s even when the retractable seating actually works like at Accor, and isn’t pretty much permanently set in oval mode like at Marvel because it either damages the grass or keeps breaking down.

you know, maybe… just maybe Penrith should just accept the $300M they’re getting and plan the best upgrade they can manage for that price. Even if it means a couple of years playing at Commbank, or a staged rebuild.

Very true. At least they aren't looking at having to move as far afield as what the Jacksonville Jaguars are looking at having to do for 2 years in the NFL due to its stadium being upgraded.

last time I looked Penrith wasn't the federal capital
thats why Canberra deserves & will eventually get fed assistance

At this moment in time, Hobart is getting a new stadium, while Canberra is not getting anything. So Canberra is in a position where they could learn something from Hobart. So what is the cost benefit analysis of Hobart's new stadium?
