One thing I never understand with these stadiums and the 'temporary' stands is why spend the money for such a little benefit. How can leaving the temporary stands there cost so much more in maintenance than ripping them all out after a 2 week event.
Hell qsac has had its 'temporary' stands left there since 1982.

It’s f**king beautiful, like stepping back in time. The ticket stands and entrances are just as they were in 1993. The rust on those stands whispers of free drongos tickets and John Ribot.

Not to mention the history of having many an Under 16 AIC javelin record set there. You can’t buy that kind of authenticity, even for a billion dollars.

The first retro Olympics. No need to spend a f**king cent.

Not really. The Gabba pitch is 170m long, an international standard athletics track needs 176.91m end to end, so you’d have to chop at least 4-5m out of the stands at each end to build it. It also wouldn’t provide ideal slight lines on the sides as a track is 92m wide and the Gabba is 150m wide, so your front row seats would be 30m back from the action at midway, and there really isn’t a way to improve on that.

The temporary stands at the northern and southern ends should be shipped to Cairns and Mackay.

It might be short lived as that team is only guaranteed entry if another excessively overpriced stadium gets built and that is looking as likely as the olympics being held at the gabba

Hopefully it gets canned and they're forced to add another team in Perth and one in Canberra. Perth Red will love that. They can call the team the Perth Reds and base it at Joondalup.

Who’s suggesting that?
Point is modifying the Gabba to temporarily host athletics would result in a substandard athletics venue and a significant construction bill to make and then reverse the modifications.
And at the end of it you still have no athletics venue as it’ll need to go back to AFL/Cricket mode.

I am not an AFL fan, but this the most politically motivated short sighted decision from this pathetic Labor Government in a long time. Wasting 1.5 billion on an athletic stadium that will virtually never be used again in completely ridiculous. How many people are planning on going to an athletics meeting in their life time. Money spent on the Gabba will again be a complete waste because it’s useful life runs out in about 2030. So more wasted money. You spend how many hundreds of millions on Suncorp for a few extra thousand seats. Who gives a f@%k. It sells out maybe for State of Origin and a handful of other games a year. I would rather prefer to get good infrastructure for my city, rather than have some pretend bragging rights over a sport I could give 2 f@#ks about. Miles is a stain on humanity. If anyone thinks this decision makes him some kind a hero, they either don’t live in Queensland or are completely f#@king delusional.
