Actually that stadium was built decades ago:

Those pictures just show what it would be like with a completed roof on it.

Yeah. It is currently under redevelopment. Much like the talk of Parra Stadium...funny that. :sarcasm:

In other news:

Three way battle for stadium funding pits Penrith Panthers against Parramatta Eels and Wests Tigers

THIS is Penrith's bold vision to emerge triumphant in Western Sydney's three-way battle for stadium supremacy.

The Panthers are vying with Wests Tigers and Parramatta to secure the third major arena in Sydney alongside Allianz and ANZ stadiums.

The three clubs banded together to fight the AFL invasion but will now be forced to cannibalise one another over a proposed 40,000 seat stadium.

The Panthers, Parramatta Eels and Wests Tigers all want the state government-funded arena - part of a stadia strategy - built in their backyard.

NSW Sports Minister Graham Annesley confirmed yesterday "the potential need for a new stadium in western Sydney".

Parramatta told of their need for a new venue on Tuesday with Penrith yesterday releasing designs for a new stadium on Mulgoa Road.

The Panthers design shows a magnificent state-of-the-art arena which would be home to Penrith, rivals codes, cricket, and rock concerts.

Penrith management has already held top-level discussions with prominent bureaucrats and stadium experts from Melbourne.

The Panthers claim the centre of growth corridors of Castle Hill and Campelltown is Penrith and the stadium would be just 1km from railway stations and the M4.

They also say Parramatta is too close to the ANZ Stadium at Olympic Park.

"There is also an entertainment precinct (Panthers) across the road and a carpark," Penrith Panthers group chief executive Warren Wilson said.

"We want to play a number of sports at the stadium because we need backsides on seats. There would even be a drop-in cricket pitch."

Annesley said government funds would maintain and upgrade Sydney's larger stadiums - not upgrade smaller suburban venues like Brookvale Oval, Campbelltown Stadium, Wollongong, Shark Park and Kogarah.

"The NSW government released its stadia strategy last year which said future government investment will focus on government owned or leased venues," Annesley said.

Where do you think the state government should fund a new stadium? Tell us below.

Why is Penrith the only club to have to give up all of their games for this new ground?

You state later that Penrith v Gold Coast in a 52,000 stadium will look shit in Western Sydney, having Penrith play these types of games at Centrebet Stadium will fix that.

I' also interested in the logica behind having the Bulldogs play only 4 games at this new ground which includes the WS derbies against Penrith, Parramatta and the Wests Tigers. Are the Bulldogs playing all their low drawing games? ... at a bigger venue in ANZ? .. That makes no sense.

Although I think your location sounds as close to spot on as I have seen so far. It still seems to be too far away from Campbelltown.

Seems to me the club causing the most problems are the Tigers.

They could do with a stadium to call there own, maybe share a smaller ground (30,000 flat pack ground) with the Dogs.

Penrith and Parra have there own grounds and history already so i'm sure you could tweek the grounds to make them work. Penriths ground hardly looks hemmed in by houses or anything, don't know about Parra.

Use the ANZ as a national stadium for Origin matches, finals, and international games of any code that is played in NSW.

Looks more like Blacktown on a map.

Unless the Tigers make the move out west, I think Penrith could get the nod or a new stadium as Parra is close to ANZ and too far away for Penrith and C'town

What have Penrith done to deserve a new stadium? Is it their 4,000 ticketed members? Maybe the high demand for more seats as they averaged 10,858 (2012) in a 22,000 seat stadium or maybe it has to do with the $40million in government funding they have received since 2006 on redevelopments to Centrebet Stadium.

Either way they make a formidable case. :sarcasm:

Here's the proposed upgrade for Penrith:

http://www.news.com.au/sport/nrl/th...and-wests-tigers/story-fndujljl-1226582250902

Warren Wilson makes good points about Parramatta Staduim. Unless Tigers play 100% at Campbelltown can't see that getting upgraded.

Any new stadium cannot be a multipurpose shape, it must be rectangular. This is not the anti afl side of me speaking. One of the reasons clubs should support stadium rationalisation is that if they play in world class facilities more fans will come and watch them (except the dinosaurs who will complain about leaving decrepitville). For that reason the stadium must be purpose built for RL/soccer.

Totally agree.

I said similar in the Penrith section. It's would be as useless as ANZ with that aspect to it. It needs to be an AAMI or Skilled type it still keeps it open for Soccer, RU and RL. Still could be concerts and that in there.

There's a cricker ground right next to it. Upgrade that to Manuka standard and you have the Headingley setup works well no reason it can't over here

Even that aside, its on the outermost edge of Sydney. No other team will be established that far west. Are the Tigers/Eels going to want to play at a ground 45/30 minutes away from their territory? Its all about leagues club profit from local games.

Is Campbeltown stadium really in that bad a state? I haven't been there for about 11 years.

No its not. And neither are parra or penrith. I go to those stadiums all the time and they are fine from a spectator point of view. Maybe the food/drink facilities and the player facilities need to be fixed. But there not that bad.

I think people overlook that if a new stadium was built, the Bulldogs would also look to play some games there, as you want to be in the best venue possible. ANZ is good, but a rectangle is much better.

So with the possibility of 4 teams playing out of there, the ground needs to be fairly easily accessible by public transport.

Parramatta is my pick. 40mins from the city, 40 from Penrith and Im sure similar coming from other parts of Sydney.

The problem is those places, especially Campbelltown and Penrith, have poor corporate facilities. And there is a lot of money in corporates that is not coming in for the teams in those stadiums,

'Campbeltown' stadium is right next to Leumeah station is it not? Tear it down and build your 35k stadium there?

The thing that worries me about the Penrith proposal is the talk about a cricket pitch. If it can hold cricket games, perhaps Sydney Thunder big bash games, then surely an AFL game could also be played at the stadium. Despite the obvious fall of having a multi-purpose stadium that can hold both rectangle and Oval sports has on the viewing of rectangle sports, I hope the AFL doesn't try and jump on this as a replacement for the Blacktown international sports field for GWS

In what alternative universe is Penrith 40 minutes away from Parramatta? haha It's 25-30 mins.

If it was 40 minutes away from Penrith it would completely rule it out for a potential stadium for the Panthers to play games at.

Ideally be looking at 30-35k which would suit most clubs for most games. Build it near the two best supported clubs I say. With 3-4 tennants it would be more than a viable project for the NSW govt to fund.

Been a while since I caught a train from Penrith to Parra, so can't say how long it takes, I thought it was that long.

Either way, it proves the point that Parra is more central for most people to get to, not to mention it already has a lot of entertainment options before and after the game.

Just on this whole rectangular v oval debate, something I've raised in TFC before is the conversion of ANZ to a permanently rectangular ground.

With the SCG currently being upgraded to a 50k-seater, it should become the city's primary cricket and fumbleball venue. The Swans and T20 cricket have stopped drawing crowds over 55k at ANZ so the SCG can easily accommodate them. In fact, the only sports that pack ANZ these days are 'rectangular' ones (GF, SOO, Bledisloe etc.). You would also play Thunder BBL games next door at Skoda or at the Blacktown AFL Oval since they don't have a lot of supporters.

You would bring in the stands at both the Northern and Southern ends at ANZ and then put a clear, unretractable roof over it and watch the crowds flood in.
