Future NRL Stadiums

I'm only talking about the Nth and Sth ends that they redeveloped after the Olympics. You can see how far away are fans at those ends from this image:

In fact if you demolished those ends and put up steeper stands, you would probably raise the capacity.

They should have left the end stands in place.

That photo really highlights what a shit stadium ANZ is. Low, flat stands that put the vast majority of spectators a mile away from the action.

Those low , flat lines that the stadium have we're for the Olympics. ( these sight lines were needed for athletics )

However with a bit of forward planning it could have been greatly improved for post Olympic sports. Likely we were too cheap though.

I understand that but surely they knew that after the stadium was used for 16 days in 2000 it would then be used throughout the year for many years after to show sports where this design was going to be problematic. Something more like a rectangular version of the MCG would be fantastic for the majority of sports that this stadium is used for.

To be honest im not sure.

I remember it being talked about by the organising committee or government or someone.

It may have had something to do with all the media. They sit in outside boxes for the olympics. Perhaps lower site lines create more space for them?

Yeah sure , i agree.

But the AFL paid the state government to make it oval remember.

The whole things been covered plenty of times but it really is scandalous considering the AFL had the scg

yeh seems most olympic stadiums have similiar low pitch stands. Reality ANZ will NEVER make a good club NRL ground. Once that premise is accepted we can move on and work out how to build a decent Suncorp style stadium for Western Sydney teams.

Far out there are some bitches out there (not referring to the two I'm replying to in this post)

I ask this as someone who knows very little of Western Sydney;

Would other clubs be upset at the prospect of Parramatta Leagues Club reaping the benefits of an upturn in trade should the Stadium there be upgraded?

yes.

Wow , that's the first I've seen that.

Was it proposed as a permanent change?

The stadium has done a lot of work to sell itself as an all year stadium. With that change it could kiss cricket goodbye.

yes

ANZ Stadium set for roof in $250m upgrade

EXCLUSIVE by Dean Ritchie
The Daily Telegraph
February 25, 2013 12:00AM

A $250 million upgrade is being planned for Sydney's largest sporting arena, ANZ Stadium, featuring moveable stands at the northern and southern ends and a rectractable roof.

With Sydney's sporting scene more vibrant than ever - nine NRL clubs, two A-League franchises, two Big Bash League teams, rugby's Waratahs and AFL's Swans and Giants - venue management are making sure they're not left behind.

The SCG is undergoing a multi-million dollar redevelopment that will further entrench it as one of the world's great sporting grounds.

The state government has announced it is investigating building or upgrading an existing western Sydney venue. Parramatta, Penrith and Campbelltown are in the running for the new 40,000 seat stadium.

But the blueprint for the Olympic venue's future is the boldest.

ANZ Stadium management is developing a plan to have the northern and southern seating bowls slide in and out for a rectangular playing field that would brings fans to within 5m of the action from NRL, rugby union and football matches.

Capacity would be slightly reduced in the rectangular format, but still well over 75,000.

The masterplan includes:

* A rectractable see-through roof, the foundations of which are already in place;

* Steeper seating at the northern and southern ends that would be part of the movable stands. This, officials say, would enhance atmosphere and bring supporter groups closer to the action;

* Glass-fronted indoor bars and cafes on level two; and

* Working with the Sydney Olympic Park Authority to create new precinct destinations on game-days, so fans can arrive earlier and stay later.

While there is no firm commitment to fund the project at this stage, it is understood the redevelopment could be jointly funded by government and private enterprise in partnership.

ANZ Stadium managing director Daryl Kerry said: "There has been a lot of discussion about stadiums in NSW in the wake of the government's strategy policy, and we are fortunate to have a government prepared to talk about infrastructure.

"Thirteen years on from the Olympics, ANZ Stadium has a sporting calendar to rival any stadium in the world, so we are pursuing a redevelopment that will both drive the best economic outcomes for NSW and give fans the best possible multi-sports stadium.

"Sydney is the envy of the sporting world this year with a host of world-class events.

"July alone will feature a British & Irish Lions Test (July 6), a key Waratahs v Queensland Reds Super rugby clash (July 13), a potentially series-deciding Origin game (July 17), a visit by arguably the world's most famous sporting club in Manchester United (July 20) and then two key NRL clashes - Rabbitohs v Dragons (July 22), and Bulldogs v Eels (July 26) to round out the month."

NSW State of Origin coach Laurie Daley backed the plan.

"It sounds absolutely fantastic," Daley said. "A roof would ensure dry conditions and that would make for faster football.

"Fans will also love being closer to the game and players."

I'd imagine it would take over a year for the stadium to be upgraded. Where would Origin and the Grand Final be played?

Don't mean to blow my own trumpet but 4 days after I suggest it on this thread, ANZ announces plans to do it.

Three way battle for stadium funding pits Penrith Panthers against Parramatta Eels and Wests Tigers
Dean Ritchie
The Daily Telegraph
February 21, 2013 12:00AM

THIS is Penrith's bold vision to emerge triumphant in Western Sydney's three-way battle for stadium supremacy.

The Panthers are vying with Wests Tigers and Parramatta to secure the third major arena in Sydney alongside Allianz and ANZ stadiums.

The three clubs banded together to fight the AFL invasion but will now be forced to cannibalise one another over a proposed 40,000 seat stadium.

The Panthers, Parramatta Eels and Wests Tigers all want the state government-funded arena - part of a stadia strategy - built in their backyard.

NSW Sports Minister Graham Annesley confirmed yesterday "the potential need for a new stadium in western Sydney".

Parramatta told of their need for a new venue on Tuesday with Penrith yesterday releasing designs for a new stadium on Mulgoa Road.

The Panthers design shows a magnificent state-of-the-art arena which would be home to Penrith, rivals codes, cricket, and rock concerts.

Penrith management has already held top-level discussions with prominent bureaucrats and stadium experts from Melbourne.

The Panthers claim the centre of growth corridors of Castle Hill and Campelltown is Penrith and the stadium would be just 1km from railway stations and the M4.

They also say Parramatta is too close to the ANZ Stadium at Olympic Park.

"There is also an entertainment precinct (Panthers) across the road and a carpark," Penrith Panthers group chief executive Warren Wilson said.

"We want to play a number of sports at the stadium because we need backsides on seats. There would even be a drop-in cricket pitch."

Annesley said government funds would maintain and upgrade Sydney's larger stadiums - not upgrade smaller suburban venues like Brookvale Oval, Campbelltown Stadium, Wollongong, Shark Park and Kogarah.

"The NSW government released its stadia strategy last year which said future government investment will focus on government owned or leased venues," Annesley said.

Is Penrith a serious chance? It'd be basically just for them since it's so far from Parra and Wests.

250m for better seats behind the goal posts? Surely that money could be better spent... you could build a new stadium for that much.
