Future NRL Stadiums

Talking of too many unused AFL stadiums in Sydney don't forget to add Kogarah oval to that list.

A fully refurbished 22,000 stadium close to public transport that needs to be more utilised other than the odd game of cricket or NRL.

I was going to point out Jubilee Oval's lack of parking, but I guess an AFL game would attract enough spectators for that to be a problem.

Have seen comments on the Bigfooty boards that they want any new western Sydney stadium to cater for Aussie rules. That is laughable imo they have 4 grounds In Sydney metro suitable for an AFL premiership match all of which have received significant gov't funding in recent times. That being said I don't think it would happen as the wanderers and NRL clubs would literally freak out and withdraw support

of course they do.

their Western Sydney strategy is flawed. They use this moronic abbreviation of a term that absolutely no one up here uses. The Wanderers couldn't believe their luck that the actual term 'Western Sydney' was theirs for the exclusive use and exploitation in the Western Sydney sports market.

Furthermore, they play in a generic location at Olympic Park. It's neither here nor there. It's the geographic heart of the Sydney metro, not the Western Sydney region. Richard Hinds even questioned it in the Fairfax rags yesterday. Olympic Park is practically Inner West. If it was already hard for the Giants to get traction in Western Sydney, playing matches here on the edge of the region isn't going to get true Western Sydney folk there. If anything, they're probably cannobilising existing Swans support in nearby areas of the Inner West & inner north west.

They got 24k to a derby game the other day. Proof that new supporters aren't being attracted to the club. It's just a redistribution of the same supporters that normally go AFL in Sydney.

If there's money being thrown around for a facility in the heart of Western Sydney, they'll get their grubby fingerprints on any development that goes up..........despite the funds Govt have invested at Olympic park for them. The Concord Giants and the AFL have already made their bed. f**k off!

That Bigfooty thread is hilarious.

They have the SCG, Skoda and ANZ, not to mention that waste of space at Blacktown that are suitable for AFL and they're suggesting that the new ground should be AFL capable?

My personal favourite is where someone suggests that cricket is AFL's 'trojan horse in Sydney' and that by getting the Sydney Thunder (who had one crowd last season in excess of 7,000 - a derby against the Sixers during the Christmas/New Year holiday period) to commit to it it could be justified.

Its F%%$n ridiculous,isnt it!

In 1998(while under construction),the AFL paid the Stadium Australia Group a lousy $2million LOAN,to ensure that post-Olympics works allows for the possibility of retractable seating.
If the AFL didnt make this play at this point, then construction wouldve been told far gone to allow any form of retractable seating at Stadium Australia.

If there was no interference from the AFL,the ground dimensions of ANZ Stadium wouldve been in permanant rectangle mode of 140m x 84m (Suncorp 136 x 77)

In 2008,the AFL somehow con Blacktown council into $15M to pay for an AFL approved venue for their new GWS franchise.

In 2010,the AFL convince the Sydney Showground Authority to upgrade their Homebush Showground costing over $190M of NSW Taxpayers money.

In 2012,the AFL abandon Blacktown(Not even 12 months after the ground opened) in favour of a new training facility in Sydney Olympic Park.

and who knows how much the current redevelopment of the SCG is costing which is being done mainly to suit its major tenant, the Sydney Swans AFL Football Club.

Now...we have talk that GWS want involvement in a new Western Stadium in Sydney, which is being proposed to serve the A-League,Rugby Union and Rugby League codes of the Western Suburbs.

There are 3 AFL (4 if you count Blacktown) Venues in Sydney.Even Melbourne only have 2.

I live in Melbourne and I know how these ALF scum operate.

-Upgrade the SFS,to 50,000 and include a new retractable Roof
-Go back to the original post Olympics plan for Homebush to the original rectangular configuration and retractable roof.
-Upgrade Parramatta Stadium to seat 30,000
-Build a rectangular Stadium seating 40,000 in Sydney West.It should be at Blacktown Olympic Park with a new Railway station at the front door.
-And lastly, kick the ALF scum out of the heartland

Looking at the rail lines at Liverpool, Blacktown, Parra and Penrith.

Penrith serviced only by western line. To far away from the rest of the clubs support bases
Blacktown and Parra serviced by Western and Cumberland lines.
Liverpool serviced by Inner west, cumberland, South and Bankstown lines

Taking a new stadium at liverpool
-Ideal for Bulldogs, Wests, Wanderers.
-Worth considering a portion or all games at for Parra.
-Penrith out

With the liverpool option; Campbelltown could be discontinued as a playing venue, perhaps turned into an elite training centre for Wests. Do something with Parra stadium if Eels and Wanderers want to retain lower drawing fixtures there.

Taking an upgraded Parra
-Ideal for Parra and Wanderers.
-Worth considering for Penrith, Wests, Bulldogs and Waratahs for big games.

Taking a new stadium at Blacktown olympic park
-New station at ground required
-Ideal for Parra, Penrith
-Bulldogs and Wests would have to seriously consider moving all or a majority of games to it
-Ideal for Wanderers
-Most likely to be ambushed by afl to be retrofitted for the canberra giants??
-Close to major junctions of M4/M7

Parra and penrtih i feel are out as options due to the tribal nature of sydney sport and the perceived lack of neutrality.

In my mind i would like to see a new stadium built at Blacktown as that is where i thnk most clubs would get the use from it. Liverpool is a very close second.

Bottom line is no option suits every team in the region

I have a question for Sydneysiders

Would a stadium in the actual city ever be possible, e.g in Barangaroo where Packer is planning to build a new Crown complex?

If so, is the site or any other site suitable to be accessed fairly easily from all parts by public transport?

I'd love for the game to have a greater presence in the actual CBD and surrounding areas if it were possible

It would be great in a perfect world.

But the major stumbling block is the SFS. It is after all only 5 mins from the city.

It was opened in 1988 , so it has at least another 25-30 years of life.

But the other major stumbling block is land. Land value in the Sydney CBD is just crazy. The size of a stadium could fit several high rise buildings.

The closest I could see something being built to the city would be around central station. Which really should have been done when the SFS was built.

The SFS and SCG are actually closer to central station than Barangaroo is.

The only problem with that is that there is absolutely no land available for that.

That is Prince Alfred park, it has just undergone a $9 million facelift, and has for a long time been highly regarded within the community. A stadium would never be built there. Plus it already has sporting facilities (tennis courts and swimming pool).

.

If it was government built , lack of land doesn't mean much.

They'll buy up what they need.

Around central would be more viable as there isn't as much high rise. Therefore it would be more affordable.

It's a pipe dream though.

Where the entertainment centre is would be perfect. Close enough to trains/trams and buses, close to Darling Harbour which would really make that area go off even more. Would be hard to pass up a night at the footy if it was placed there.

I have been banging on about this only forever.

The best two place for this that I can see are Belmore Park in front of Central Station or Albert Park at the back of Central Station.

Either of these options would be awesome and guarantee massive crowds virtually every week.

Can you imagine if this were ever to happen? The days of the white elephant and excuses why people aren't turning up to the footy would well and truly be over.

But the ARLC and government aren't very good at doing things that actually work.

Instead they are going to spend a billion dollars upgrading the SFS and its surroundings, but still end up leaving us with a white elephant.

For people who are coming from suburbia a tram line is not the solution, not to mention that you aren't getting the city workers, dwellers or night outers. The SFS is still just far enough to be an inconvenience, especially for the lesser games.

But hey, when was the last time anyone built anything in this whole country of ours that had vision?

Opera House I do believe was the last time.

Well I suppose we aren't alone here either, Auckland could of had this left over as a legacy after their Rugby world cup, instead they got another white elephant as such. Ho fu*king hum.

In an ideal world Stadium Australia would've been right next door to Lidcombe train station and they would've dug up the bodies at Rockwood Cemetery.

I still say do it and then also build a new city stadium near Central.

That will be great for older people , disabled or families with young children.

But if its anything like our light rail line that runs from central to lilyfield , it will be much easier and quicker for most people just to walk up to the stadium.

Light rail just isn't a real option for high capacity needs like a stadium.
