BLACKTOWN International Sportspark at Rooty Hill could grow as the jewel in Blacktowns sporting crown with proposals, including two new 20,000-seat stadiums, a train station and hotel, put forward.
The plans are outlined in councils draft masterplan, which is on public exhibition until Friday. Blacktown Mayor Len Robinson said the plans were part of councils vision to turn the sportspark into a premier sporting hub.
"It is hoped with additional facilities, the park will operate self-sufficiently," Cr Robinson said. He said the sportspark's benefits included hosting sporting events and entertainment, and local sports people using its facilities." ... the new masterplan aims at creating a one-stop shop for those visiting the park," he said.
Broken into stages, the plan proposes a range of new facilities, to be built from one to 10 years or longer. Stage one (one- to three-year plans) is estimated to cost about $20 million and includes a 200-room 10- to 20-storey hotel, and traffic and landscape upgrades. Longer-term proposals include an entertainment precinct, a restaurant and conference/function centre. Stage-four proposals (10 years-plus plans) include an event train station and two 20,000-seat stadiums.
A council spokeswoman said any stadium development would be an important local, regional and national project. Parking, expansion of existing facilities, recreational areas and improved pedestrian access to Rooty Hill and Doonside are also outlined in the plan. Parking and improved pedestrian access are also included in the plan. Following public exhibition, a report will go to council in July, seeking adoption of the plan. The spokeswoman confirmed stage-one planning would start almost immediately after adoption of the plan.
