and it's not even a good "ikea stadium"

theres a few "ikea stadiums" been built around the UK recently and what they all have in common is the 4 stands tend to be the same meaning expanding the stadium is just a case of filling in the corners creating a nice, atmospheric,bowl.....like st helens new place for example

St Helens isn't an Ikea stadium. I'd also probably prefer Salford's to somewhere like Widnes or Leigh, at least it has some individuality.

Not sure what your definition of an Ikea stadium is but that certainly doesn't look like one to me. Doncaster is pretty much just LSV with the corners filled in.

because norths fans won't support manly maybe..

the example i've used in the past is cronulla

move the NRL team to adelaide/perth but keep the NYC & NSW cup teams @ toyota park as cronulla..

the new adelaide/perth sharks would attract new fans in adelaide or perth as well as,you'd hope, being able to count on the 8-10k cronulla diehards supporting the club when the team plays in sydney every few weeks

or is that fanciful thinking??

do or did south melbourne AFL fans support sydney swans?? i know when sydney won the grand final a few years ago (2005?) they paid tribute to "bloods" fans....did that tempt former south melbourne fans into supporting sydney when playing in melbourne?

The Sharks could be the new 2nd Brissy / SEQld team allowing the return of both the WA Reds & the CC Bears. Perhaps a healing moment for the NRL.

South Melbourne fans (at least a fair percent) do support the Swans I'm told. The singlet has a SMFC reference on the back yoke. Shit, I'd probably support them if they wore the Red Vee and were called The Bloods! (btw from Bloodstained Angels).

How wrong can you be TEZZA? SL is far bigger in the UK than it is in Australia.

hahaha love it! :D

ok i'll give it time

A couple of questions.
Is Barton "out of the way"?
Is that a railway building at the top of the photo just past the car park?

AND what is that cool clam shell stadium in the 2nd photo! tres cool.

The stadium is right next to the M60, which is the Manchester ring road, you can see it in the background of the picture Spud posted. It's about 5 miles from their current home. One of the major problems for Salford though has been that their current ground is in a pretty run down area, with numerous complaints of fans having their car windows smashed, bricks thrown at buses and that kind of thing, so from that point of view it's probably a good thing they are moving a little way out of the area.

Don't know what the building in the background is supposed to be - I doubt they would build a station of that size so chances are it's probably just warehouses or something. That picture does mention rail links of some sort though so we'll have to see.

The other picture is the stadium Salford claimed they were going to build back in 2004. The people running the club were a little delusional and thought they had secured planning permission to build some sort of super-casino that would make them all rich. They boasted that they were going to sign Craig Gower and Minichiello and become the world's biggest RL club within 5 years. In reality they ended up signing a bloke called David Gower, the company that was supposed to be building the stadium and casino went bust and Salford got relegated in 2006. With that in mind I think they are just happy with what they've got.

The buildings in the background are retail space. There is also a proposal to link up the Trafford Centre (largest shopping mall in UK) and CoS Stadium to the Metrolink tram network.

Saints stadium isn't an Ikea ground, there's has some design quality but typical Salford City Council have already watered down this new "
box" template once already! We were meant to have floodlights on an angle and the roof of that big stand was different in the first render!

So how far along are all the stadiums and will they be ready for kick off of next season?
Saints should be done by December, I think they are planning to open it with a friendly match against Wigan on Boxing Day. Salford should be done around December too, so both in time for the start of next season. Catalans new stand is virtually finished and is officially opened when they play Leeds in July. Not heard anything recently about Leeds' new South Stand, but as far as I know that's on course to be done in the off-season. Castleford and Wakefield are still both pie-in-the-sky at the moment.

That sounds familiar... major redevelopment being a huge economic boom leading to being the biggest club in the game. Where have I heard that before? Somewhere in the south of Sydney maybe...

and st helens is just like doncaster but with some terracing...

and the general definition of a ikea/flatpack stadium,on the skyscrapercity forums anyway, would be a stadium with 4 identical (sizewise) stands which is easily extandable by filling in the corners...

starting off with new stadia like shrewsbury & chesterfield

progress that on to doncaster & st helens

Bit harsh to say pie in the sky for Cas & Wakey!

Particularly for Wakefield who have confirmed in numerous ways that they have full funding secured to build their stadium as soon as planning permission is granted.

Its hardly the fault of the club that the Government wanted to pull the planning application in for a public inquiry. Without that happening Wakefield would have steel in the ground by now and may well be as advanced as Sts & Salford.

I honestly have absolutely no interest in this sort of thing. Both Salford and Wakefield have been talking about different levels of planning permission for years. The difference is that Salford now have physical evidence and have set a date to move in, whereas Wakefield have nothing. Wakefield have been trotting out BS for years about how they are going to improve their stadium, until the diggers move in and they set a date for leaving Belle Vue it's pie in the sky as far as I'm concerned.
